Read the entire post again; particularly the bit down the bottom. I got it, and Cammy is completely correct. ;)

There really isn't going to be such a thing this year. I think Boom Boom Pow was at it's height in the spring, so it can't really be called the summer anthem, and I Gotta Feeling will be peaking more around fall than summer. That just kind of leaves Don't Trust Me or LoveGame, neither of which I think could definitively be called the '09 summer anthem.

IGF will be peaking in August, which is still summer. It's almost top 10 already so it definitely will be peaking before the summer ends.

^It's going to be at the end of summer when it peaks though, it's not going to have a big enough impact during the summer to be the summer anthem. It will be too split up between summer and fall. And even though fall doesn't officially start until Sep 21, the summer season in the entertainment world is over by the end August, if not earlier.

I've always seen it that summer starts with Memorial Day and ends with Labor Day.
There have been a lot of "summer anthems" that peaked in August so I don't see why this year's cant. Besides, like it's been said, it doesn't matter when it peaks, it's when it makes an impact, and I feel like IGF has already started to make one.

I think August is ideal and it may not be at its absolute height until the end of August or a little earlier but I think its impact is already immense. I also think that things are different this summer because of economy, technology, etc. I think radio is losing its influence as far as "anthems" are concerned. Anthems are played by a demographic and i think that "anthem" status comes from typically parties and hanging out at night. With that said, I think people are using iPods and playing these anthems. I think we have to look to sales. People here these songs during the day and then download them and play them. ive given it a lot of thought and thats just part of what I think. Its hard to explain without writing an essay. I just dont think the peak date is as important as recognizing its impact.

How can I Gotta Feeling not be classified as a summer song? It is already the #1 song in the country!! I think its received enough of an impact around the country with that showing.
Also, why do we keep classifying this anthem by its CHR chart run? The CHR chart is not the only factor that determines the anthem. Regular music fans are not studying peaks and falls. Its all about the song that made the summer, the one that fuels that reminiscing feeling. Nobody knows what the hell a CHR chart is. A summer anthem to the millions of Pop music fans around the country won't be the same as our opinions because we are constantly analyzing these misleading chart runs.

I think the logic here is that high on the CHR chart = high on the digital chart = high on the Hot 100 = song of Summer 09.

Because H100 is much more Urban leaning than CHR chart due to its Urban leaning airplay chart (I don't think Best I Ever Had will be a summer anthem, but the song is in top 5 of H100 right now), I think it's better to determine Summer anthem by either Hot Digital Song chart (which shows songs really sell) or CHR chart (which shows songs that "mainstream" audience will hear the most)
Edit: However, I think either IGAF, Don't Trust Me or LoveGame has a chance to be the summer anthem of 2009.

I think that there is never a clear winner for summer anthem. Everybody will have a different one. Last year, for instance, mine was All I Want to Do by Sugarland. Was that anybody else's? Just because a song is played a lot or downloaded a lot, doesn't make it the general public's anthem. Everybody will have a different one.
That's just my view on this....

Well, at least two or three songs stand out every summer of every year.

Nope. Debbie is completely right. IGF hands down for me. This year, from what I've seen, it's everybody's party song, graduation song, drinking song, driving song, hang out song, and anything in between. It completely feels like the summer song to me.

I'm gonna go with I Gotta feeling.
Close behind though: Good Girls Go Bad, Best I Ever Had, Fire Burning and You Belong With Me.

All that, plus the fact that it has already hit #1 on the Hot 100 and will probably stay there for more weeks to come, make it the summer anthem of 2009.

Yeah, the summer anthem is really one thing that's better measured by digital sales and the Hot 100 than the CHR chart, considering the first two (especially digital sales) show what the public is really in to. The summer anthem is not what PDs choose to play the most, it's what the public feels the most.
This is especially proven by the fact that Umbrella and IKAG missed out on #1 on CHR due to two songs that really weren't nearly as popular as them, despite where their CHR peaks wound up.

I totally agree with this post. Plus that the "summer anthem" also depends on demographics and the location (due to climate, etc). I.e. people in the countryside will have a different anthem than say people from Chicago. But overall, it's really the digital sales.
