This is one of my favorite of Barbra's "pop" hits. She had several pop makeovers in her career (most notably her late 70s disco makeover and her early 80s Bee Gees makeover), but her Carole King-esque pop material in the early to mid 70s singer-songwriter material ("Space Captain," "Stoney End," "Time and Love" [which was also originally written and performed by Laura Nyro]) is my favorite. I absolutely adore Laura Nyro's songwriting. Barbra sounds a little ridiculous singing these lyrics (which I believe she even makes note of in that Q&A video which I haven't seen in awhile), but her take is excellent nonetheless. I still prefer Laura's original though.
An interesting tidbit about this song is that when Laura Nyro originally released this as a single, Verve made her change the line about being "raised on the good book Jesus" because they thought it would cause controversy. She re-wrote the line for the single release and instead of just re-recording that line, she did an entirely alternate vocal take for the single release.

I had never seen Sara Bareilles' version from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony last year until now. Whoa! She nailed it.
