Danny Gokey, second runner-up in the 8th season of American Idol, premiered his debut single this morning on FM 106.1 in hometown Milwaukee. The song was written by Lady A's Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley, and produced by Mark Bright.
The song will be available for download on iTunes December 14th. The album will be released March 2010.

Not a bad song, but his voice was kind of in the background the whole time. Maybe it was just the connection. I think his fans will like it. It was just ok/average for me.

I don't know if 'breathy' is the right word but his voice does sound unnatural throughout much of the song. I couldn't really understand the lyrics. I don't think it will do much.
Apparently, he didn't practice his twang enough.

Don't like this at all. The lyrics are pure cheese and like previously stated, his voice sounds... off.

Wow. Awful. Even the instrumentation sounds completely awful. He sounds like a poor man's Rascal Flatts. Who the hell is Bobby? There's not much in his development. Did they just try the story angle to satisfy us country fans? This is ridiculous. This is more of a Christian song than anything. I don't really understand the point of the hook either: Don't worry/It's only love (I thought I heard Jesus at one point, but I can't tell. What? ??? It appears this is where Bright's wall of sound went after disappearing from Carrie's album. I also don't understand the poor woman smiling at the well-dressed rich people. Huh? Sonically it reminds me of a overproduced Stealing Cinderella for whatever reason. Anyways, please let this fail.

This is just bad. His voice sounds disturbing, almost like he's possessed or something. I'm not sure what its trying to say lyrically either.

How horrible, I couldn't even hear him at first. I never could stand him but I wouldn't like this even if I was his biggest fan.

Oh and let me add that I appreciate the link, leilamaurizia. I wouldn't want negative reaction to a song to be misconstrued as not appreciating the post. His version of Hero was incredible on AI but he struggled with finding the right material after that. I didn't like how ugly his non-fans were to him as the show progressed. But I'm not thinking this will win too many of them over.

While I could possibly argue with the the theme chosen for a first single, if this is indeed his first single, I don't understand where people are saying he sounds unnatural or bad here. The message is something that can be called 'cheese' but it is in line with the 'message' that Danny wanted to go with.
Overproduced with a wall of sound? not to my ears. It's actually pretty subtle (except for the kick drum). You can hear the mandolin, piano and fiddle throughout the song, while Gokey sings strongly, if differently from what we heard on Idol.

I don't know how many songs they recorded to choose from for Carrie's new album, but I'd guess this was dead last in the pecking order.

I've never heard of this guy before, but I don't really see anything wrong with his voice...it seems fine on the youtube video and everything.
I haven't quite figured out the lyrics yet, but is it like a Christmas song?

I'm still trying to decipher the lyrics. Anyone understand the message?

Danny Gokey was my least favorite contestant on the show, but I like the song. It's really pretty. It's usually the case that the person I like least on Idol becomes the person who's material I like the most. I like this much more than the Allison/Kris/Adam offerings I've heard thus far. That being said, it's not something I'm going to put on repeat for hours. I probably won't even download it.
I think it's about realizing how good your life is compared to some of the world around you and not taking what you have for granted anymore. At least that's what I got out of it. I'm probably wrong.

The melody isn't good. And I actually think with the right songs, he could have a pretty successful career. But this song is just sub par, IMO.

I love Lady Antebellum, so I was shocked when I found out Dave and Charles wrote this.
The lyrics are downright terrible, IMO. Very, very cheesy. Dave and Charles are usually really good songwriters. Maybe they save their good work for themselves, lmao!
Anyways, I didn't hate or like Gokey during Idol. But when I found out he was 'going country' it made me instantly hate him. I mean the whole thing is just so fake, it's not who he is. He has no twang to his voice. Heck, he hadn't even heard of the Grand Ole Opry!!!!! WTF?!?!
He's not staying true to himself as an artist, so I hope he fails. A country record deal is all he could get so he just grabbed it for all the wrong reasons.
Concerning the song, did anyone else cringe when he sings the 'la la la la' part.
*shivers*

KT,
Outside of CCM, Gokey didn't know much about any music. So it's no surprise he didn't know the opry. Plenty of people don't know what that is.

^Exactly. How can he claim to be Country and not even know what the Opry is. That's just ridiculous.

How did Lady Antebellum write this terrible song when all their songs are great?
And his vocals are just atrocious. And he is 0% country. Don't know why he is here.

American Idol alum with a weak voice buried under the production and subpar lyrics from writers who should know better — it's Phil Stacey all over again!

I'm not sure anybody is as untalented as Phil Stacey. This guy appears to be pretty bad though, I'm sure he'll have a mediocre peaking single and a year from now no one will remember his name.
