This might get locked, but I thought you guys would think this would be VERY interesting. At least it is to me...
What if there were a radio station that played music based on what's popular on iTunes at the moment. For example, today's list of songs would be based on yesterday's top 50 at around noon. Of course it would have to be CHR/Pop formatted station. So I've been fooling around with it, and I think this would be the top 50 for last Sunday (January 31).
1 - 1. Ke$ha - TiK ToK - 98 (-10) 11 - 2. Taylor Swift - Today Was a Fairytale - 95 (+32) 0 - 3. Justin Timberlake - Hallelujah - 88 (+88) 10 - 4. Black Eyed Peas - Imma Be - 86 (+21) 12 - 5. Lady Antebellum - Need You Now - 77 (+14) 16 - 6. Timbaland - Carry Out - 76 (+17) 2 - 7. Train - Hey, Soul Sister - 75 (-16) 9 - 8. Justin Bieber - Baby - 71 (+5) 3 - 9. Lady GaGa - Bad Romance - 71 (-9) 4 - 10. Young Money - BedRock - 70 (-9) 6 - 11. Ke$ha - Blah Blah Blah - 67 (-4) 5 - 12. Iyaz - Replay - 64 (-7) 15 - 13. Ludacris - How Low - 62 (+2) 8 - 14. Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling - 62 (-6) 23 - 15. Jason Derulo - In My Head - 61 (+10) 7 - 16. Owl City - Fireflies - 57 (-13) 14 - 17. Jay Sean - Do You Remember - 56 (-5) 24 - 18. Lady GaGa - Telephone - 53 (+8) 17 - 19. Rihanna - Hard - 53 (-6) 19 - 20. Kris Allen - Live Like We're Dying - 52 (-2) 20 - 21. Boys Like Girls - Two Is Better Than One - 49 (-5) 0 - 22. Sheryl Crow - Lean On Me - 48 (+48) 13 - 23. Jay-Z - Empire State of Mind - 48 (-14) 27 - 24. Adam Lambert - Whataya Want From Me - 47 (+9) 22 - 25. Orianthi - According to You - 38 (-14) 25 - 26. Miley Cyrus - Party in the U.S.A. - 36 (-8) 21 - 27. David Guetta - Sexy Chick - 36 (-17) 0 - 28. Taylor Swift - Breathless - 35 (+35) 18 - 29. Selena Gomez & The Scene - Naturally - 33 (-23) 32 - 30. Trey Songz - Say Aah - 32 (+1) 30 - 31. Snow Patrol - Set Fire to the Third Bar - 31 (-2) 26 - 32. Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway - 31 (-9) 52 - 33. LMFAO - Shots - 27 (+22) 28 - 34. Jay Sean - Down - 24 (-11) 0 - 35. Jay-Z - Stranded - 23 (+23) 33 - 36. OneRepublic - All the Right Moves - 23 (-5) 31 - 37. Lady GaGa - Paparazzi - 22 (-10) 39 - 38. Lady GaGa - Poker Face - 18 (-1) 40 - 39. New Boyz - Tie Me Down - 17 (-2) 0 - 40. Jennifer Hudson - Let It Be - 16 (+16) 45 - 41. Script - Breakeven - 15 (+1) 42 - 42. Michael Buble - Haven't Met You Yet - 14 (-4) 29 - 43. Jason Derulo - Whatcha Say - 14 (-20) 0 - 44. Christina Aguilera - Lift Me Up - 3 (+3) 0 - 56. Beyonce - Halo - 2 (+2) 0 - 57. Lupe Fiasco - I'm Beamin - 2 (+2) 44 - 58. Justin Bieber - One Less Lonely Girl - 2 (-13) 43 - 59. Ke$ha - Your Love Is My Drug - 1 (-15)
I would probably listen to this station a lot. Look how quickly songs rise and fall. Their peaks on airplay would match their peaks on digital sales as well. Which would be an added bonus for the Hot 100.

Interesting thought, but I think it'd be a terrible idea.

It's an interesting playlist, but it would automatically eliminate artists that sell albums moreso than singles.
And that much Bieber and Ke$ha is just wrong... but I guess that's a problem with CHR in general right now.

It would be nice for songs that are having great sales and almost zero airplay. For example, Gimme More and Piece Of Me. But otherwise, it would suck if you had to hear 20 different Taylor Swift/Glee Songs.

^^^It could be amended so that only the highest 2 songs from an artist are allowed

I like the idea of having a more dynamic chart where songs rise and fall fairly quickly like they do on iTunes. Overall, though, the idea wouldn't work I don't think.

I have been thinking for a while that a radio station should try a cross-format style based on the Hot 100 / iTunes / Digital charts. Personally, I would like it. Many people don't listen to radio anymore because of iPods and like music that doesn't fit neatly in a "box."

How about playing the best songs, regardless of format? In theory, the idea of this kind of station appeals to me too. Unfortunately, though, people have such different tastes that it would be difficult to come up with the right mix of songs. Stations are currently formatted in order to appeal to a certain segment of the population. For example, teens are more likely to listen to a station that plays Taylor Swift, Lady GaGa, Kris Allen, and Adam Lambert while the older population will tend to go for the Norah Jones, Celine Dion, Michael Buble stations. I feel like a station that played a little bit of everything would fail to please anyone and no one would listen.

I was very surprised to hear that american radio stations are formatted. Here in Slovenia all radio stations play all kinds of music. Not only that, they don't play the same song 10 or more times a day. More variety.

Isn't playing "the best songs, regardless of format" exactly what Top 40 radio should be? Right now it's a mixture of HAC/Rhythmic and some pure Pop, but not too long ago there was plenty of Alternative on Top 40 radio as well.
