Thanks to blackberryaddict for posting this! Baltimore has finally got a brand new CHR, this will be competing against Top 10 Market CHR WIHT/Hot 99.5 in Washington D.C., and Hot-AC leaning CHR Mix 106.5 in Baltimore. Z104.3 is under operations by Clear Channel. Here is the playlist, beginning at 12pm today. 12:00 - BRITNEY SPEARS 3 (PERFECT WAY TO START OFF A CHR!) 12:04 - JAY-Z/RIHANNA/KANYE WEST Run This Town 12:08 - COBRA STARSHIP Good Girls Go Bad f/L. Meester 12:12 - MARIAH CAREY Obsessed 12:16 - LADY GAGA Paparazzi 12:19 - DAVID GUETTA Sexy Chick f/Akon 12:23 - DRAKE KANYE LIL WAYNE EMINEM Forever 12:28 - BLACK EYED PEAS Meet Me Halfway 12:32 - 3OH!3 Don't Trust Me 12:35 - JAY SEAN Down f/Lil Wayne 12:38 - JASON DERULO Watcha Say 12:42 - PITBULL Hotel Room Service 12:46 - TAYLOR SWIFT You Belong With Me 12:50 - KERI HILSON Knock You Down 12:54 - PINK Please Don't Leave Me 12:58 - JAY-Z Empire State Of Mind f/Alicia Keys 1:02 - LADY GAGA - Lovegame 1:06 - MARIO Break Up f/Gucci Mane 1:10 - BEYONCE Sweet Dreams 1:14 - PITBULL I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho) 1:18 - BRITNEY SPEARS 3 1:21 - MILEY CYRUS Party In The USA 1:24 - DRAKE Best I Ever Had 1:28 - CASCADA Evacuate The Dancefloor 1:32 - KESHA Tik Tok 1:36 - BLACK EYED PEAS I Gotta Feeling www.z1043.comA little bit more info... On September 5, 2003, the station flipped to Smooth Jazz as WSMJ. During WSMJ's (near) five-year run, it was nominated by the Radio & Records Industry for "Smooth Jazz Station of the Year" (2005), as well as, one nomnination and one win for "Program Director of the Year" (2005 & 2007) On May 23, 2008 at 9am EDT, the station began stunting with Christmas music, after playing Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye) by Gladys Knight and the Pips. At noon the same day, the station launched into a 1990's-intensive modern rock format similar to other Clear Channel modern rockers in Grand Rapids, MI, Philadelphia, and Hartford, CT. On May 29, 2008, the station changed its call letters from WSMJ to WCHH. The WCHH call letters were last used in 2003 by an Urban Contemporary station in Charlotte, North Carolina. In January 2009, the transmitter was moved from northeast of the city to Television Hill near downtown, with hopes of improving signal coverage in the Howard and Anne Arundel County suburbs. At 10:00 am today, the station briefly stunted as an R&B station as Charm 104.3, before officially flipping to Top 40 at 12PM local time as "Z104.3". Also... this station does not speed up their songs unlike Hot 99.5. (Not taking shots, I like stations that speed up their songs.) ______ They have decided to do 10,000 songs in a row.

CLEAR CHANNEL Alternative WCHH (CHANNEL 104.3)/BALTIMORE, which was doing some stunting as CHARM 104.3, BALTIMORE's BEST R&B" with a nod to its Top 40 heritage when it was WBSB (BALTIMORE's BEST B104) back in 1980, has returned to those Top 40 roots as Z104.3 "BALTIMORE's NEW HIT MUSIC CHANNEL".
Z104.3 will be running commercial free for the first 10,000 songs, and ill feature today’s best artists, RIHANNA, JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, KANYE WEST, TAYLOR SWIFT, BLACK EYED PEAS, BRITNEY SPEARS, LADY GAGA, JAY Z, BEYONCE, and more.
CLEAR CHANNEL WASHINGTON DC & BALTIMORE President/Market Mgr. HARTLEY ADKINS said, "BALTIMORE is one of the rare exceptions in Top 25 markets to not have a Top format. It is finally time for listeners to be able to hear all the hits in one place, and Z104.3 is the new home for those hits. Operations Manager THEA MITCHEM has put together an amazing music intensive format that BALTIMORE has asked for and we know they will love."

Talk about sloppy programming. In that 96 minute snippet, Britney (with the same song), Jay, Gaga, Drake, BEP, and Pitbull (30 minutes apart) were all played twice. I mean really, are there no other songs?

Does this mean I'm gonna have a new CHR when I come home?! Martina Mac, how well can you get the signal there?

You don't play recurrents when you launch a station. Makes sense that they play the hits frequently. On the other hand, playing Use Somebody, ever, is a crime against not just radio conventions but against humanity as a whole. But I digress...

I don't have a car but my housemate does and we listen to the radio a lot. I'm guessing this new station is like a mix between Hot 995 and 107.3? Exciting, haha.

To me the playlist looks more like a rhythmic leaning Hot 995, which makes sense for Bmore I guess.

Haha, I have always wished for a rhythmic leaning Hot 99.5, because Hot 99.5 has excellent personalities, I just wish they didn't have Pitbull I Know You Want Me in Power Rotation right now, thats so stupid!
Heres the latest playlist..
3:24 - MARIAH CAREY Obsessed 3:28 - MARIO Break Up f/Gucci Mane 3:32 - BLACK EYED PEAS I Gotta Feeling 3:36 - TREY SONGZ Say Aah f/Fabolous (WHY IS A CHR PLAYING THIS SONG?) 3:39 - DRAKE KANYE LIL WAYNE EMINEM Forever 3:45 - TIMBALAND Promiscuous f/Nelly Furtado 3:48 - LADY GAGA Paparazzi

And usually I can get much better reception in the car, at home it's sh*t. Besides I never listen to the radio at home just in the car.

That's true, but I used to live in Arlington right across the river, and 104.3 was static-y driving around.

I see too many rhythmic crossovers. This is going to be one of those stations. I have a bad feeling about that. We already have enough of those.

This station has put alot of random Urban songs into their automation (assuming its being automated)
Drake - Forever (just barely reached Top 50 CHR) Rihanna - So Hard f/ Young Jeezy (hasnt even entered any radio chart yet, but its definitely an urban song) Trey Songz - Say Aah (just broke onto Top 50 Urban, so its definitely hasnt charted on Pop yet) Mario - Break Up (peaked at 50 on CHR)
Thats a bit weird....

www.z1043.com Z-104.3 BALTIMORE-ANNAPOLIS www.z1043.com/mediaplayer/?station=WCHH-FM&action=listenlive&channel_title= 32 K AAC Major kudos to the new Z-104.3 for playing "So Hard" by Rihanna, excellent release. They are going for the jugular with this one. When Amp Radio 97.1 debuted in L.A. they were among the first in the country to play Pitbull's "I Know You Want Me". Well, Z-104.3 is also helping break a song. Also, Drake is huge right now, especially in the big markets. "Forever" is a great song and fits with the overall sound of the new Z-104.3 While I'm not a fan of such a zany amount of repetition, it is a necessary evil as the station is BRAND NEW. They're trying to get the word out, and they're deliberately spinning certain HIT records so often to get noticed. The liners also emphasize the fact that this is a hit music station in a really good way. Don't overanalyze records by their chart placement on the national CHR/Pop charts. Rather, the idea is to look at whats hot nationally, regionally and locally both on the radio, as well as Sales-wise. Then, factor in the core sound of the station, which company owns it, and whose programming it. It's no secret that Clear Channel CHRs usually lean on Rhythmic/Pop, but then again so do CBS Radio stations, and most of the major market CHRs (Q-100 Atlanta being the exception).

Uhhh wtf at the random urban songs?
Doesn't look too promising, although at least they don't appear to be ignoring any high-charting songs, and hopefully the ridiculous rotation calms down.

Drake's "Forver" is not a "random urban song". Damn, it's not like they're playing some some slow Kirk Franklin or Bebe & Cece Winans record.
"Forever" is receivng airplay at major market stations like 102.7 KIIS FM Los Angeles, 97.1 Amp Radio L.A., 103.5 Kiss FM Chicago on large market CHRs like 104.3 Now FM FM Las Vegas and Radio Now 100.9 Indianapolis, medim sized market CHRs like Hot 107.9 Syracuse, 99.3 Kiss FM and Hot 92 Harrisburg, and smaller market stations like 97.7 KRCK Palm Springs and 95.9 Kiss FM Green Bay.
Mario's "Break Up" is receiving some airplay at stations like 92.3 Now in New York, Z07.7 St. Louis, 103.7 Kiss FM Milwaukee, and Wild 102.9 Reno among others.
On the other hand, Mix 106.5 is playing some "random" Hot AC records like Uncle Cracker's "Smile" and Train's "Hey, Soul Sister".
But you know what? There are other CHRs playing those songs as well. Uncle Cracker's "Smile" is getting supprt from G-105 Raleigh, 93.7 STW Wilmington, 107.9 The Mix Salt Lake City, 95.1 KHOP Modesto-Stockton, and 107.5 The River Nashville.
101.1 WIXX is playing Keith Urban's "Kiss A Girl". It's the only CHR/Pop station on the panel playing it and yet even though the song hasn't charted in the national Top 50 it's managed to make its way to WIXX's Top 10. Keep in mind that WIXX consistently ranks at the top of the ratings both in Green Bay and in Appleton-Oshkosh.
Bottom line is this 1) Songs have to break out of somewhere. Z-104.3 chose to be among the first CHRs to play certain Rhythmic records 2) Z-104.3's competitor leans adult so it makes sense for this new younger CHR to go in the other direction. It's called differentiation. Seems to work in markets like Syracuse with 93 Q and Hot 107.9 or Grand Rapids with 104.5 WSNX and Hot 105.3.

It's called differentiation. Seems to work in markets like Syracuse with 93 Q and Hot 107.9 or Grand Rapids with 104.5 WSNX and Hot 105.3. Im well aware that CHR's can play whatever they want, and songs like Say Aah, So Hard, Break Up, and Forever are not usually played by CHR's starting off, CHR's usually go with the Top 20 songs, while those songs have more of a base on Rhythmic-Leaning CHRs. I apologize for this if it offends you, but you seem almost offended that we are surprised by this. Especially at the comment of 'random urban songs'. I personally know that Say Aah has only 5 plays on CHR period, however, that was smart for this station to play that because I am SURE some 92Q listeners (Baltimore's Urban) will be tuning in to see what this station is about, so picking that song is not a far stretch at all based on the market. However, I still think its OVERKILL to play a song within 30 minutes of each other, at a time like the beginning of the mid-afternoon, the listeners you do have are usually people with their radio on at their work desk, and most likely they won't turn the station off in 30 minutes. Yes this is a new station, but their are plenty of HOT songs to choose from in the Top 10 that listeners are familiar with. As for me, my base is Urban, I listen to Urban all the time, and I want these songs to be played, however, we have to consider that its going to be ALOT of people turning to Z104.3, because not all 25 and older adults like Hot AC music, so it seems rotating those CHR-oriented songs and rhythmic crossovers should be first priority IMO before testing the urban songs. Besides, we dont want people to turn to Z104.3 and go 'Hey, this sounds like 92Q, I dont want rap music.' Try testing songs like Throw It In The Bag or Drop It Low before going with Say Aah, it seems like a wiser choice to me because you can grant the 92Q listeners with a sense of familiarity while not throwing off the CHR listeners too much. I'm not really trying to disagree with you, I just don't want to sound like an illiterate chart follower to you who knows nothing at all about radio programming.

It's also Z104.3 trying to get some 92Q listeners. A lot of us are looking at Z as just a Mix 106.5 competitor, but in the absence of a CHR or even a CHR/Rhythmic, a lot of listeners probably turned to Urban 92Q as a substitute. A debuting CHR would be stupid to ignore those listeners. Remember that Baltimore hasn't had a real CHR since B102.7 signed off in the early 00's.
Only the Trey Songz track is really an exclusively Urban song right now, and it's one of those songs that sounds really good on the radio and probably will cross over.
(Oops... Martin Mac made a point about 92Q while I was writing this.)

Lol, I knew I wasn't the only one who knew that Z104.3 wasn't trying to get 92Q listeners. And your right about Say Aah being an exclusive Urban track, but it does have good CHR appeal, like I said, its a smart choice. Scratch out Throw It In The Bag and Drop It Low, their falling fast on all three formats, I didn't realize before, but Say Aah was the best choice.

I do agree the song scheduling was a little off. It was a bit jarring to hear a bunch of Pop songs in a row, and then 3 or 4 Urban-leaning ones, but this is their first day. They'll fix their rotations at some point.
I still don't think any of the songs were a bad choice if they weren't played right in a row. New stations need to do something to get people's attention, and I like it when they don't debut with 100% safe songs.

And hopefully with time their rotation will definitely be first. Im really interested to hear the DJ's that they pick, the DJ's on Clear Channel tend to be a bit more level-headed then some of the crazy DJ's that CBS picked (specifically speaking of the 92.3 NOW DJ's.) One thing that 92.3 NOW FM has heavily encouraged is the constant interaction of radio goers through Facebook while they listen to the station, I think this is an excellent strategy to connect with the young audience, it will definitely get your ears to stay tuned and you'll eventually be distracted and won't realize that commercials are on. I know that whenever im on Facebook, the 92.3 NOW personalities are all over Facebook, even while on-air, constantly changing their status and adding station goers, and they also offer to advertise people's facebook accounts over the air.
