I just updated Midnight Star's website, and their song "Operator" fell from #19 off of the top 40, a drop of over 21 notches, and it wasn't on a holiday week. Can any of you confirm if this was the largest drop off in the pre-PPW era from the top 40 era, that didn't involve a holiday? Thanks!! www2.uta.edu/hunt/charts/midnightstar.html

Guns n' Roses "Patience" also dropped off from number 19, back in 1989. June 9 was the last week it charted, so no effect from any holiday activity. Later that same year, "Partyman" by Prince also fell off from number 19. It's last week on the chart was September 29. I will rack my brain, but these are the only two others I can think of.

I think "Operator," "Patience," and "Partyman" are the only ones that dropped out from number 19. Ulij20 posted a list several years back. I remember "True" by Spandau Ballet, and "Kiss The Bride" by Elton John, both from 1983, dropping off from number 20. He listed several songs that dropped off the chart at higher positions after the Holidays. The final week of 1984 "Out of touch" and "Hello again." fell out from the mid teens. I also remember Phil Collins "Both sides of the story" falling out from number 18 the last week in 1993.

Right - that's it Pete! Those were 2 songs I was trying to remember. Thanks, and I'll update the website.

Looking back at 1983, Billy Joel's "Tell Her About It" also fell off from number 19 in October. Now we have a 4 way tie which we need to break. I haven't looked back at the charts from 1974-1976 yet. So there's always the possibility.

Cyndi Lauper's Money Changes Everything had one of the most bizarre CHR runs ever.
30-21-20-20-OFF
Four weeks on the chart in total for a top 20 hit, AND two weeks at it's peak!

Plays per week which Radio & Records introduced in April 1994. The charts were previously compiled by playlists that radio stations used to estimate their top songs. These charts moved a lot faster. Although PPW is more accurate, I prefer the older, obsolete route.

For the record, "Hello Again" by the Cars dropped off from #16 and "Out Of Touch" fell from #17.
For the near seven-year period that the charts only went down to #30, there were several songs that fell off the chart from #11, and after the 1982-83 holiday break, two songs - "Shadows Of The Night" by Pat Benatar and "Truly" by Lionel Richie fell out of the chart from inside the Top Ten. IIRC, they fell off from #10 and #7, respectively.

I don't have my charts in front of me, but check "Step By Step" by New Kids on the Block.

OK, I found another one that fell off from #19 without holiday involved: "Have you never been mellow" by Olivia N-john.

I found yet another one. "Fly Away" by John Denver. On January 23, 1976 it fell from 14-19 in its final week in the top 40. So now we have a 6 way tie!

I'm pretty sure Good Charlotte has some song (the beginning went, "Something Isn't Right....." dropped like.... -1700 spins and went from #22 to OFF in like 2005. Can anyone confirm this?

That was during PPW. This is for songs before 2004.
