Ooh, an original song. Please tell me this makes it to an album. I would bet anything that it's gonna chart.
Wow, he still sounds really squawk-y and nasal and high-pitched live, although not quite as bad as I've heard from him before. At least he's actually PLAYING his guitar for once.
Nice all-star ending, too. Troubadour really has grown on me.

Tim sounds a little more twangy than usual. I think Tim did a nice job and he looked very classy but I agree he was very twangy in parts. Really reminded me of when he first started, back in the Don't Take The Girl days lol.

Alan Jackson, always so humble. I never realized it, but his current voice is pretty close to the way George sounded in his earliest days — you can hear that George was a little higher and more nasal on songs like The Fireman. I've always thought that Alan has a more resonant voice than George. But I agree the tone didn't sound all that different here. I forgot to say that I enjoyed Keith on the Marty Robbins sequence. * sigh* A phone call made me miss the last forty minutes or so of performances, so I'm hoping some kind soul will put them up on YouTube. I especially wanted to hear Martina sing "The Dance."

I would put it on Youtube if I could -- I thought Martina did such an awesome job with "The Dance".
Also, I thought Taylor Swift sounded great tonight.
I was surprised that nobody performed "Check Yes or No" -- one of my favorite George Strait hits ever!!!

^thank you. can anyone let me in on the reason why some people didn't sing george strait songs at this tribute to him? i mean, it kind of seems like a slap in the face, like the artist is saying "oh i like this person more than you" kind of thing...idk, i would think you would sing george's song at HIS special!

^^They were honoring the artists who won the same award in the previous decades, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's to recognize those who have achieved the same status that Strait was being honored for.
By the way, I think that Taylor's performance was amazing. Very great show!

The tribute was because George won the artist of the decade award.
Garth -- the previous 90's decade winner -- handed over the trophy to George towards the end of the show.
Almost any awards show will honor or at least mention the past winners and history of the award.

The show did good in the tv ratings....#1 overall for the nite & #2 in 18-49. Here are the numbers...it is probably worth noting that the week after the end of May sweeps is the start of a typically weaker primetime slate of reruns and summer programming. The second hour of the special fared better than the first. Ratings info from HitFix (italics are mine, meant to emphasize the Strait-relevant fare) ETA: kevin59, thanks so much for the video links! Martina and LeAnn's voices are so gorgeous. I felt like LeAnn needed more time to get into the song emotionally. Still, it's a treat hearing rich and expressive voices like theirs.

I thought that most everyone sounded good at the special. I thought there were some strange moments however. Really wished that Martina had done a medley of Garth songs instead of just one. Thinks that Jamie Foxx needs to have a moment in time where he JUST sings...enough with the comedy routine. Really felt that the finale number was extremely awkward. Most of the artists looked confused and uncomfortable and the shot of Garth standing in the background just smiling, not singing, was creepy. Plus, they should have sang something other than Troubadour. Classic GS would have been much better.

I thought that Martina's version of "The Dance" was so powerful and amazing.....I wish she would record it for itunes or something. In my opinion, that was the best performance of the night.

We need to petition for a Mirana/Blake duet album. DANG they sounded so good together on "It Ain't Cool To Be Crazy About You".
EDIT: Also, the Lee Ann and Jamey duet was extremely well performed. I liked how he talked his parts and how they changed the words a little bit. Fun performance!
Ok, so I'm just getting to watch the whole thing. Wanted to add that I loved Jack Ingram's rendition of "All My Ex's Live In Texas". He put more emotion in it than George ever did. He turns one of George's worst songs into a good, fun country song. I hope he records this on his next album.

This show surprised me -- I wasn't expecting more than a couple of good performances but there were more than 10. I won't comment on the ones I disliked, but I want to give Jamey J some credit, because I've criticized him elsewhere. He did a terrific job. B&D did a great job on Cowboy, Keith Urban brought a lot of life to his Robbins medley, and for the first time ever I enjoyed a Taylor Swift performance. Plus I agree with bbn that Jack Ingram brought a whole new life to a song I have never liked.
This should be a model for future televised concerts -- a little less talk, a lot more action, and a lot of artists who threw themselves into the event. I'm not a fan of shortened versions of songs, but that's the only objection I had to the whole event.

I read the comment ^ ^ as a reference to Jamie Foxx, but it could have been Jamey J instead. I'll bet $3 it was Jamie Foxx the poster had in mind.
