Jewel taps technology in pre-release video concert By RYAN NAKASHIMA (AP) – 20 hours ago LOS ANGELES — Album release parties were once a way to generate buzz and boost sales of new music. These days, they may be one of the few moneymaking opportunities left for the music business. Jewel is selling tickets to a live video relay of a performance scheduled for Monday in which she will play songs from her new album, "Sweet and Wild." Fifty U.S. venues, such as Morton's steakhouses and private clubs owned by ClubCorp, are participating, along with theaters in Australia. Free, illegal copies of Jewel's new songs figure to hit the Internet soon after her album's June 8 release. But organizers of Monday's event are betting her loyal fans will pay $42.50 to be among the first to hear her new album in its entirety before it goes on sale. Or for $92.50 they can have dinner included. Signed CDs are also being sold for $7.50 online and at the events. "A Jewel fan trusts Jewel," said Scott Borchetta, CEO of her label, The Valory Music Co. "They trust that she's going to give them a great record." Velocity Broadcasting, a company that sets up live, high-definition video presentations for business clients, is putting on the event. Twenty cameras will track the pop/country artist onstage and backstage during the event, which will be shot at a studio in Pittsburgh and transmitted via satellite. Velocity CEO Philip Elias said the event is a good way to promote album sales by giving ticket-buyers a unique experience. Fans in different locations will also have electronic handsets that will allow them to play trivia games and influence the songs Jewel plays. Some will be able to ask questions to the artist directly. The system, called First Spin, gives artists a way to showcase a body of work rather than just one song, he said. "When you listen to one song on the radio and have the ability to download one song, it makes the artist kind of disposable," Elias said. "First Spin is designed to get to the body of work." Pre-sales of the signed CD topped 5,000 about 10 days before the event, and about 90 percent of those buying a ticket online have elected to buy the album. www.VelocityBoxOffice.com--- In other news, "Sweet and Wild" debuts this week on the country charts at #64. I guess some physical copies are out or something. And her Starlight Café Tour continues this June. If anyone can go I surely recommend it! Jewel is recording each concert and selling it right after it's over, so you can take home the show you just heard! Aw, I really wish the one in my area wasn't at a private "by invitation only" club; I don't understand why they did that.

I really like Jewel, have always love her voice, not so sure I like the country route she's taken as much as I liked her earlier stuff. I will, however, probably buy this album, or at least select tracks. She looks great. It's hard to believe that I have been listening to her for 15 years. Makes me feel old.

Can't wait to listen to the rest! I decided to not listen to the leak (except Satisfied), so it'll all be new to me. I don't imagine it being very successful commercially, but I hope it's more of the same Jewel that I've enjoyed over the years, regardless of genre.

Just picked up my copy of the deluxe at Best Buy. I like the standard edition cover better.

Got the deluxe CD in the mail today (too bad it looks like someone ran over it with a truck); I strongly prefer the Sweet and Mild demos over the actual album. I wish she'd hurry up and make that indie acoustic CD she's been planning.
Overall, though it's not too bad, lyrically it's still my least favorite Jewel album.

I saw the video for Satisfied over the weekend. I really like the video and the song. Personally, I think that's Jewel's best vocal in awhile. She did more straight up singing rather than that yoddling that she almost turns to. I can't describe it but I think you guys probably know what I'm talking about. That aspect of her voice has really turned me off of her music lately. The same can be said of all those crazy vocal runs that Christina A. does.

I have been a Jewel fan since her debut. I am so happy that she has been in the business making albums since then. I even got my mother into her, LOL. I have only heard the clips from this but I am really excited to hear the whole thing.

Now that I've spent some QT with the album, I'd say my favorites are Ten, Bad As It Gets, and I Love You Forever. I think they'd all make solid singles; I doubt she's gonna get a breakthrough hit though. It's sad, but true with most of Jewel's discography. She's been criminally under-rated since that first album. The second and third had her wandering a bit too far from a mainstream sound, but overall, she's got such a fantastic catalog.

It seems Valory is researching for a new Jewel single and this time they are asking the fans their opinions. There is a poll at poll.fm/21o4x or www.thevalorymusicco.com/index.cfm?id=6 where u can vote for the song u wanna hear on the radio. There's 3 options only: Satisfied (the current single), Ten and One True Thing. IMO, Ten is the only radio-ready song on the album and I can't believe it hasn't been released yet. So go and vote!

Is it me or has the country demographic not been very receptive to her singles? I know she went top-15 in the beginning but now her country career seems to have stalled.
Also, Bad As It Gets is totally a single in waiting!

She should do a Pop/Folk/AC album, or atleast go back in that lane. I think that will do her some good. I don't understand why she isn't being accepted in the genre of country, or better yet why it's kind of difficult for her to break there.

I don't understand why she isn't being accepted in the genre of country, or better yet why it's kind of difficult for her to break there. Well, part of that is due to the fact that she's a woman, and it's seemingly near-impossible for women to break through. I also think the country community probably doesn't want to embrace a former pop star doing country now, regardless of her background and back catalog.

The song The Shape of You that she sang at the Emmys was beautiful and very heartfelt.

Yes but i think she's see atleast a little more success than she is now, i mean since she's went country her albums have stalled.

The Sweet and Mild versions of the album are SOO superior to the Sweet and Wild ones. I am so glad I bought the deluxe edition. The acoustic versions reminded me why I fell in love with Jewel in the first place. GORGEOUS.

I think it's because the songs themselves aren't interesting. Jewel doesn't really have her own place in country. I used to say that I think she should do a country record back when This Way was first released because of it's country influences but then when she did, it sounded kind of stale and uninspired. I bought both of her country records hoping to find a gem but I find them very uninteresting. She needs to try to do something old-country. Maybe bring in some Emmylou or Patty and make her stuff more folky again or try with some bluegrass influences. This stuff is just boring.

Yup i agree Max, she's a nice person, but can sometimes be kinda dull. She needs something spunky but still her, i mean she has some good songs on the album, but they just aren't sticking for some reason on the charts.

I think both of her country albums are really good. Sweet and Wild is a step above Perfectly Clear for me, although it has my favorite song "I Do" on it. That song is a masterpiece, should've been a hit.
