Out of curiosity, was there only one version of the AT40 back then? Because judging from the chart, there seems to be a lot more variety here that encompasses the best from both Hot AC and CHR.
Can anyone confirm when AT40 started having both a chart for CHR and Hot AC?

Music was so much better back then. Looking at that list, only 2 songs I can't stand (#15 and #24) Most of it is very good.

So much Pure R&B songs. The days when you could appeal to Pop without actually being "Pop".

The late 90s were the best time for CHR, IMO.
So much diversity...every genre is represented there.

I was expecting Barenaked Ladies "It's All Been Done" to be on there... I guess the chart's a little too early or late... whichever.

Can anyone confirm when AT40 started having both a chart for CHR and Hot AC? AT40 didn't have a Hot AC version until the Ryan Seacrest era (Ryan took over in 2004, and, I think, the Hot AC show started in 2005, but I'm not completely sure). Back in '99, Casey's franchise consisted of AT40 and the two AT20s (AC and Hot AC).

Yeah think that chart was a couple months before Clear Channel started launching all those near-rhythmic CHRs which completely transformed the CHR chart by the early 2000s...also pretty sure stations that report to the Hot AC panel today (like WKRQ and WZPL) were still allowed to report to CHR at that point

Weird thing is IMO there are a lot of CHRs today that have similar playlists to that '99 AT40 chart...it's just that so many near-rhythmic CHRs have been added to the panel since then that non-rhythmic songs get "blocked" about 10-15 slots lower than they would've peaked back then

Love it. Not a single rap song! I remember there was a period in early 2000 for a few weeks when there was no rap in the Top 40 until "The Real Slim Shady" came along.

It's mindblowing to know that out of that list, Britney is the ONLY artist to be actually ON the charts today and owning them still

Yeah same with Matchbox 20 and 'N Sync if u count their lead singers...btw really glad there are no more tracks on CHR similar to Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen by Baz Luhrmann that was completely ridiculous IMO

A friend of mine at the time told me that after having listened to that song, it felt more to him like a typical lecture we had in high school. Honestly, I never thought a song of that nature would go on to have a place on the charts!

Omg, I can't believe that song went top 20 lol. It's not even a song, it's a lecture...I'd mistake it for a commercial if I heard it on the radio

Unless he goes all autotuned and tries to sing. Then not so much.

How could you forget about Justin Timberlake, who was white-hot back then as a member of you-know-who?

That chart proves that CHR was good once upon a time. WTF happened? About 20-25 near-rhythmic CHRs were started up by Clear Channel in mid-'99 through early 2000s...Mediabase started allowin stations to report to CHR/Pop even if they were 90% rhythmic, and CHRs that didn't play enough rap were moved to Hot AC

Love it. Not a single rap song! Can I Get A... is a rap song IMO. And some would even argue Miami is a rap song (though certainly not what I would consider rap nowadays I suppose).
