Effective the week of April 12, 2010, MEDIABASE has modified its recurrent rules. On the Top 40, Rhythmic, Urban, Active Rock, and Alternative charts, downtrending songs below #15 are now removed after 20 weeks
did y'all notice this?

zomg I didn't see this coming.
If that's the case, why isn't Gold Guns Girls going recurrent?

I don't think this rule will really make a huge difference, but I approve of it.

Yeah, we noticed. It's more of an acceptance of asinine radio trends than anything. All it's really done is reduced the noteworthiness of the 'Top 50 Hit' to next to nothing. It's not like we're hearing "The Feel Good Drag" less now.

Oh well, I don't know if most formats should be considered having 50 relevant songs anymore since you barely have to have any airplay to get there anymore.
I wouldn't be surprised if many of the charts started to shrink, seeing as there is a refusal to play new songs.

Sounds like this change will cause songs to be removed much earlier. I guess we'll only see if this rule removes songs prematurely when a song is removed one week then re-added the next week because it hits number 15 again.
Is Billboard also adopting this change?
Finally, a request for Nick, can you update your program to predict the number of weeks on the chart for all those recent hits that were on the chart > 40 weeks? Thanks!

I think Billboard already does something similar. "Panic Switch" fell off months before it fell off the Mediabase alternative chart.
Personally I don't mind the new rule. It allows newer music to get into the lower part of the chart.

It allows newer music to get into the lower part of the chart. Yeah, I noticed this on Billboard too. It's been happening for a few months actually. I first noticed it when "Jars" went recurrent from #12, and since then it's been happening regularly. I also like how it lets new songs enter the bottom of the chart.

I guess I don't understand the question here. What I did earlier was I looked at my manually typed up versions of the charts over the years, looking for any song that had accumulated over 40 weeks that was still in the Top 20 and followed it to its recurrent conclusion. Since the new 20/15 rule a few weeks back, so far I have been keeping track of the newly recurrent songs that would still be charting under the old 20/20 rule and inserting where they "should" be in a gray text. What info would you like?

u know, since "Dragonfly" has a negative number, it's likely it'll go recurrent cuz it's been on the chart for like 26 weeks
