Most #1s in a single year for the PPW era?
In 2008, 13 songs hit #1 on the pop chart. We're only in July and LoveGame is the 12th #1 so far this year. The record for most #1s in the PPW (based on my count) is 15. (2003 and 2006) Could we reach 20 #1s this year?
The last time we saw 20 #1s on the Pop chart was back in 1991. There were 22 that year.

LOL why are you even asking then? Unless only two more songs hit #1, we'll break the record. And I highly doubt it's going to be less than 3 songs... else we're in for a rough rest of the year.

Well then the title of the thread probably shouldn't be a question. But I see the question in the post now... to reach 20 by the end of the year? Well with the way things are going it looks very possible! Maybe the digital/youtube era has people becoming more ADD about music and radio is picking up on this. Lovin the turnover though, less stagnant charts are more fun.

I don't think we will make it to 20, because if you look at the patterns/trends, it was the beginning of the year that was really unusual. We had 4 1 week #1s just in January/February alone. But ever since The All American Rejects reached #1, things got back to normal. We've had a handful of 4+ week #1s and will probably continue to do so. I predict we'll probably only get one more 1 week #1 (history/patterns show that there is always a one week #1 in September).
I'm curious...did you count "Live Your Life" for 2008 or 2009 or is it counted in both? Because the song hit #1 in both years non consecutively.

I think the record is easily in reach. Katy Perry should be lucky #13, then BEP stands a good chance at making #14. Keri, Taylor and Cobra Starship are also ones to watch; though none of them have a cemented CHR track record, they're all pretty much blowing up right now. Taylor also has a previous #1 to her advantage. Between now and years' end, I think we'll see even more record pop up as potential contenders.

I like the fact that we're having a lot of number ones this year. Maybe it means radio is getting more diverse, and wants to play a wider range of songs. It's still heavily biased towards some artists, but a lot of songs are starting to chart in 2009 as well, not just a lot of #1s.
The List of '09 #1s: Britney Spears "Womanizer" {Was also #1 in 2008 (during the non-recurrent weeks)} T.I. "Live Your Life (feat. Rihanna)" {Was also #1 in 2008} Lady GaGa "Just Dance (feat. Colby O'Donis)" Beyoncé "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)" Taylor Swift "Love Story" {First country-crossover to hit #1} Britney Spears "Circus" The All-American Rejects "Gives You Hell" Flo Rida "Right Round (feat. Ke$ha)" Lady GaGa "Poker Face" {2nd highest spin peak of all-time; highest of current panel era} The Black Eyed Peas "Boom Boom Pow" 3OH!3 "Don't Trust Me" Lady GaGa "LoveGame"
PLUS, 140 songs have charted in the top 50 in 2009! I don't remember the exact number, but isn't that close to how many charted last year? We could have close to 200 songs chart by the end of the year! :o

I like more number ones. More variety.

30 #1s? Ya please NO. I don't know if I like having more songs go to #1, it kind of cheapens the title when any run of the mill song can grab a single week at #1 and be labeled a #1 hit forever.

I did include TI for this year.
BTW there's been 2 years of 30+ #1s. There were 30 in 1987, and the record is 31 in 1986.

Taylor Swift "Love Story" {First country-crossover to hit #1} No it's not. Kenny Rogers' Lady hit #1 on pop in 1980.

Ah yes, that was back when there was the element of surprise as to what would be the #1 song of the year. Seriously, in 1986, I knew that it was a close race between "Live To Tell", "Stuck With You" and "Higher Love". (I was glad that "Stuck With You" won out, though) In 1987, there were two songs that I thought were likely to be #1 (and, once again, the song I liked best was #1) Nowadays, you pretty much know what the top song of the year is going to be by May, if not sooner. Perhaps there'll be an element of surprise once again this year (then again, I always become curious and check the Mediabase YTD chart, although that has a different time frame).
