The new single from Jewel's new album "Sweet and Wild", to be released on June 8, is the last song on the CD, "Satisfied". It goes for adds on May 17.
Is this the one to break Jewel at the country format? I doubt it, but it's a beautiful song with a good message that Jewel wants people to hear, so she decided to go with it as next single, rather than going upbeat with a catchier single. If she were Miranda Lambert now, I believe she could find success much like The House that Built Me, but we all know she's not.
A capella version:
Lyrics:
IF YOU LOVE SOMEBODY
YOU BETTER LET IT OUT
DON’T HOLD IT BACK
WHILE YOU’Re TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT
DON’T BE TIMID
DON’T BE AFRAID TO HURT
RUN TOWARD THE FLAME
RUN TOWARD THE FIRE
HOLD ON FOR ALL YOUR WORTH
THE ONLY REAL PAIN A HEART CAN EVER KNOW
IS THE SORROW OF REGRET
WHEN YOU DON’T LET YOUR FEELINGS SHOW
CHORUS
SO DID YOU SAY IT
DID YOU MEAN IT
DID YOU LAY IT ON THE LINE
DID YOU MAKE IT COUNT
DID YOU LOOK ‘EM IN THE EYE
DID THEY FEEL IT
DID YOU SAY IT IN TIME
DID YOU SAY IT OUT LOUD
‘CAUSE IF YOU DID, HUN
THEN YOU LIVED SOME
THAT FEELING INSIDE
IS CALLED SATISFIED
BUSY PEOPLE WALKING BY
CAN’T HELP BUT WORRY SOME
WITH SO MANY THINGS TO DO
SO LITTLE LOVE GETS DONE
EMPTY HEARTS EVERYWHERE
DROWNING BUT DYING OF THIRST
IF YOU WANT LOVE
IT’S NOT THAT TOUGH
START BY GIVING IT FIRST
IT’S SO EASY TO GIVE
BABY CAN’T YOU SEE
JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES OPEN YOUR HEART
AND DO WHAT COMES NATURALLY
CHROUS
WELL DID YOU SAY IT
DID YOU MEAN IT
DID YOU LAY IT ON THE LINE
DID YOU MAKE IT COUNT
DID YOU LOOK ‘EM IN THE EYE
DID THEY FEEL IT
DID YOU SAY IT IN TIME
DID YOU SAY IT OUT LOUD
'CAUSE IF YOU DID, HUN
THEN YOU LIVED SOME
THAT FEELING INSIDE
IS CALLED SATISFIED
BRIDGE
HORSES ARE BUILT TO RUN
THE SUN IS MEANT TO SHINE ABOVE
FLOWERS ARE MADE TO BLOOM
AND THEN THERE’S US
WE WERE BORN TO LOVE
REPEAT CHORUS

The lyrics aren't bad most of the way through, but just a bit overstated. A little bit. Is there anybody over the age of 12 who believes that "the only real pain a heart can know is the sorrow of regret when you don't let your feelings show?" OK, so when your husband or wife dies, that isn't real pain, I guess. That's just fake pain.
I guess the world won't end if we have some silly lyrics from a #35 song (unless the melody is really, really, really good).

Hm, those lyrics are preachy, naive, redundant, and above all, unimaginative. I wish she would snap out of this backward creative maturity she's been displaying lately. Such a shame, because she used to be intriguing.

Lyrics don't sound super original, but they are ones that people will relate to, I think. Anyway, I just can't get into Jewel and her music. But I will listen to this, though I'm gonna wait til the single version is out to listen to that. I've got a feeling this will be better than "Stay Here Forever", but that wouldn't take a whole lot...

There's a clip of the song at around 4:25 of her USTREAM video. I wish she would snap out of this backward creative maturity she's been displaying lately. Such a shame, because she used to be intriguing. I completely agree. I still love her, and hope she re-finds success, but she doesn't inspire me anymore and more often I don't find myself connecting with her music. I miss the poetry of her lyrics.

OK, so when your husband or wife dies, that isn't real pain, I guess. That's just fake pain. I don't think that's what the song says. When a person you love dies, of course it's gonna hurt, but I believe what she means is that you have to let the other know you love them (did you look them in the eye/did they feel it) - that way, even if the other person is gone you will have said and expressed what you really feel about him/her and she will have died knowing it all. It happens quite a bit - this feeling. When my grandfather died, I felt the regret of not saying I loved him. I've been wanting to say that for a long time, but I just never did, and kept postponing visits until he was gone. The pain of regret is worse than losing him, cause it was my fault, I did nothing. Knowing he knew what I felt for him would have "satisfied" me, you know? Maybe the lyrics don't come across to you as that, but it did touch me very deeply and I would really like to see it become a hit, cause it has a lot of truth in it IMO.

^No, she's still on Big Machine, but they're still too busy milking the Taylor Swift cash cow to realize that she's not the only artist on the label.

Jewel said on her chat yesterday that if Satisfied doesn't do well, than no more singles for her :( I guess that's why she wanted to release this song, which is one she is really fond of and wants people to hear, cause it may be her last one... Let's wait and see and hope for the best. She also said she's making a video for "No Good In Goodbye", track #1 on the CD, just for the fans. People who have already heard the album say it's one of the highlights and that the CD is more on the Wild side than on the Sweet. I really hope she releases at least one Wild song...
EDIT: I actually listened to the chat now, at USTREAM, and she explains it pretty well how they came to Satisfied as a single. She said they tested 6 songs and the one that responded better was Satisfied. She said she's worried to release a ballad in the summer, she was thinking of going with No Good In Goodbye, but the tests were surprising and they decided to take a chance on it. Let's wait and see....

The proper song is much better than the a capella version (though I find it charming). Sadly, I don't get the feeling this will be successful... Please prove me wrong, Jewel! I like that she's sticking with country.

I can't see this song doing well, but I hope I'm wrong. I don't love it by any means, but I would like country radio to embrace Jewel.

I want to root for Jewel, but sadly I think everything she's released since her debut country album era has been mediocre, to say the least.
"Satisfied" may not be atrocious like "Stay Here Forever" was, but it's still devoid of almost everything that made Jewel an exciting, individualistic spirit on the airwaves from the 1990's onward. Some here can say what they will about the "0304" era, but I happen to have liked that era overall in that, lyrically and thematically, she was being true to herself in spite of her striking experimentation with much more heavily-produced music.
At least I hope to hear more songs in the vein of "Stronger Woman" from her. Sadly, what may be her last single here is another forgettable misfire in my view. I'm not projecting schadenfreude on the artist herself, I'm simply stating my honest opinion on this single, and if it takes making this song a hit to keep her career alive, I can certainly sympathize with that sense of urgency........but it doesn't make it any more deserving of being a hit.

It'd be so much more entertaining, had she pronounced the song title the same way that Clarence Carter did in his classic hit Strokin': "Sas-ified". That'd be a hit!

I think this will be a pretty good song for her. I have already watched the video on CMT and the song is amazing.

I kind of like this song. I don't really understand why country radio won't play her. She is a big star and well respected, so I had hoped they would give her a chance.

Well she was a big star of another genre and she transitioned over to country.

This song is pleasant enough, but it's not anything spectacular. I miss the Jewel that gave us You Were Meant For Me and Hands.

She's trying too hard to emulate Swift, and failing miserably.

That wasn't a well-composed video; the lighting made her look orange and harsh. And why does she look like she's singing a dirge in that video? It's not exactly a funerary-type song.

There wasn't much to the video and I think they could have done a lot more with it to try and help the song. She needs to advertise this song and her upcoming album.

She's trying too hard to emulate Swift, and failing miserably. Even though you can hear similarities to the cadences that Swift uses, I highly doubt that Jewel purposely tried to be like Taylor Swift. Let's not forget, she is Jewel - she can sing and has had massive success. She doesn't need to be like anyone else.

^She's had some success, I don't know about massive. She could never really keep it going for long periods of time. But yes, she's had success...but she won't with this! Just gave this a first listen...worse than I expected, not quite as obnoxious as "Stay Here Forever", but this single's sure-flop will show everyone that Jewel doesn't belong in the country scene. She will never have success like Carrie, Miranda, Taylor, or even Martina or Reba. I see this song charting at least, but struggling to crack top 40, mabye a peak in the 39-42 range. It lacks originality, and I don't find her voice to be suited for this song either...add to that that it's summer, and this song just doesn't match up well with what else is out there...

^She's had some success, I don't know about massive. I don't know that I'd consider (almost?) 19 million in US sales only "some success;" at her peak, she wasn't really that dissimilar from Taylor Swift come to think of it. (She even had similar critiques of her vocals, if I remember correctly.) That said, she definitely hasn't lived up to her earlier success in the longterm. The problem I think with her current trajectory (and highlighted in this song) is that she seems to be writing songs based on what she thinks other people want to hear and what is the "right" way to write a song. She's almost said as much on her USTREAM chat; she also seems to view her earlier songs as almost quaint and the new songs as more evolved. But her earlier inexperience and rawness is what connected her to people in the first place -- not that she shouldn't grow or change it up, but listening to her now compared to back then there's such a disconnect it's almost like listening to two different artists. I think she has a chance at country, but I don't think she'll find success in conforming to (a misguided impression of) what people want to hear from her, and not with a watered-down Hands Part II.

I suppose those are good sales numbers, but people don't buy albums as much anymore. Her debut album was huge, I agree, but after that she tailed off rapidly in sales and lost favor with fans and critics alike, so that's why I wouldn't define her success as massive. I'd say George Strait, Garth Brooks, and Shania Twain were among many to have massive success; and at the same time, Carrie and Taylor probably not in that category yet, but closer than Jewel. I'd like to think that if Carrie and Taylor had albums out back in the 90's, they could've sold albums at rates as high as Garth and Shania did, but I guess we'll never know. Things have changed so much in 15 years! Jewel never established herself in country though, so why should they take to her now, especially if she's releasing material that's less than mediocre?
