I wanted to discuss this station for a bit. First of all, that playlist absolutely makes me puke, why is Lovegame AND Paparazzi both in power rotation, and not only that, IKYWM Pitbull is still in power?? Like wtf!?
Also, do you think this is a rhythmic-leaning station or a middle of the road CHR. And would you listen to this station?

It just sounds like a crap radio station that has no effective strategy of marketing to its listeners. It's surprising from a big city like DC.

while I can understand your frustration with that station, check these two stations 102.7 KIIS FM's "#1 HIT music station" or 97.1 KAMP top songs that they are playing. 102.7 KIIS FM is supposed to be one of the biggest radio stations in California and possibly in the USA. www.yes.com/#KIIS?chartwww.yes.com/#KAMP?chartBesides Taylor Swift and Miley cyrus, everything else is hip hop/rhythmic/urban music. I have yet to hear them play Boys like girls, Kelly Clarkson, Colbie Caillat, Owl City, The Fray, Cascada, Daughtry, and much more. Even after requesting these songs, they won't play them. I can't understand how a station can claim to be a top 40 when they won't even play songs that are in the top 20 on AT40. Honestly, I blame these stations for preventing songs like Already gone, No surprise, never say never from peaking higher since they never played them. Sorry for my rant but I can understand your frustration!

KIIS is pop, a rhythmic would never get conned into playing something as terrible as the Kings of Leon repeatedly.

I listened to this station all the time when I was in Maryland this past summer. I don't remember it being this bad though. Looking at it now they really need to get some new program directors or market researchers or somethin' cause that playlist is all types of wrong (not to mention so out of date ).

I like KIIS-FM, Amp, and Hot 99.5 as well. My favorite CHRs are the ones that can get away with playing all the hits, and are active on a lot of great new music. But you know what? I'm not the typical CHR listener, and neither are any of you if you're posting here. Your knowledge of new music and different CHRs from across the country far surpasses that of the casual listener. Say what you want about Hot 99.5 Washington there is no doubt they are doing something right - they just posted their best ratings ever with a 6.4 share. That means they rank third overall, and they also have about 1.1 million listeners. Their PD previously programmed 93.3 FLZ Tampa so you know he's very knowledgeable about the CHR format. Their morning guy Kane? He does mornings at Hot and afternoons for 93.3 FLZ Tampa. Afternoon guy Toby Knapp? Used to work at FLZ as well. Hot 99.5 is a pure CHR. I mean, how many Rhythmics do you know of that play Matt Nathanson? And yes, they do play quite a few Recurrents, b/c appearantly thats what the typical CHR listener in our nation's capital enjoys hearing. Would you rather DC not have a CHR at all, as was the case between 92-96? So let's move onto 102.7 KIIS FM Los Angeles. Back around 2003 its ratings had gone down to the mid 3 shares. The music mix was pretty broad based, but the ratings seemed to be going down while Hip Hop outlet Power 106 was dominating the ratings. KIIS-FM took a bold move and decided to shift gears and pretty much become a Rhythmic CHR. This lead to a lot of success in the ratings, but after about a year some non-Rhythmic titles made their way back to the playlist. They currently rank NUMBER ONE in L.A., up to a 5.2, with nearly 4 million listeners. If you look at yes.com you'll see that today at the noon hour they played Taylor Swift and All American Rejects. Between 1-2 they played No Doubt's "Underneath It All". Between 2-3 KIIS played both Taylor Swift, as well as Kings of Leon. They played Taylor again between 3-4 as well as the awesome new one from Leighton Meester. 3 Oh! 3 and Taylor were played the following hour. The next hour they played the Ting tings. KIIS-FM actually leans a bit less Rhythmic at night - in the 7 PM hour they played Miley, Taylor, Leighton, and KOL. KIIS-FM is one of the most successful CHRs on the planet, and the CHR/Pop stations in San Diego and San Francisco (Channel 93-3 and Movin 99.7) sound very similar to it. Seems to be working for them as Channel 93-3 is number one in the ratings in SD, and Movin 99.7 is the first CHR/Pop station in SF in decades to post a 3.1 share (and they cume over a million). Onto 97.1 Amp Radio, one of 2009's success stories. You've got this CHR that isn't even a year old, doesnt have a morning show, with a music mix very similar to KIIS (a bit more Rhythmic actually), takes chances on new music, and it's already Top 5 ratings share and Top 3 in cume. Amp does play a few non Rhythmic hits from Taylor, 3 Oh3, Miley, KOL, All American Rejects, and even Paramore on occasion. Now then, if you guys want to check out a true blue CHR/Pop station that really plays all the hits, check out Oklahoma City's heritage CHR - KJ 103. It's usually the top ranked station in town. In a typical hour you'll hear everything from Colbie Cailat's "Fallin For You" to Lil Wayne's "Got Money". Earlier today they played 30 Seconds to Marks "The Kill" into Drake's "Forever". And this is in mid-days folks, not just at night. They're already playing Orianthi's "According To You", Shinedown's "If you Only Knew", as well as Chris Brown's "I Can Transform You". Listen to KJ 103 online sometimes' www.kj103fm.comYou might also want to check out 96.5 The Mountain out of Chattanooga. They recently started streaming, they don't overplay their powers, the music mix is broad, and they're at times a bit musically adventurous with new music: www.965themountain.com/Happy listening :)

Martin, absolutely my friend, that's exactly what I'm saying.
A station cannot be too hip for the room, it cannot be light years ahead of its listeners. You think Hot 99.5 can't play more new music? They could be banging out 5000 new records. If they did that though, they'd be lucky to even get 5000 listeners. Hot 99.5 didn't just accidentally post their best ratings share ever this past month - they did it b/c the folks there know the market. Fortunately for you, as a serious CHR fan, you can also pick up the new Z-104.3 Baltimore, Mix 106.5 Baltimore, and listen to an insane amount of great CHRs via the internet.
If you'd like, I can post the full list of CHR/Pop stations from the US and Canada that stream online. I can also post a list of every CHR in Europe that stream, or in virtually every other part of the world.

I like the way you speak of CHR, you sound so well informed and you know what your talking about. You really need to be an MD yourself.

Their PD previously programmed 93.3 FLZ Tampa so you know he's very knowledgeable about the CHR format. Are you talking about Jeff Kapugi? I think he left a year or two back. The music was a lot better when he was around. It's only since he left that Hot became so recurrent-focused. Thea Mitchem is currently listed as PD and I think she handles a few other stations in the cluster as well. I mentioned in another thread that I like all the jocks- it's just that if I hear "I Know You Want Me" one more time, I'm going to be physically ill. Things would get interesting if another CHR signed on here. Kane in mornings is unstoppable, but if CBS signed on an "AMP", it could really shake up the music-focused dayparts.

Well, I listen to DC Hot 99.5 almost every day :) In the mornings, the Kane show is my jam, and then at nights. They have some good and bad things. Bad: Seriously, STOP with LoveGame!!! I like it, but I have been hearing that ish for MONTHS! I didn't realize that IKYWM was playing that frequently. I think they are trying to cater to the HUGE Latin population in DC by playing more Pitbull and some Shakira now that they have hits. Also, I have almost NEVER stopped hearing Untouched. At least once a week.
Good: Sometimes they are VERY slow at adding some songs, but at least they have a good combination of music (just TOO repetitive that seems they took eternity to reduce spins of some songs). But it's nice to hear in the same hour songs like Happy, Good Girls Gone Bad, Party In The USA, You Belong With Me, Use Somebody and Already Gone. And sometimes they push some random songs, like Chillin' or Wavin' Flag.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised my Urban 93.9 WKYS and my urban-leaning Rhythmic 955 PGC never added Chillin, they supported Wale all the way back to 2005 when he was unsigned and known by nobody out of Washington, I mean they broke his first local radio hit 'Shake It'... you would think they would be the very first station to add him.
Hot 99.5 never played his music until Chillin, but Urban's are MUCH MORE likely to spin local artists than CHR's, plus his music was probably far too Urban.

I think KYS and PGC avoided Chillin' because of Lady Gaga.
Hot did play it a few times, but I wish they had pushed it more.

I remember it peaking in the Top 20 on WIHT, so they had edged it to Moderate rotation, but it stayed in their playlist for a long time.
