You're being generous. If IWTKWLI flops, this isn't even going gold. That is a definite possibility; I guess I am just trying to be optimistic. lol You know it's bad when an optimistic outcome is 650k.

Obsessed is such a topical song that I just don't think it connected with the general public - at least, not enough to make them buy the album. I know some people are going to cite airplay as some sort of proof that it appeals to the general public, but wanting to hear it on the radio and wanting to spend $15 on an album are two very different propositions. Just look what happened with Sean Kingston's recent disaster of an album for proof of this. What would you do if were charged with righting this ship or preparing her for next album release? (and I dont say this snarkily or sarcastically, I am sincerely interested in your opinion b/c no matter the artist you tell it like it is) I think they are making the best move possible by releasing H.A.T.E.U. as the next single. It is the strongest track on the album IMO. But, I do not think this album has any radio-ready singles that stand out and are begging to be released. This must have been a conscious decision on Mariah's part. However, IWTKWLI should never have been released - a mistake from the outset. I think that, years from now, this album will stand as a commercial failure but a fan favourite. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing - Mariah is able to weather commercial failures better than probably anyone else in the industry because of her stellar track record. If I was the label head and was demanding a commercial smash from her next album, then I would ask her to look at what the general public wants to hear from her - which is, a radio-ready, contemporary ballad or midtempo hit that has broad-based appeal. Then I'd actually time the single release accordingly, hype it effectively and ensure the promotional schedule was rigorous enough. Whatever the first single is, it needs airplay, yes, but it also needs to connect with casual fans and the average person who would not instinctively buy a Mariah Carey album if asked to. And given my responsibilities as head of the label, I would ensure that the right single choices were made - because the second single is often more important than the first. Have to keep the momentum going somehow, and on the last two projects they have failed miserably at this. Realistically, though, I think fans are going to have to come to terms with the fact that, as Mariah hits 40 and moves beyond that milestone (be she 39 or 40, it's coming soon), her dominance at radio is going to wane somewhat and her sales are not going to reach previous levels. I think this album shows that Mariah already has realized this and moved on. She didn't make music for the radio with this album - she made it for herself and for the fans. Isn't that what an artist is supposed to do? There is a life beyond sales, and I think with marriage and other endeavours, Mariah is now focused on the bigger picture. Her status ensures she is always going to have a record contract and she is always going to be able to release new music, and I think her career will likely evolve in a different direction from here on out.

Maybe it would've been best if she stuck with the September 15th date?

At the end of the day, it's their own fault. Bet she won't be thanking us for the #3 debut on twitter. lol...she'll disappear until the weekend. But seriously, although I adore MC and Memoirs is an amazing album - this era lacks excitement. Everything has been so unorganized and her TV performances have been lackluster (although her voice has improved). Mimi has become so BORING to watch. It's like watching a mummy perform. There's no IT factor there anymore. Nothing would wow the viewers to run and cop the cd. Also, her latest TV interviews have consisted of her fragrance and how ugly they made her look on Precious. I miss the times when MC would actually talk about the music. But let's enjoy the album and hope IDJ, Mariah and all parties involved turn this project around and expose it to broader audiences.

I think the biggest issue is that the marketing of this album is terrible. This is an Urban album and needs to be marketed that way. Why in the hell would you release an AC leaning track, IWTKWLI, when the rest of your album is not that way? They need to focus on getting her Urban and Rhythmic hits and hope the singles crossover to pop. She needs to figure out a way to hold figures steady for the holiday sales.

can we play the blame game... , whats your guys theories....
Minor media outlets seem to deem Perez as there Bible, Im sure his disatisfaction toward her rnb inspired album didnt assist. With alot of negativity spread through twitter and online through his rants. I hope getting married hasnt contributed, that would be lame.. Gosh I cant even be bothered analysing. As much as I know that MIMI will be dissapointed as results surely would matter to her,I hope she knows that we are proud of her and love her new album. I hope some minor consolation can happen and she can get a number 1 single...... Ok im not gunna lie. I want to run down the street shouting the eff word...

I still think H.A.T.E.U. could be an explosive smash. But they have to learn from their mistakes, this era can still be saved.

Fans who picked up Mariah Carey's latest Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel most likely noticed the absence of features, but the singer is about to make up for it. Tricky Stewart and Trey Songz spill details of the top-secret remix album.
Details are slowly emerging about the project, which will include remixes to every song on Memoirs. "There's gonna be remixes to everything," says Tricky. "I'm actually doing some remixing myself currently 'cause some of these records were so much fun to make. It's easy to go in and do a remix." The mega-producer already has something in mind for the diva's Foreigner cover. "I'm gonna do a remix to 'I Want to Know What Love Is' myself. I'mma raise the tempo up. I'mma try to make it into something else." He may even add a guest to it. "Once I get the beat and if it calls for the right person, I can get anybody on the phone I want to right now, so I will be using my Rolodex for that." One of the featured artists on the new project will be Trey Songz, who exclusively discloses that he recorded a remix to one of Memoirs' cuts last month. "Mariah Carey, I believe she's doing a remix album and I'm on a record entitled 'Inseparable'" he shares. Trey put everything aside once he got the call. "I actually only had a day to do it. I did it on my day off. [They were] very professional, very adamant on wanting to get it done. They made sure we had all we needed. I just went in and got it done.".

I think the overall total for "Memoirs" will be more humbling than first week sales. I'm fully expecting this to sell around 650k in the US when all is said and done. I Want To Know What Love Is is going to give the final blow to this era and by the time H.A.T.E.U. is released all chance of a revival will be gone (though I'm hoping, as a single, H.A.T.E.U. will still perform moderately well at least). Perhaps a re-release could fatten the overall numbers just a bit (but I wouldn't expect a platinum album either way). Wow doom and gloom! I think it could turn around if they release H.A.T.E.U. like right now or in a week or two. Right now. Especially if they have a hot remix for it.

The invite-only exclusive performance by Mariah at the P.C. Richard & Son Theater in Tribeca, New York packed the venue to its capacity last night. Mariah looked stunning and performed "Obsessed," "Always Be My Baby," "H.A.T.E.U.," "I Want To Know What Love Is," and "We Belong Together." The show was recorded and will be put up on iheartradio.com at some point.
At the show, Mariah mentioned that although they will still be working on "I Want To Know What Love Is," her next single is "H.A.T.E.U." and that she absolutely loves the remixes for "H.A.T.E.U."

I'm more disappointed for Mariah. But at the end of the day, for me, it's just numbers aye... I love the album & no matter whether it debuted at #1 or #20, that doesn't change my appreciation for the final product she turned in this time. Such a strong album. I'm happy with it, therefore I'm pretty indifferent about the stats at this point.

I know some people are going to cite airplay as some sort of proof that it appeals to the general public, but wanting to hear it on the radio and wanting to spend $15 on an album are two very different propositions. Just look what happened with Sean Kingston's recent disaster of an album for proof of this. I'm a Whitney, Sade fan. Here is what i would do: 1. If IDKWLI is doing well at ac and urban a/c go ahead and release the video- if it is not, shelve it and wait a a week and drop the next single 2. Please don't have Mriah showing up in tight fitting, young looking close, that is a turn off for her old base who are the ones actually buying records these days- if you don't believe me then how do u partially explain Maxwell's, whitney's, Barbra's sucess. Young folks download tracks illegally or only purchase one song from itunes and ignore the album. 3. Please, please do not release the remix album- it's too soon- if the public isn't feeling u now, they won't when the remix drops and they have their choice of carrie underwood, leona lewis, akesy, MaryJ etc. Releasing a new album or MOIA remixes or tackign them on smells like desparation- i'm not hating on Mariah, just giving u an impartial opinion. 4. Stay away from adding Drake on your remixes- again , it will look desparate and people wills ay that she is jumping on the hottest rapper right now to save her album. 5. Have her do Letterman, Leno and just stand and sing, do asless whispering. 6. Finally, to be honest, I don't think anything can save this era/ablum- 2nd week drop will be brutal, and then 3rd week and 4wk and then Carrie and Leona. 7. I think promote the album then go away for 2 years and come back inspired and hope that the people appreciate the absence andnew music. That is my best advice. What would you do if were charged with righting this ship or preparing her for next album release? (and I dont say this snarkily or sarcastically, I am sincerely interested in your opinion b/c no matter the artist you tell it like it is)

I've been a Mariah fan for well over a decade. I've bought all her albums and consider myself to be a crazed and loyal fan. I bought MOAIA bc I felt that I had to not bc it excited me. This album lacks something. The lackluster vocals simply aren't up to par with Mariah. She hits whistle notes and belts here and there but most of the album is still whispers and mumbles. So many songs had so much potential but she killed them with her vocals. A lot of you will disagree with me which leads me to ask myself whether I've reached a plateau when it comes to Mariah and nothing she releases will please my ear. It makes me very sad to think that's the case.

If Island Records and Mariah had kept the original album release date Mariah would have been number 1 with these album sales.
Colbie Cailatt sold 106K units that week and got her first number 1 album.

People generally have a stronger appreciation for current, fresh material regardless of the quality. I think there a few good tracks on the album, but I would rank it as one of my least-favourite Mariah albums on the whole. To me, it sounds like she recorded 948 different versions of Bliss and Yours and then put them on the album along with Obsessed and another cover. It doesn't excite me. That being said, I respect her work and what she has done with this album, because it clearly wasn't made with the intention of spinning off massive hits. And it's clearly a favourite with the majority of fans, at least for now.

It's not doom and gloom, it's called looking at things from a realistic perspective. If it were doom and gloom I would have said something to the effect of "She's not going to go platinum with an album ever again! This is so terrible, her career is over!" If you want to reference "doom and gloom" posts you should head over to the Hits Daily Double thread or even some posts in this very thread; they'd work a hell of a lot better than mine. They're not going to be this smart about it, record labels rarely are. Realistically, they'll probably keep peddling I Want To Know What Love Is as the album falls further and further down the charts.

Well, going by that criterion, Obsessed is also not representative of the album. Most of the tracks on the album are Urban ballads - not midtempo bangers.

The remix album sounds like the label selling out Mariah's artistic vision for this project. When was the last time adding random rappers actually added to the quality of a Mariah song? It's been a while.

And it kills me that Mariah thought IWTKWLI could be as big as "without ýóu". I think she knew that it wasn't going to reach the heights of "Without You" but she was referring to reviving some international appeal which is still *might* do. But yeah, it's not going to blow up anywhere near the size of "Without You".

Mariah didn't do well for four reasons: 1) Pushed back the album too many times and confused fans regardless of the last minute promo. 2) Released the album against a lot of competition in a bad market. Meaning that people had to chose between Paramore, Madonna, Barbara and at least 4 other releases besides herself. 3) Let's face it she didn't market her cd to the tweens and suffered for that. They bought the Paramore cd because of Twilight and that is all! And Barbara is a legend with her own followers and when push comes to shove the older generation that she attempted to capture again flocked to Barbara instead. 4) She released the horrid "I Want To Know What Love Is" which was basically "Bye Bye" part 2 and just like when that track was released the cd tanked and as a result she scarred fans away thinking that this wasn't like her past records and was something different!
For Mariah to save this she needs to: 1) Release "H.A.T.E. U." and "Up Out My Face" as Beyonce does to flood the market with amazing tracks from her cd to garner the proper attention and her cd probably will rise to # 1 in the next couple weeks. 2) Do PROMO of tracks above that fans want to hear! She wasted Oprah for "I Want To Know What Love Is!" 3) PROMOTE radio! PROMOTE televison! PROMOTE live shows!
Lastly, she will do platinum regardless but she can do much better and maybe even score one more #1 song and album if she changes her strategy!

It's been a while. The remix album is going to produced by Tricky. Remix albums work better when there are different producers doing the remixes. It's silly to have the original producer to remix their own track.

Re-doing a very popular cover is very risky. You have to expect backlash. A lot of fans love Foreigner's original version of IWTKWLI.
In December 2008, the UK & Irish fans were FURIOUS when Alexandra Burke did a cover of Jeff Buckley's definitive cover of "Hallelujah." The fans were livid and they started a campaign to make sure that Alexandra didn't go to #1 with that single. Of course she went to number 1 on the UK Singles Chart but, they purchased Jeff's version of "Hallelujah" and got it to number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and Leonard Cohen's original version went to number 36 on the UK Singles Chart.
