I was browsing through and found the chart from 2 years ago. Well, a little more than 2 years ago. It was the chart published on 3/23/07.

As you can see.. the #1 song 2 years ago only had 9171 spins. The #1 song now has 10125 spins. Thats almost 1000 spins more.

The song at #5 had 8082. Now it has 8513.

The song at #10 had 4457. Now 4457 spins would put you at #17.

The song at #20 had 2835. 2835 would put you at #26 now.

The song at #30 had 1870. Which isn't too far off the 1978 it has now.

Total number of spins in the Top 10 then was 73,297. Total number of spins in the Top 10 now is 79,883.

Total in the Top 20 now = 123,774
Total in the Top 20 then = 109,498

Its crazy how slowly it has changed. Especially to see songs peak with 5000 spins and not even make the Top 10. I wish I had some better charts, cause the one from 2 years ago had a lot of crazy spin gaps. Seeing a song at #5 with over 8000 spins then was crazy. I did find a song from 1 month later that was at #5 with a little over 6000 spins. Meaning our current #8 would be at #5 with the amount of spins it has.

If anyone else has some old charts to compare. I would like to see. What really had me thinking on this was looking at our #19 song with 3608 spins and gaining. We could seriously see a Top 20 spin threshold of 4000 spins soon. Which is crazy.

I must say that top ten 2 years ago completely owns the top ten right now. Although I actually like all of the songs in the top 10 right now, but that '07 one has like 5 or 6 classics in there, and yeah the diversity was much better.

I agree, the whole Top 10 was good, right now I would say only about 4 are actually in the same quality as the Top 10 2 years ago.

Yeah not sure if that's a result of more stations on the panel, or a trend where CHRs are rotating their powers more now than they were two years ago...IMO it's def. not a measure of the "strength" of the songs, since so many of those hits from two years ago turned out to be huge (and still in recurrent)

Well, I do think some of it is a result of more stations to the panel. Stations seem to be spinning their Top 20 a lot more now than before. Cause not only have the Top 10 numbers increased, but so have the 11-20. Everything below #25 is about equal to what it was 2 years ago. However, we do have more stations now. So in a way, everything below #25 is a little lower than normal.

^Actually think some of it might have to do with the fact that there don't seem to be as many "popular" recurrent hits right now than there were say 2 years ago (i. e. stations are more current-focused just cause the big recurrent hits from the earlier 2000s by Lifehouse, Maroon 5, Calling, 3 Doors Down, Avril, Melissa Branch, Creed, Nickelback, Santana, Eminem, 50 Cent, etc. seem to be losing their "edge" with CHR...most are now considered AC or close to that)

In other words, not sure that current CHRs have as many "high-callout" recurrent hits to pick from nowadays (basically just the Timbo/Justin Timberlake stuff, Colbie, Love Song, Daughtry, and maybe Outkast and Low...ATL stations still play Chasing Cars but not sure if the less adult-focused CHRs do)

Well, I remember those days, and I think there was a scarcity of spins in that period, tho. There were some crazy low spins at #1 with Cupid's Chokehold, What Comes Around... and U+Ur Hand, but then it started to stabilize again.

There are still some differences (like #5), but for example Carrie Underwood had over 5.5K spins and was still #11, and #20 even had more spins that the current #20

The Top 5 alone on both charts is enough to show that stations are giving the upbeat songs way more focus in 09 than in 07. There is not one power-pop track in the Top 5 from this time in 07 (all are actually sappy and slow), while pretty much all five songs in the Top 5 at the moment are pure power-pop.

With all this in mind, I don't think a song like It's Not Over would even come close to #1 if released today. Top 5 at best. Its way too slow and not upbeat enough for power rotation across the board. However, I do think something like You Found Me would have definitely hit at least Top 3 if released in 07.

Sorry really gotta disagree (sorry )...IMO it's just that there aren't a lot of strong pop/rock ballads out right now - def. don't think You Found Me is anywhere near as strong as previous Fray singles or big Daughtry tracks - "power/pop" controlling Top 5 IMO is more a result of the material that's out there right now

Yeah agreed...that chart was from the year (1999) before all the Clear Channel pop-rhythmic CHRs expoded and started makin the chart slant rhythmic

I remember that back before the big panel split in 2001, the #20 song always had around 4,000 spins and the #1 song usually had just over 10,000... and there were like 180 stations on the panel then. The panel size only in the 130s now, yet we have nearly the same thresholds.

As I've said before, there should be some rule preventing stations from playing any song more than 60 times a week (which is still more than once every three hours). There are millions of songs in the world; why do we need to hear the same ones so much?

The reason I have heard is that the average radio listener only listens for about an hour. So radio plays the in demand songs more because people more than likely didn't hear them the hour before. lol Yeah.. makes sense right??

If everything below #25 is about equal to what it was before it indicates that the primary reason songs are getting more spins in the top 20 isn't because there are more stations in the panel (that's a bit of it), but because the powers and sub-powers are being spun far more relative to the rest of each station's playlist. Two years ago stations were distributing the spins better--meaning the spin gaps between the powers and sub-powers and the medium rotation songs weren't as large 2 years ago.

For whatever reason, too many stations believe they need to run a song into the ground by playing it 12-15 times a day, while the rest of their playlist gets 5-6 spins max. Ultimately makes for a poor playlist, and I'm not sure how stations could be doing better under this system.

Wow...songs with 5000 spins in the top 5 and songs with 4400 spins in the top 10....crazy :o

Probably why it seems like we had more hits back then--more songs had the chance to become hits because the spins were spread around more. And there wasn't as much difference between how much you were hearing the #5 song and the #10 song, so both seemed like hits to the average listener.

Now there's these huge spin gaps and only a select few are so overplayed that people consider them hits. Anything played less than that isn't as noticed, regardless of whether it was spun more than songs in the top 10 ten years ago.

I don't think that's the case on most CHRs. 15 times a day is 105 spins a week; 19 times a day is 133 times a week. There are a few CHRs that overplay to that degree, but most CHRs cut off in the 85-105 range.

It seems back in 1998, 8-10 spins a day was considered power.

Also really think it had a lot to do with the fact that there were way more recurrents to play back then (that people still considered "hits")...really think some of the more teen-oriented stations are playin Right Round 120x a week cause they don't have as many options of other songs that sound like "hits" to their listeners

Back in '98, you had all those "hits" to choose from so IMO you didn't have to spin each one an insane amount of times each week (plus tons of recurrents from '94, '95, '96, '97 etc.)
