He's playing with Maroon 5 on August 31st in my city! I want "meet & greet" passes for Kris, not for Maroon 5. Ha. I doubt that's possible, though.

Eeek...those tour stats suck....I feel bad for him. His album is so good and he's so talented. Why do such talented people always seem to do more poorly than the ones who have no talent at all...

Yeah those tour stats are awful. He should probably stick to opening for people as he can't seem to draw a crowd on his own. 19E also made the fatal mistake of booking him into venues that were far too big for him. I just don't know would be smaller than the clubs and bars he's already playing at.

His management should just give the whole thing a massive re-think. This album is obviously dead in the water, they need to make a new album and really market him this time.

I just don't know would be smaller than the clubs and bars he's already playing at. I would disagree. The stats aren't good but he's drawing around 400 people. If he sticks to opening there is no guarentee those people will attend those shows and there is a risk of losing even the group he has now. He cannot afford to have those people move on. There is no law that states his audience can't grow over time, he's just going to have to work very hard to try to make it happen. I would make a few recommendations. Find someone who draws a similiar sized crowd and co-headline events. It would expand the size of the audience, they'd share the costs of the tour and maybe create some crossover between the groups. Also he might try getting booked as a steady opener on a tour rather then these scattered dates with half a dozen acts. Then plan a shadow club tour around those dates. People who see him open might be in the mood to check out a late show after the concert is over. I do think it's time to think about a new album. He'll very likely sale less with the second, they all do. If he has it out in time for the new Idol season that should help it's opening week a bit. I've only listened to a few songs on the album so I'm not sure if the problem is the music or image. Something clearly didn't connect so they need to find out what it is and if it can be corrected.

I actually think it's smarter to open for others because Kris clearly needs to expand his fanbase right now, rather than playing to the less than half full houses he's playing right now.
FWIW, 400-500 people is the amount that a mid-sized church holds. Kris needs to be able to play to crowds larger than a church audience to feasibly pay for a solo tour and expect it to be profitable after he pays for gas, equipment, lodging, all of his bandmates, his opener, his opener's band, his manager, his roadies, food, and other expenses.

Yeah, those draw numbers aren't great but the concert business is hurting this year. I see some good suggestions made. I can see the point of doing your own shows (keep the diehard fans you do have) and opening for others. I do agree that he would be better off being an opener for a big artist on a 30-40 date trek than hopping around to various acts. It's just really hard to tour on your own and pay a band with those kinds of numbers. I do think the label is showing him at least some support or they would have already pulled the plug.
I think David Cook's draws were better than this but also far from stellar. I'm going to go out on a limb right now and say that David opens some MB20 shows in late 2011 or early 2012. Rob Thomas' buddy, Matt Serletic, is producing his next album and Rob has already tweeted David once with some good words...so yeah, I see that happening. Kris needs to hitch onto a big tour like this on his second album to get things rolling in a more positive light. Opening for others really worked well for other AI alums like Carrie and Daughtry...both headline their own arena shows now (with Carrie obviously doing very well).

His concert over here in San Diego sold out a month or two in advance, hmmm... He is playing at 'Anthology' in San Diego. 'Anthology' is a 250-300 capacity venue, so it's not hard for him to sell out such a small venue.

POSTED: Thursday, Sep. 09, 2010 Kris Allen on post-Idol' career: Working with big names has taught me a lotBy JOHN J. MOSER - McClatchy-Tribune News Service Kris Allen says that when he won Season 8 of "American Idol" over perceived-favorite Adam Lambert in 2009, he wasn't guaranteed a career. So don't feel bad for the 25-year-old former Arkansas church music director that he's spending much of his first solo summer tour opening for big names such as Keith Urban, Maroon 5 or Barenaked Ladies. Not that Allen hasn't had success of his own. His self-titled debut album hit No. 11 on Billboard's albums chart, and its debut single, "Live Like We're Dying,' hit the Top 10 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The disc has sold more than 300,000 copies. In a recent phone call from Miami, where he was opening for Maroon 5, Allen discussed his career so far, as well as his future. LEHIGH VALLEY MUSIC: Hey Kris, how's it going?ALLEN: "It's going good, man."LVM: Let me talk a little bit about what you're doing this summer. You're playing some solo dates, but you're also opening for Maroon 5 and Keith Urban and Barenaked Ladies.ALLEN: "Yup, I think that's it, man."LVM: What is that like? What kind of experience is that opening up for established acts like that?ALLEN: "You know, it's cool to do the solo shows because you get to play a long set and kind of get really into it. But to open for these people is really great, man. We've learned so much, I've learned so much. And just being out on the road, talking to these people, watching their shows, seeing how they do things it's entertaining and informational and all of that stuff. It's really cool."LVM: It's interesting the mix of musical genres there: You've got Barenaked Ladies are hard to classify, I guess, but Keith Urban is the country pop and Maroon 5 is more straightforward pop. How are the different audiences reacting to you?ALLEN: "You know, it's different with all of them, obviously. The Barenaked Ladies shows, there's more an older crowd there The Barenaked Ladies have been around awhile. But I think we've had people come up to us and say, 'You know what? I did not know who you guys were, but I'm a fan now. You guys are great. And the Maroon 5 stuff is some younger people, some older people, so that's cool. I've only done one with those people. I think the country crowds are great because they're really into it. They're just happy to see Keith Urban and so our job is just to get up there and to get them psyched for the show. And I think are really like digging the music when we play those shows, too."LVM: We've got you opening for Keith Urban here, and the fair has a grandstand that holds like 10,000 people and you guys are approaching a sellout, so you guys are going to have a really good crowd here.ALLEN: Awesome.LVM: And Pennsylvania isn't necessarily a hotbed for country, but the fairs, the country fans come out to it and country acts really do well here.ALLEN: Awesome, man.LVM: Before we get off the subject, I want to talk about the fact that you won "American Idol" and yet you're doing some opening acts. I'm going to contrast that, if I could, to Adam Lambert, who's doing smaller venues, but strictly headlining shows. Was there any discussion that you were aware of? How is it decided that you do the shows with the bigger artists?ALLEN: Well, we did a headlining thing in June; we headlined for about a month, which was really cool. But for the rest of the summer we have been opening. And, you know, I think what 'American Idol' does is gives you the opportunity to have a music career. And most music careers start with opening for other bands. And, I mean, Maroon 5 was opening for people six, seven years ago. And so, hopefully, we'll get to the point where we can do all headlining stuff. But for us, man, we are so excited to get to do the shows that we are doing and getting to meet the people that we meet. And I think it's good for us to open, 'cause we are learning so much and I think it's part of the process. And I think we're happy to go through that process."LVM: Cool. I saw that the video for "The Truth" is out now. What was the thought process behind making that your second single?ALLEN: You know what? It was a conversation with myself, management and the label, and we all just thought that, hopefully, this song would connect with people lyrically and emotionally more than some things from the album. So we thought it would be a good thing to do. And so that's kind how that happened."I have to admit that "Live Like You're Dying" and then this both have sort of that very accessible sound they're both songs that people can hear and get into.ALLEN: Yeah. I think people can relate to it. So I think it's cool.LVM: I did see that on your website there was some discussion about the fact that single that was released to radio added Pat Monahan on it. Can you talk about that at all?ALLEN: Right. Yeah, I mean, it was a decision by the label. To be completely honest, they thought that because Pat wrote the song, they thought it would have a little bit more of an emotional feel to it. And no one can really deny how well Train is doing now, so, I mean, I think that was all part of it, too.LVM: Yeah, I gotta admit, that was a total surprise to me. I mean, I love Train's earlier stuff, but the fact that they came back so strong with "Soul Sister," that was just amazing to me.ALLEN: Yeah, we've done a few shows together, and sometimes I just want to run up to him and be like, 1/8in a high voice3/8 'Hey, soul sister.' It's funny.LVM: A couple of more questions about your debut disc. You got to write with some incredible people. Jon Foreman from Switchfoot. And I read somewhere you wrote a song, or were writing, with Mat Kearney.ALLEN: Um-Hmm. We ended up writing a song together. It just didn't end up on the album.LVM: Talk a little bit about the experience of getting to write with some really talented people.ALLEN: It was a little intimidating, to be honest. Growing up listening to those people and being a fan of them, you almost think ... for me, it was, not that I don't have any self-confidence, but it was going in there and like these guys have been doing their thing for a long time and obviously doing it really well. So it's almost like you want to just give them the reins like 'Here, do something with it.' 1/8Laughs3/8 But the funny thing was they were like, 'You know what? We want you to help, Kris. We want you to help out on this and be a part of it. This is your music and we just want to be here to help.' That was their role. So it was kind of a weird thing for me to get involved in that stuff, but you have to switch your mind and think, 'This is my music, and I want it to be like this.' It was cool to get their feedback on a lot of stuff, though.LVM: Speaking of that, are you writing for a second disc yet, or is it too early?ALLEN: I'm writing in my free time that I have. Definitely writing songs. But we're not in the studio at all and we've been on the road pretty nonstop since the end of May. And so there's no time to get that done. But hopefully we can get back in the studio sometime soon and get started on a second album."LVM: Do you think about what the process will be like? I know that, as with every 'American Idol' contestant who records an album, the first album comes together pretty quickly. Have you thought about what the process for the second one would be like? I mean, obviously, you take more time.ALLEN: Yeah, I mean, we talked about it with people and we want it to be different. We want it to be something that does take awhile not awhile, but enough time to where you can get it exactly right and feel incredible about it, and make sure the right songs are on there and working with the right producer and being in the right studio. You just want it to all feel right, you know? And so that's definitely the process that we're trying to take with it and take our time to make sure that whatever we put out is not just thrown together; that it's really thought out and that it's perfect, you know? You want it to be perfect.LVM: I saw that the "Idol Gives Back' episode that you did has raised over a quarter-million dollars now. How did the decision come about that you took the trip?ALLEN: The day there was that huge telethon for Haiti, and I was supposed to be answering phones or something like that for that. And the day I was supposed to do that, I was in the 19 1/8Entertainment, his management3/8 office and Simon Fuller comes up to me and says, 'You know what? Would you want to go to Haiti?' And, I mean, you can't say no to that! So we planned the trip, and it just happened, and we put it together with 'Idol Gives Back.' And I thought it was really one of the coolest things I've gotten to do.LVM: The results have been pretty significant, too. You don't sneeze at a quarter million dollars.ALLEN: Yeah.LVM: The post-'Idol' world that you're in now. Is it everything you imagined?ALLEN: Oh, man, I mean, I get to ride a lot of roller coasters. You know what, man? I really didn't have too many expectations for what was going to happen after the show. Because it could go a lot of different ways. And for me, I think it's happened kind of perfectly. I've gotten to meet pretty much a lot of different people. I mean, I went to a Paul McCartney show the other day. And, I mean, I'm a huge Beatles fan. And so getting to be able to do stuff like that, we're in the fifth row. Getting to play with the people. I mean, never mind Keith Urban. He's an amazing, amazing artist and getting to know him, not just listen to him or play with him, I mean, getting to know him and he's a really nice guy. I would say my life is pretty crazy right now. I can't complain about anything."LVM: Do comparisons with Adam Lambert at this point, more than a year later, does that bother you at all?ALLEN: For people that compare me and Adam, I think it's almost I don't want to say stupid, because that's not the right word. But it's a little crazy to me that people would even even on the show that they would compare us. There's no comparison between me and him. Our music is very different. We are very different. I mean, obviously, we're really good friends. But we're just so different from each other, there's no point in comparing us, because you're not going to come to any kind of conclusion there.LVM: Your family life you were a lone couple when you entered into this. How has that affected your station as far as where you guys are in your life plans?ALLEN: My wife has wanted me to play music for all of our relationship. And so, she's excited that I'm getting to do what I'm doing. Obviously it's not easy being away from her all the time. But she does get to come out on the road, and that's always fun. And we still have our life back home in Arkansas, and that's just changing things. But obviously we're really happy with the way things are. And we get about three weeks off here in a little bit. So that'll be nice.

"I Need To Know" was used in the latest episode of The Vampire Diaries. Pretty much the full song, too. Really is a great soundtrack song.

It looks like AWM will get at least 3 Hot AC adds this coming week. It's also getting played on KLAL, a CHR station in Little Rock. And Jive finally tweeted about getting people to request their local radio stations play it
Kris's tour with Lifehouse seems to be going really well so far. Last night he was honored by "Little Kids Rock" for his charitable work and advocacy for music education in schools.
And he's gotten some media attention the last few days between the "naked sleepwalking" story and the acoustic performances of AWM and NoBo that were posted on EW and (AWM only) MTVNews

Last night was the final stop on Kris' tour opening for Lifehouse. He decided to surprise people by debuting a new song, called Leave You Alone. Here's video of the song www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBo_0BQurPwIn his most recent interviews, Kris has said he hopes his 2nd album will be out in Spring 2011. Probably will be going into the studio to start recording in January
