This is such a weird chart. How are "No Air" and "Lips of an Angel" in the top 50, but "Beautiful" and "Toxic" are nowhere to be found?

1 PINK 2 KELLY CLARKSON 3 RIHANNA 4 NICKELBACK 5 JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE 6 THE BLACK EYED PEAS 7 BEYONCE 8 BRITNEY SPEARS 9 CHRISTINA AGUILERA 10 AVRIL LAVIGNE

i'm still baffled at no Beautiful or toxic on that list. Also no Lady Marmalade.. Wasnt Lady Marmalade #1 for 9 week son the chr/pop? Makes no sense.. It even won top 40 song at the Radio Music Awards in 2001 i remember when christina hosted.

Too many songs that came out in the past two years.
Flawed methodology.

I'm quite surprised (but, undoubtedly, relieved) that "In Da Club" didn't make the list. I figured that was a lock for the top 20, at least.

Surprised how low In the End is considering it was a year-end #1.

Also, props to Gaga for only being out in the US for the last year of the decade and placing 2 songs in the top 30. JD and PF's positions should be swapped, though.

This chart was based on Pop 100 chart that has been terminated just this year I believe. Toxic and Beautiful never made it to number one on that chart. Don't confuse it with Top40 mainstream

Don't confuse it with Top40 mainstream No, I'm pretty sure this would be for Mainstream Top 40. You couldn't do a chart encompassing the entire decade with the Pop 100 (it didn't exist until 2005). Furthermore, why would Billboard bother with a decade end tally for a defunct chart? That'd make no sense.

I believe this was a compilation of Top40 and Pop 100 which then replaced it. If it was top40 mainstream, many of the songs mentioned there wouldn't be in it.

Mainstream top 40 was never replaced by anything. The chart has existed, continuously, since October 1992. The chart has always been ranked by spins. The Pop 100 rankings combined audience impressions with digital downloads. Two completely different methodologies. I can't imagine they'd be combined in any way. Further proof of the source material is right on the web site. It says: "Decade-end hottest pop songs, ranked by mainstream top 40 radio airplay detections as measured by Nielsen BDS." i.e. Ranked by spins, therefore Mainstream Top 40. As for why the second half of the decade is favored. There are two reasons I see for this: 1) The size of the reporting panel has increased as the decade progressed. More recent years have seen a lot more 10,000+ spin chart toppers than we've seen in the early part of the decade. 2) Chart longevity. Songs are sticking around longer than they used to allowing them many more weeks to rack up spins.

I'm talking about Top40 tracks which was subsequently replaced by Pop 100 before it got defunct. But anyways, they should clarify which chart they based this list on. Although Mainstream top 40 is my assumption also, some of the songs here are just out of place edit: nevermind. It is the mainstream top 40. my apologies
