Anyone else watching the special on CBS right now? I think we should have a discussion thread for it.
For starters, I think Sugarland did a good job on Adalida, but they so should've had Kristian take lead. The song turns rather lesbo with a female lead.
I haven't heard Toby sound so energetic in concert in ages. He really sounded great on Unwound. It sounds like he could've had a hit with it in 1994. I'll keep posting comments as the show progresses.
Wow, I don't think I've heard the original version of "The Cowboy Rides Away" more than once. Ronnie really seemed to fit this one, though.

B&D sound great. They should cut this as a bonus track for their next album.

I agree with the Toby comment. I really try to like him and love his old stuff but he is so boring.

Bleah. "It Ain't Cool..." is probably one of the weakest songs in King George's catalog, but Blake and Miranda sound GREAT on this song. Someone give these guys more duets, NOW.
Argh. WHY did they shoehorn in the Marty tribute? Keith sounds great singing traditional country for once, but it's totally irrelevant.

Ronnie Dunn has such a perfect voice for singing traditional country. I wish radio would embrace that side of B&D. That song suited his voice to a "T".

Weird. John gave the Reader's Digest condensed version of Armadillo by Morning. And murdered it to boot.

Ah, another tribute to a previous artist of the decade. Is it just me, or is Faith trying to imitate Loretta?

Wow, did they slow down Give It Away. Jamey and Lee Ann should try a duet sometime.

Womack is still one of the top three female singers. She is so spot on. LOVED the duet of Give It Away.

Oh wow, a more original interpretation. Jack's really rocking up All My Ex's.
I didn't know Troy Gentry wore glasses.

Not a big Jack Ingram fan so I am not impressed at all. Can't wait to hear MG do some Alabama.
Not bad. Of course I love Alabama and they did a decent job. Bring on Jamie Foxx....... :o
I am so done with Faith Hill. She has rendered herself totally irrelevant.

I'm enjoying the show. I thought Miranda and Blake were one of the best and smoothest of the night so far. Nice to hear Blake's fine vocals showcased for once. I liked the duet of Give it Away but Lee Ann had that deer in the headlights look that got on my nerves. She sounded so good in practice. Maybe she was really nervous. She still sounded good but I think it was better in practice.

Taylor is sounding much better live in my opinion. This song makes good use of her lower range.

TAYLOR NAILED IT!! Very impressive. I need that on my mp3 player. That's the best I have heard her live.
Run was the number one song on my personal charts the year it was out. I have been critical of Taylor's live appearences but that was really good.

Wow, I never imagined You Look So Good in Love as an R&B song but it really works as one.

Not loving the sound mix tonight. Again. *sigh*
The performances I've enjoyed most so far are those from Miranda/Blake (whose voices meshed better here than they did in their recording of "Home," in my view) and, surprisingly to me, Toby. Brooks & Dunn turned in a pretty strong performance, too. I expected more from the Lee Ann/Jamey duet on "Give It Away" -- Lee Ann didn't quite seem in control reaching for those high "give it away"s, Jamey sounded wobbly when he sang and it just didn't look like a comfortable performance from either.
I agree about Taylor's lower register sounding better than her pinched upper register but I still don't think she controlled her voice very well (she struggled for volume on the lowest notes and didn't maintain a consistent tone or volume throughout). She also has these really leaden phrasing tendencies that don't work well with country songs. I think her performances of covers show that she really is meant to sing her own music, because she doesn't interpret others' lyrics credibly. Still, a more tolerable performance from her than usual.
As off-putting as Jamie Foxx can be when he talks (and I'm not a big fan of his singing voice, either), I think he has strong interpretive skills and a good musical imagination. His original material is rather bland to me, but I think he was interesting here (in a non-euphemistic sense).

Alan Jackson, always so humble. I never realized it, but his current voice is pretty close to the way George sounded in his earliest days — you can hear that George was a little higher and more nasal on songs like The Fireman.

ENOUGH of Jamie Foxx. With Rascal Flatts on the awards and now this. He's not bad but there is no reason for him to be there. I thought the duet with RF was great and should have been released but Gary ruined it live that night. Dosen't Jamie have the number one song on the charts right now?

I actually am quite surprised he hasn't tried country yet, what with all the crossovers. He doesn't even have a chart single right now. LeAnn sounds great as always.

"Blame It" peaked at #2 on the Hot 100, but was #1 on the R&B/Hip Hop chart for awhile (Jeremih's "Birthday Sex" knocked it off last week). It's also currently #3 at pop radio, but is unlikely to get any higher.

Heheh. That CD joke was a good one. I wonder if George will actually cut that song or if it's just a blank set up for the joke. Dierks seems sorta shaky vocally, but this is a different kind of song for him.
By the way, anyone know who's in the band? I'm pretty sure that's Paul Franklin doing the steel work. He has a pretty distinctive style.
Martina doing Garth. It makes sense in a way, given his connection with her career.

Dierks is good at what he does and that type of song is not what he does.
Martina did great as usual.
