I agree...I don't think Mariah needs to do AI at all, unless she really felt she wanted "regular hours" which seems impossible for her anyhow.

Jennifer Lopez is now official for American Idol so that would basically rule Mariah out. Good. It might be a step up for Jennifer but it would be a step down for Mariah Yeah, I'm glad. I didn't want her to get that job.

I think with the release of this Christmas album her other Xmas album will probably pass Celine's album as the 2nd Best Selling Christmas Album of all-time. They're like 70,000 copies apart or something like that.
What do you guys think the song covers on the this new album will be? I'll be cool if she take on Ave Maria, it could be so epic if done right. I've never heard her sing that before.

I thought the gap had lessened last year ??? I'm not really sure, hence why I said "or something like that" I love both of these ladies but I would love for Mariah to take that spot.

According to Paul Grein's Chart Watch article at the end of last Christmas season...
"Josh Groban's Noel tops the 5 million mark this week. It's the fourth holiday album to reach that threshold, following Kenny G's Miracles-The Holiday Album (7,215,000), Celine Dion's These Are Special Times (5,123,000) and Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas (5,048,000)."
So that's a difference of 75,000 copies. However, I imagine both albums have fairly significant sales from music clubs so hard to say the exact totals. Very impressive for both ladies either way. I imagine Mariah's album will eventually pass Celine's because she did outsell her this past year and obviously AIWFCIY is a holiday staple and will probably remain so for years to come whereas Celine doesn't have a huge recurrent hit from her album.
I can't believe we're getting new Mariah music in less than 7 weeks! This lady just doesn't stop!

I didn't like the fact that Celine and Sony initially marketed that album with a 'commercial' single.

I loved it (even more so that it propelled the album to sell over five million copies). Well, actually, I think the album would have sold just as well without "I'm Your Angel". Celine was coming off of a blockbuster album/era (really the height of her popularity), had a hugely successful CBS special, and was the perfect type of artist to release a Christmas album (one who appealed to older/adult audiences).
The "battle" for the best-selling female Christmas album is quite interesting. Both Merry Christmas and These Are Special Times tend to rise and fall together during the Christmas season (with very little difference, sales wise, between the two). Given Celine is 75k ahead, it'll be quite a while before Mariah takes the title, but I believe she can eventually (especially considering, as someone pointed out before, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" surges up the charts every year).

Yes, I agree. Currently AIWFCIY is #2 on Itunes Holiday Singles chart. It's usually in the Top 10 all year around. Amazing. And her album is currently at #32 on the Holiday Albums Chart on Itunes, while Celine is not in the Top 100. Mariah's album usually stays in the Top 60 throughout the year.

while Celine is not in the Top 100. Yeah, I'd say the majority of "These Are Special Times" purchases are made in stores (as opposed to digital purchases). I can't imagine Celine has a big (or any) following with the iTunes crowd. lol

I think MC has outsold ...Special Times each holiday season since 2005. The gap was 100,000+ between them before TEOM came out. So it's taken five years to close the gap by 25,000. I'm going from memory though, so I might be off.

Suddenly I've found myself obsessively viewing performances/interviews from 98-02 again. Most might consider this a lull period (in regard to quality output), but the videos prove to be entertaining (and I was one of the few who freakin loved her look in 01 & 02).

Actually, Celine pushed ahead when they re-released her album in 2007.

Actually, Celine pushed ahead when they re-released her album in 2007. That seems to be inaccurate (as the re-release sold next to nothing). Source?

What are club sales? I'm glad she's not on AI. Obviously she can't be if she's pregnant and will give a birth during the show. Plus, it's shows 10th season and it's without Simon so I guess ratings can only fall dawn. And I don't think Mariah would be good as judge, she couldn't say that someone sucks. Now that Jlo is on AI I guess mariah won't perform there Obviously, AI is over now that flop woman is coming to them.

From the early to late 90's, customers in the US could join these "music clubs" where they would be able to buy albums at a really cheap price (sometimes even free) as long as they promised to buy a number of albums at regular price over a few years period. The biggest clubs where Colombia House and BMG. All you needed was a credit card. At their peak in the mid 90's, they accounted for over 15% of all CD sales. These clubs were extremely popular as it enabled people to get full albums for next to nothing. You have to imagine that this was before you could download free music from the internet so this was the cheapest way to get music back then. Artists popular in the 90's then sold millions of albums through those record club deals but those sales were never counted by Billboard or Soundscan. Every few years or so, those record clubs published sales and unit charts for all albums they "sold". Generally speaking, Mariah had at least another 500K - 2 million more sold, per most of her 90's albums, through these record clubs that are not included in Soundscan units. These sales are often used to explain the gap between her RIAA shipments and Soundscan numbers.. Record clubs were pretty muched killed by the advent of Napster and other free download sites in the late 90's. That and because they would also make ridiculous charges on your credit card if you didn't hold up your end of the bargain to purchase regular priced CDs. I.e. You automatically get charged for each month's special album at full price unless you decline that offer by mail or online.

Like "Memoirs", it seems like "Merry Christmas" has been cheated out of a few ten thousands Itunes sales that were counted for "Silent Night" last year. So the gap between her and Céline should be smaller.

Did Mariah seriously want to be on AI? I know that there were rumors of her being interested but I never got a sense of eagerness for the position from her. It felt like she was entertaining the idea whereas J.Lo was actively seeking it and putting in a great deal of effort to get a good deal.
Glad Mariah isn't though. I seriously can't understand why people want to join this sinking ship so badly. The minute X-factor comes, especially since Simon's going to be on there, AI will be over.

Now her Xmas album(the original one, obviously) is #9 on Itunes Top Holiday Albums chart, yesterday it was #32. That's odd.

^The past few weeks it's been doing that. I think last week it was in the top 10, and then fell down to the low 30s and now it's back in the top 10. Don't be surprised by tomorrow it's back down to the low 30 range.
