The album prior to this one was released at the same time in a different year and scored 700K+. With 'No One' being a massive hit. Had Element Of Freedom been released in September, with how things went with its lead single, it would have opened with not even 300k. I agree with you, I don't get why would you think otherwise considering what I posted. I had already stated that Doesn't Mean Anything wasn't successful and that's what screwed total sales for the album. And her first week, of course. Not only for being her first album not to go multi-platinum, but for the album's great quality that didn't get a chance to get to as many buyers as it could have.

Not to mention her label completely gave up promoting it after Un-thinkable. WHY they wouldn't even TRY to follow up one of the biggest hits of her career at all still baffles me.

^ Exactly. More sales could have come if they had a follow up. Heard "Speechless" on the radio today (99 Jamz, Miami) and a few days ago on a commercial for the station.

Because nothing on the album would have been a hit and it would have been a waste of time and effort (they already spent enough money on a album that probably didnt get them a ROI) She was lucky to sell what she did considering how the other singles performed and all her bad publicity from being a knocked up mistress. It was best to end on a high note.

Well, she had her most successful era in the UK with this album. She scored 3 tops 10 hits (she had only 2 top 10s before the album was released - not including features). One of which is very close to becoming platinum and looks like it will reach that point sometime this year. The album has sold almost 1 million in the Uk too and will most likely reach 1mil at some point. This is almost the same amount as her debut sold here but in a much worse sales climate. Now she has a more solid fanbase and hopefully her next album will reflect that.

Her personal life did NOT affect her sales, period. That is a gossip/blog thing.

Most people don't really seem to know or care about the Mashonda thing.

Most people don't really seem to know or care about the Mashonda thing. Only the queens on PMB, Twitter, YouTube, random blogs, and MediaFAKEout make it so important.

I think her album sales are more likely due to the fact that she lacked a huge crossover hit than her personal life. She's always had at least one huge hit on all of her albums except this one. Unthinkable was a huge R&B hit but couldn't crack the top 20 on the Hot 100. If she can get a huge crossover hit next album, her sales could improve.

No Pop support (Or Rhythmic in the case of "Unthinkable") hurt album sales, digital sales, and airplay for her singles. The singles and album did strong overseas in the end.

Forgot about the re-release! The album is all about love, wonder what else she would have sung about.

I really like this song! and Jessie J sounds great and I'm kind of glad she kept it for herself because she is a much better vocalist than Alicia.

That's odd, why would Alicia have a song written for her, when she's a singer-songwriter herself? Does she have a writing credit on the song?

ehhh who knows and just because your a singer-songwriter doesn't mean that you'll write all your songs. look at Keri Hilson for example there are a few songs on her latest album that feature no creative input from her at all (aside from vocals of course).

That's true. Alicia has always written all her songs though, that's her thing. She's had a writing credit on every song on all her albums (except the Prince cover), so taking someone else's song didn't strike me as something Alicia would do...

You never know what the song would have been like if Alicia recorded it. She may have rewritten an entire verse if she decided to record it for all we know. There's not even proof that Alicia ever actually even recorded the song.

Per Rap-Up: "Exclusive: New Alicia Keys Album Coming This Year" www.rap-up.com/2011/02/17/exclusive-new-alicia-keys-album-coming-this-year/Alicia Keys’ current priority may be motherhood, but she’s ready to get back to music. The R&B songbird has returned to the studio to work on her fifth studio album for release this year, Keys’ longtime producer Kerry “Krucial” Brothers exclusively revealed to Rap-Up TV. “We do got a release coming this year, but I can’t speak on it yet,” said Krucial at last weekend’s ASCAP 2nd Annual Grammy Brunch at the Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood. “Last week we was in the studio working on stuff,” he continued, sharing that the collaborators will once again be working hand in hand on the follow-up to 2009’s The Element of Freedom. “Don’t fix it if it’s not broke.” While their chemistry in the studio hasn’t changed, one thing has following the birth of Alicia’s son Egypt. “The writing is the same. The only thing changed is the schedule. We leave earlier now. No more to-the-crack-of-dawn stuff—at least not for now.”

I'm glad her release schedule seems to be every 2 years now instead of the 4 years she took between Diary and As I Am. By the way she recorded a song with Swizz for his new album.
