Martin, I definitely didn't view you as someone illiterate or one who doesn't understand radio. I think everyone here in the CHR/Pop section of Pulse follows CHR one way or another. I just wanted to point out that a station doesn't just to play the national Top 20 when it debuts, or ever. You've actually analyzed the situation quite well by bringing up 92 Q. In fact, in WERQ's first year that station even played songs like "losing My Religion" by R.E.M., and played some Dance titles its first couple of years.
Slinky, whats up man, good seeing you in here.
Anyways, Rhythmic leaning CHRs or CHRs with a strong Rhythmic/Pop flavor tend to do well. Look at San Francisco - Movin 99.7 is up to a 3.1 share with nearly 1.1 million listeners.

Haha thanks, just checking, its alot of people on this board with attitudes and I gotta check people every once in a while lol. And yeah I think it would be best for Z104.3 to go with a Rhythmic direction since DC and Baltimore is lacking a true Rhythmic. However, a regular CHR would work too. Interesting fact about WERQ, I definitely didn't know that! Did they debut as a Rhythmic/Top 40 format and then evolve into an Urban in the 90s?

Question, has Mix 106.5 supported Kid Cudi's "Day N Night" prior to tonight?
Mix 106.5 also plays some fun throwbacks between 12-5 PM (especially around noon or 3 PM) like JJ Fad's "Supersonic", Sir Mix A Lot's "Baby Got Back", Ja Rule "Livin It Up", Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop", 50 Cent's "In Da Club", Destiny's Child "No, No No", Blackstreet's "No Diggity", They also throw in some older Dance titles at those hours like Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone", Aqua's "Barbie Girl"
Surprisingly, Mix 106.5 still airs the Hot A/C version of American Top 40...

I honestly haven't heard Day N Nite ever on Mix 106.5. Im gonna go with my gut and say no. And I dont know why, but Mix 106.5 are VERY hesitant about playing any songs with the slightest rhythmic appeal, I rarely hear Knock You Down on that station. They are really hesitant about leaving their Hot A/C format and they probably choose to air the Hot A.C version of At40 so songs like Best I Ever Had, Run This Town, Knock You Down, Hotel Room Service, etc. wont get played.

Overall I guess this has a pretty good playlist - it's rhythmic-leaning but not to the point where it's unacceptable, since they're still playing most of the top songs.
I think the urban tracks are just surprising because new stations tend to play it safe at first, so the fact that this station is playing songs that barely anyone is spinning is a little odd at first glance. It could definitely turn out to be an interesting station though - I don't have a problem with urban crossovers as long as there are no big CHR tracks being ignored.

92 Q debuted as a Crossover station. I think they came on the scene just as B-104 left the format, or was on its last legs and leaning adult. So we're talking about 1991.
Even Washington DC's 95.5 PGC used to play some non Urban stuff. In its first incarnation WPGC was a very successful CHR up until the early 80s. In fact, Scott Shannon was its program director in 1980, and a couple of years later conservative talk-show host Glenn Beck somehow made it to the station (after getting his start at Kube 93 Seattle). In the late 80s WPGC came back as a crossover station. It definitely leaned Urban, but it did play a bit of Dance and Freestyle records. It was a Rhythmic CHR all throughout the 90s, although it rarely played anything that wasn't Urban or Hip Hop. And yet, even in 1995, WPGC was giving some airplay to songs by the likes of Real Mccoy. The following year Z-104 came on the scene with a Dance friendly CHR/Pop sound (heavily influenced by the success of the new 103.5 KTU New York) and 95.5 PGC stopped trying to play those types of records.

www.facebook.com/98online?v=feed&story_fbid=171849714405&ref=mfLooks like the new call letters will be WZFT. Also, the station is being promoted on the website of...Country station WPOC! Scroll down to the middle of their homepage www.wpoc.com/main.htmlAlso, Clear Channel management has said this station will be modeled after 3 of its other CHRs, all different, but all major markets - Z-100 New York, 102.7 KIIS-FM L.A., and Hot 99.5 Washington.

I love that its going to be modeled after KIIS, Z100, and Hot 99.5, I can't even describe how epic that sounds. Now I'm looking forward to a very diverse playlist, because KIIS is known to play some fresh rhythmic hits, while Hot 99.5 has excellent programming, and Z100, well, I dont have to explain that one.

I heard Knock You Down ad nauseam on 106.5, are we listening to the same station? They also played Day N' Night quite a bit. I've been listening to this station for years and actually thought they threw in a decent amount of more rhythmic leaning songs more recently. I find myself alternating between 106.5 and 104.3 now, I think both are really good stations. Question, has Mix 106.5 supported Kid Cudi's "Day N Night" prior to tonight? Yeah I saw their playlist as soon as I had left that comment, but didnt come back to correct it. I just remember listening back in the spring and I could barely find any CHR songs.. it was all Hot A/C. So the fact that they have a few Rhythmic song's in rotation suprises me.

I just heard them segue from the Police's "King Of Pain" into David Guetta's "Sexy Chick". If that's the norm for them, Z104.3 is going to eat Mix for lunch. Mix needs to either get more current, and more rhythmic, or go back to Hot AC. I like some elements of what they're doing- the 90's throwbacks are fun. It would be cool if they were a 90's flavored CHR, but they have to cut the 80's and up the tempo a bit.
