We all know Rihanna Fenty has been working on this new album for months now and its expected to drop at the end of the year. Its said to be a return to her pop roots after taking the time to craft the very dark, personal and emotional masterpiece Rated R.
Producers on Rihanna's new Album
SEAN GARRETT
After her more morose turn on her 2009 release, Rated R, Rihanna has promised that her follow-up disc will be "more energetic." And hitmaking producer and songwriter Sean Garrett is one of the people helping to spruce up Rihanna's edgier sound.
"I got a record on Rihanna's new album," Garrett tells Rapup.com. "She's got some surprises. The record I gave her was very, very positive, very big. It's a f---ing smash."
The track, he says, is "a humongous radio record," more in tune with her previous releases like "Umbrella" and even her latest single, "Rude Boy." "It's just so infectious. It's about getting past any drama and just being happy to be alive," he explained. "It's an encouraging record. It feels great, and it's got great tempo. I made sure that it was bulletproof.
"It should be a single unless something crazy happens," he continued. "It's hot as f---. I think it's a record that's gonna stay on the radio for a long time."
Garrett, like some fans and critics, was surprised about the dark material on Rated R. — and not in a good way. "Whenever I think of Rihanna, it makes me happy. To be honest, I wasn't really that excited about hearing her in a dark zone," he said. "I love Rihanna for being that girl. ... She's like the lil' fantasy chick — nice brown skin, beautiful woman with a Caribbean swagger that's ridiculous." [/i]
ALEX DA KID
After the success of her collaboration with Eminem, Rihanna’s label is calling up the producer behind the No. 1 record to cook up another hit for her next album.
Alex Da Kid, who produced Rihanna’s duet with Eminem, “Love the Way You Lie,” tells Billboard that Island Def Jam is hungry for another smash for their star’s new album. “We worked together about a year before ‘Love the Way You Lie’ in London, and obviously that song has helped the people around her and her label say, ‘Oh, that’s a big hit, we want another one,’” says the Londoner. “You know how the music industry is.”
The in-demand hitmaker, who’s recently been in the studio with Avril Lavigne, describes RiRi’s new music as a combination of her past work. “I’d say it’s like a mixture of her two sides. It’s commercial, but at the same time it’s got an edge to it—it has substance.”
JustJared caught up with Rihanna after her Madison Square Garden show last week where she told him that the project will be “strong, fun, and sassy.”
Creating a record to top the success of Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” is a challenge Alex Da Kid is willing to take on. The 26-year-old producer has been crafting beats for the Bajan singer’s’ forthcoming album.
Rihanna may be in the early stages of recording her fifth opus, but she’s already calling on Alex to craft records to her liking. In the past, the London native made beats specifically thinking about the pop star’s tastes. “When I first started working with [Rihanna], I was doing that,” reveals Alex, who produced “Love the Way You Lie,” her collaboration with Eminem.
As time progressed, the “Airplanes” producer took a more organic approach. “I don’t try to directly mold to her ’cause you never really know what she’s thinking,” he tells Rap-Up.com. “She wants input from other people . She doesn’t always want to come up with the ideas. She wants talented people to help come up with ideas. I just do what feels natural.”
Alex has teamed up with Rihanna on several records, none of which he can name nor describe yet. “We’ve done a couple,” he admits. “We’ve got a few good ones that will probably end up on the album.”
When brainstorming ideas to make a beat, Alex’s approach is rather simple. “[Artists] never want to do something like their last album; they want to do something fresh and new,” he states. “I just do whatever I feel like is a hot song.”
