Now we all know there are people out there who question the legitimacy of Mariah Carey's 18 #1 singles because some shrewd chart strategy was employed to ensure some of those songs got to #1 -- songs like "Honey," "My All," "Thank God I Found You," "Heartbreaker," and "Touch My Body." I'm just wondering if people see any comparison between these two accomplishments/tactics? Geez, It amazes me how some people always try to diminish her accomplishments. Legitimacy? Do you even know the meaning of the word? She didin't do anything forbidden or break any laws, she was allowed to sell at a lower price and so she did it with Loverboy and maybe some other singles. And there's nothing illegitimate, anyone could've done it and it was according to laws and rules. About TMB - she released it a month and half after it was premiered and a month after adds date. So we're talking about 4 weeks, roughly. And what's the problem with that? It's usual tactics to do in almost every country. You premiere the single, wait for radio to start playing it, do a promotion and then release it. That's how it was done few years ago before TMB was released and that's how it's done right now in UK. Big acts, like Mariah is in USA, such as Robbie Willims, Take That and now Cheryl Cole do not release their singles a month before it was premiered.

^^ Not especially high. I'd say Far East Movement almost definitely has it. Back to December debuts at #1 on Digital Songs with 244,000. Top 5 Hot 100 Debut?

Via Billboard -
"Over on the Digital Songs chart, Taylor Swift's "Back to December" arrives at No. 1 with 241,000. It's the third pre-release single from her "Speak Now" album, which drops next Monday (Oct. 25). One more track, "Mean," was issued on Oct. 19, so expect another Swift debut on Digital Songs next week. "Back to December" bumps Far*East Movement's "Like a G6" down to No. 2 with 223,000 (but with a 1% gain). Meanwhile, P!nk's "Raise Your Glass" celebrates a 59-6 second-week leap (129,000; up 392%)."

Bruno Mars Leads 'The Way' To Pop Songs Summit
MARS STARS: After eight lead males had ruled Billboard's Nielsen BDS-based Pop Songs radio airplay chart in their first chart visits between the list's launch in 1992 and 2008, six have now reigned in the last year.
Bruno Mars continues the format's rookie male domination, as "Just the Way You Are," his debut chart entry as a lead artist, ascends 2-1. (All charts will be refreshed tomorrow (Oct. 21) on Billboard.com). Mars accompanied B.o.B, the year's first new male artist to lead the list, on "Nothin' on You," which topped the May 22 chart. The following week, Taio Cruz began a three-week command with "Break Your Heart."
A year ago this week, Jay Sean wrapped a three-week stay at the Pop Songs summit with "Down," featuring Lil Wayne. Before the end of 2009, fellow newcomers Jason Derulo ("Whatcha Say") and Iyaz ("Replay") perched at No. 1 with their debut chart entries.
Here is a recap of the 14 male soloists to top Pop Songs with their introductory chart titles as lead acts:
Year, Artist, Title 2010, Bruno Mars, "Just the Way You Are" 2010, Taio Cruz (featuring Ludacris), "Break Your Heart" 2010, B.o.B (featuring Bruno Mars), "Nothin' on You" 2009, Iyaz, "Replay" 2009, Jason Derulo, "Whatcha Say" 2009, Jay Sean (featuring Lil Wayne), "Down" 2008, Flo Rida, "Low" 2006, Ne-Yo, "So Sick" 2005, Chris Brown, "Run It!" 2005, Gavin DeGraw, "I Don't Want to Be" 2000, Lou Bega, "Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit Of ...)" 1999, Ricky Martin, "Livin' La Vida Loca" 1998, Eagle Eye Cherry, "Save Tonight" 1998, Shawn Mullins, "Lullaby"
"Just the Way You Are" concurrently bounds 15-10 on Adult Pop Songs. Mars is the fourth male soloist to reach the chart's top 10 with a first charted title as a lead act this year, following Kris Allen ("Live Like We're Dying," No. 3), Adam Lambert ("Whataya Want From Me," No. 2) and Mike Posner ("Cooler Than Me," No. 6). Prior to the quartet, no male artist had reached the Adult Pop Songs top 10 with a maiden chart entry since Gavin Rossdale rose to No. 2 in October 2008 with "Love Remains the Same."
'TEENAGE' LOVE AFFAIR: Bruno Mars' coronation on Pop Songs dislodges Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" from No. 1 after four weeks. Perry enjoys greater fortunes on Adult Pop Songs, where "Teenage Dream" rises 3-1.
The advance grants Perry her third Adult Pop Songs topper, following "California Gurls" (nine weeks beginning in July) and "Hot N Cold" (four weeks, 2008-09). With three No. 1s, Perry ties P!nk for most leaders among women in the chart's 14-year history.
Speaking of P!nk ...
BUBBLING OVER: ... the artist born Alecia Moore could soon reclaim solo ownership of most Adult Pop Songs No. 1s among female artists, as "Raise Your Glass" roars 34-19 as the list's Greatest Gainer.
On Pop Songs, the track charges 34-17, also with Greatest Gainer honors. Up 2,281 plays, "Raise Your Glass" logs the format's greatest weekly increase since Eminem's "Just Lose It" improved by 2,740 plays on the Oct. 9, 2004, chart.
Since 2000, only two other titles have registered loftier one-week gains: 'N Sync's "Pop" (up 2,784, June 2, 2001) and Janet Jackson's "All for You" (up 2,353, March 17, 2001).
"Raise Your Glass" introduces P!nk's "Greatest Hits…So Far!!!," due Nov. 16.

And also, if you've paid attention to this board the past few years, you know I'm a Mariah fan. I'm simply raising the point that people have doubts, without getting all emotional about it.

in regards to the discussion about MC's and Swift's chart accomplishments, we cannot deny that people already have and will always have opinions about their achievements. But speaking from a purely objective perspective, having 18 number ones or the most top tens is an incredible accomplishment that is hardly achievable by merely relying upon label tactics. "Touch My Body" may have gotten to number 1 because its iTunes release was held back, but it had generated so many spins on radio within a month of its radio premiere, which is largely attributed to her stardom and the positive reception the song had received from the public. The song had reached number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week before its digital release on just airplay, something incredible indeed. Now to repeat that journey to the top 17 times before is incredible that no one has been able to repeat. Thus if her success was attributed largely to label tactics, than one would expect to see the results easily repeatable with another artist.
The same with Taylor Swift. Releasing new singles on a weekly basis does not delegitimize the fact that these songs or the artist are so popular that they have the ability to generate so much in sales and achieve so much chart success. Each generation has had different chart dynamics that have favored some artists or genres over others and there is no way to correct for that or standardize the chart such that we could compare which number 1s are more legitimate or worthy than others.
I do have my opinions about Glee, however, just because I feel that they have a platform that puts them in a more favorable position than other musicians, but like I said before, I don't think we can delegitimize their success b/c they are popular as well and bottom line, all the billboard charts really measure is the popularity of any track or album for a given week.

new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/67706/week-ending-oct-17-2010-1-and-behind-bars/;_ylt=ApaAPUwK_fj0HZMg.SBEwFYPwiUv Taylor Swift's "Back To December" enters Hot Digital Songs at #1, with first-week sales of 242,000 copies. It's Swift's third #1 on this chart so far this year. "Today Was A Fairytale" debuted at #1 in January. "Mine" debuted at #1 in August. Swift is the first artist to top the digital chart three times in 2010. Eminem, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Rihanna and will.i.am have each done it twice (combining lead and featured credits). The last artist to land three #1 digital hits in a calendar year was Lady Gaga last year. "Mine" and "Back To December" will appear on Swift's Speak Now album, which will be released next week (and will chart in two weeks). Another Swift song, "Mean," was released yesterday and will undoubtedly debut high on next week's chart. Could it become Swift's fourth #1 digital hit of 2010? Stay tuned. "Like A G6" by Far*East Movement featuring The Cataracs & Dev dips to #2 on Hot Digital Songs. The song sold 223,000 downloads this week, bringing its 17-week total to 1,397,000. The Asian-American act's album, Free Wired, enters the Billboard 200 this week at a mediocre #24. It sold just 17,000 copies. (That's two items in a row about acts with massive singles and modest-selling albums. Yikes). Thirteen songs from Glee are listed on Hot Digital Songs, topped by a version of "Lucky" by Chord Overstreet and Dianna Agron which debuts at #13. The original version by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat re-enters the chart at #75. It has sold 1,642,000 copies to date. It won a Grammy in February as Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. Shameless Plug: The Glee version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" tops the 1 million mark in paid downloads this week. It's the first Glee recording to reach that plateau. On Friday, I'll have a Chart Watch Extra in which I count down the top 20 Glee songs with the most paid downloads. Gleeks of the world, let your Gleek flag fly. Check it out on Friday. Here's the rest of the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs. Nelly's "Just A Dream" rebounds from #5 to #3 (170K). Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are" dips from #3 to #4 (165K). Rihanna's "Only Girl (In The World)" jumps from #6 to #5 (157K). P!nk's "Raise Your Glass" vaults from #59 to #6 (129K). Flo Rida featuring David Guetta's "Club Can't Handle Me" holds at #7 for the third week (119K). Usher featuring Pitbull's "DJ Got Us Falling In Love" holds at #8 for the second week (109K). Trey Songz featuring Nicki Minaj's "Bottom Up" jumps from #11 to #9 (107K). Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" holds at #10 for the second week (105K). Cee-Lo Green's "F**k You (Forget You)" holds at #1 in the U.K. for the second week. It holds at #12 on Hot Digital Songs.

The thing that bugs me about Taylor Swift's chart achievements is this: paid downloads have a greater weight on charts than airplay. Most people would argue that's because when you pay for a song it means you really like, then it should count more. But when a Taylor Swift promo single is released and gets to #1 in a few hours, do people really like that song? Or are they just buying it because they like Taylor? I know many people that bought it on the first day and say that "I still haven't had the time to listen to it". I won't deny Swift's popularity, but is the song itself really that popular?

^^ It was discussed before but I forgot the name. Short answer: no. The Hot 100 measures popularity of songs. If her songs are popular on that given week, they chart. Even more so if they are popular by sales. Personally, I don't mind Taylor having hundred top 10s like this -- at least she is a singer. It's Glees' demise that couldn't come soon enough.

Los Angeles-based quartet Far*East Movement is set to move to the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 with its debut single "Like a G6" (2-1) when the chart is released tomorrow (Oct. 21). The act knocks out fellow newbie Bruno Mars, who falls to No. 2 after four weeks at No. 1 with his premiere single as a lead act, "Just the Way You Are."
Among multi-member acts, Far*East Movement is the first to take its initial chart appearance to No. 1 on the Hot 100 since D4L hit the top with "Laffy Taffy" in January 2006. Though "G6" is pushed down to No. 2 on Digital Songs by Taylor Swift's new arrival "Back to December," it shifts 223,000 (up 1%), according to Nielsen SoundScan, for its best single-week sum to date.
Cali's Far East Movement Rockets Up Hot 100
A week after opening at No. 2 on Digital Songs and No. 8 on the Hot 100 with "Speak Now," Swift claims her third chart-topper on the former list- all occurring this year- as "Back to December" debuts with 242,000 downloads. "December" starts as the Hot Shot Debut at No. 6 on the Hot 100, extending Swift's record for most top 10 debuts in the history of the chart to seven.
Her latest track is the third pre-release single from "Speak Now," which drops on Monday, Oct. 25. One more title, "Mean," was issued on Oct. 19, so expect another high Swift debut next week. Swift had previously topped Digital Songs with "Today Was a Fairytale" in February and "Mine" in August. She has yet to top the Hot 100, however, having peaked at No. 2 with "You Belong with Me" and "Today Was a Fairytale."
Taylor Swift: The Billboard Cover Story
Nelly's "Just a Dream" settles into the No. 3 slot on the Hot 100 for a second week, while Rihanna rises 6-4 with "Only Girl (In the World). The latter track jumps 11-7 on Radio Songs giving Rihanna her 14th top 10 on that list, tying Beyoncé for the most by a female since 2000.
"DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" by Usher featuring Pitbull holds at No. 5, Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" slides 4-7 and "Dynamite" by Taio Cruz falls 7-8.
Rounding out the top 10 are Flo Rida featuring David Guetta with "Club Can't Handle Me" (9-9) and Trey Songz's "Bottoms Up," featuring Nicki Minaj (13-10). The latter track is Songz's second top 10, following "Say Aah" from March of this year, and Minaj's first of her young career.

The Hot 100 measures popularity of songs. If her songs are popular on that given week, they chart. Even more so if they are popular by sales. But that's the point. This high debuts are really measuring the songs popularity or simply Taylor Swift's popularity? People bought Back to december because the liked the song, or because they like Taylor Swift and are willing to buy anything she releases? In Glee's case, at least you know most people have actually heard the songs before buying (and the fact that they liked some more than others do account for some charting higher than others on the Hot 100).

Is this the first time an asian act hit #1 on the HOT 100? pretty sure jay sean is asian. and i think i recall a thread discussing the technicalities of this and mentioned many exceptions too. but it might not be significant in the future (race shouldn't determine musical ability) and especially when you see more and more..however slowly asian acts come out

If you want to measure the most "popular" songs in any given week, look at the Billboard Hot 100 for that week.
If you want to measure whether a song was widely popular, you'll have to look at sales totals and airplay figures and cumulative figures. It obviously requires a lot more time and work to make that measurement but that's just the nature of the game.

The fact that they bought the song means they'll eventually hear it and know about it, even if they just bought it because it was Taylor Swift. The more people buy and listen, the more popular a song is for the week, so yes, 'Back To December' was really popular last week.

1. Like a G6 - 88.431 + 223,000 = 311.431 2. Bruno Mars - 135.666 + 164.000 = 299.666 3. Nelly - 89.492 + 170.000 = 259.492 4. Rihanna - 83.356 + 157.000 = 240.356 5. Usher - 111.471 + 109.000 = 220.471 I don't understand how Taylor Swift sold 241,000 downloads but is #6 on the Hot 100? I know Mediabase is quite different than AllAccess, but I didn't know it was that big of a difference. Weekly Sales of the past 5 weeks: Date | Rihanna | Bruno Mars | Like a G6 | Nelly | 10/2 | 249,000 | 194,000 | 137,000 | 155,000 | 10/9 | 161,000 | 188,000 | 180,000 | 160,000 | 10/16 | 145,000 | 178,000 | 216,000 | 169,000 | 10/23 | 145,000 | 180,000 | 221,000 | 166,000 | 10/30 | 157,000 | 164,000 | 223,000 | 170,000 |

The fact that they bought the song means they'll eventually hear it and know about it, even if they just bought it because it was Taylor Swift. The more people buy and listen, the more popular a song is for the week, so yes, 'Back To December' was really popular last week. I think that if her fans are the only ones buying these songs then they're not widely popular. And considering every week these songs manage the same debut figures, it's probably the same group of fans buying them week after week.
