The fact that they bought the song means they'll eventually hear it and know about it, even if they just bought it because it was Taylor Swift. The more people buy and listen, the more popular a song is for the week, so yes, 'Back To December' was really popular last week. I think that if her fans are the only ones buying these songs then they're not widely popular. And considering every week these songs manage the same debut figures, it's probably the same group of fans buying them week after week. Why does it matter who is buying it? It could be the exact same group every week, but the fact still remains that she has ENOUGH of these people who are willing to buy her tracks week after week that she can debut in the top 10. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Word of mouth about the song is what sends it to Z#1 on itunes in a matter of a few hours. if she released something that sounded terrible, it wouldn't be #1. (If the song is questionable, the 30 second preview button workd fine)

1. Like a G6 - 88.431 + 223,000 = 311.431 2. Bruno Mars - 135.666 + 164.000 = 299.666 3. Nelly - 89.492 + 170.000 = 259.492 4. Rihanna - 83.356 + 157.000 = 240.356 5. Usher - 111.471 + 109.000 = 220.471 I don't understand how Taylor Swift sold 241,000 downloads but is #6 on the Hot 100? I know Mediabase is quite different than AllAccess, but I didn't know it was that big of a difference. Weekly Sales of the past 5 weeks: Date | Rihanna | Bruno Mars | Like a G6 | Nelly | 10/2 | 249,000 | 194,000 | 137,000 | 155,000 | 10/9 | 161,000 | 188,000 | 180,000 | 160,000 | 10/16 | 145,000 | 178,000 | 216,000 | 169,000 | 10/23 | 145,000 | 180,000 | 221,000 | 166,000 | 10/30 | 157,000 | 164,000 | 223,000 | 170,000 |
BDS Airplay stats have been much higher than Mediabase recently. Also streaming is included on the Hot 100 and from what I can tell that seems to function more like airplay (where songs climb over time) rather than sales (where songs can debut high). Those two factors gave Usher the edge for #5

Is this the first time an asian act hit #1 on the HOT 100? pretty sure jay sean is asian. and i think i recall a thread discussing the technicalities of this and mentioned many exceptions too. but it might not be significant in the future (race shouldn't determine musical ability) and especially when you see more and more..however slowly asian acts come out Jay Sean is Indian, which is only really Asian in theory and not in practice. The only full-blooded Asian to ever top that chart was Kyu Sakamoto

Those same fans will buy anything. It's just a dollar.

If the song is selling, the song is popular. Word of mouth about the song is what sends it to Z#1 on itunes in a matter of a few hours. if she released something that sounded terrible, it wouldn't be #1.that is debatable. I think it might be. Those same fans will buy anything. It's just a dollar. It is 1.29 So if she released say, the cover from the theme from "Barney" for example, that would still sell 250,000 copies?

"OMG" stands the longest-running entry currently on the Hot 100 (29 weeks), followed by "Airplanes" (27 weeks) and "Cooler Than Me" (25 weeks).

that is debatable. I think it might be. Those same fans will buy anything. It's just a dollar. If this were true, why is it that "Russian Roulette" opened with 132k when Rihanna, at the time, was a digital staple? Quality is absolutely a determining factor in a song's debut. Hundreds of thousands of people aren't going to purchase absolutely anything simply because of the name attached to it.

Hey, Soul Sister leaves the chart.
If we used an inverse point system, it would be:
1. Hey, Soul Sister 2. Need You Now 3. Tik Tok
in the Billboard year-end Hot 100.
But, knowing the higher BDS airplay (and online streaming), Tik Tok probably still has the lead. It is also possible NYN and HSS might not even be in the top 3.

The user song reviews from people who do buy it because of the name would play a factor too

not all the time. Stans will buy anything. I'll buy any new Madonna song no matter what the quality is. I support my fav. Why would Taylor fans not do the same?

To a certain degree...yes
To this degree...no
For it to be this magnitude, the song would be selling as well as the name

Damn, all those freakin' Glee songs pushed Hey Soul Sister out. One question, I love "Memories" by David Guetta, but how on earth did the song rise from 94 to 73 on the Hot 100? I never once saw it in the top 100 on the itunes chart (and it still isn't listed) and it hasn't been mentioned in the airplay updates either. It must be getting a lot of airplay I imagine?
