Take That’s Progress (Polydor) has exceeded expectations by selling more than 235,000 copies on its first day of release.
HMV had said it expected the album to sell around 150,000 copies in the UK on its first day of release based on its own calculations but Progress, the band’s first album with Robbie Williams in 15 years, far exceeded that, according to OCC sales flashes.
The sales mean Progress is certain to top the charts on Sunday and the album has already beaten the best first-week sales for 2010, established by Kings Of Leon’s Come Around Sundown in October.
In a strong week for new releases, Rihanna’s Loud (Def Jam) looks set to debut at two, after selling more than 34,000 copies on its first day of release, while albums from Bruce Springsteen, Pink, Andre Rieu and Shayne Ward should all debut in the top 10.
Susan Boyle’s second album The Gift (Syco), which debuted at one last Sunday, will probably drop out of the top five as a result.
Oasis holds the record with 696k copies sold in the first week. At this rate TT could surpass that number.

Personally, I don't think they'll set the record but will come close to Oasis. Rihanna is selling like crazy as well.

I think it will break the record by a wide margin... I don't see how. First midweeks' update is usually multiplied by a maximum of 3, so that's 705k. But sales are probably front loaded since they have huge fan base.

The reviews have been great though...And their albums have always had legs so I wouldn't be surprised if it managed to sell 750k
Oasis' Be Here Now did 696k in three days - it was released on Thursday. First full week was over 800k.

Reviews for Take That have been great? I take it, though, that we won't be seeing it on many best-of-the-year lists. :)
Interesting how the group can see such success at this stage. Compare it to U.S. boy "bands" who are long past their commercial prime.

Compare it to U.S. boy "bands" who are long past their commercial prime. Take That were wise to be absent for a while and return with great songs and appear more mature. And Robbie Williams helps a lot with this current album. Here's the amazing standout track 'Kidz' (if allowed to post this here) www.dailymotion.com/video/xfl13h_kidz-take-that-from-bbc-radio1_music

Yeah! Let's hope the U.S. follows the UK lead in regards to Rihanna! It will. Rihanna is a superstar now. By that--I meant I really want her to sell 350k plus her first week. As big as her singles are and the fact that she constantly has HIT after HIT single, you would think she'd pull some big numbers. I think she'll come in the 200-225k range this time, but to me that is still low for someone who is a superstar and has monster singles every era.

I feel that if Rated R had been what Loud essentially is, those sales may have been possible then, but following it - nope. It's gonna be another release (assuming Loud is the medium of GGGB & Rated R's success) before we start looking at those numbers again.... Anything over or at 200k would be a great start for Rihanna with this album.

It seems that every thread is... I'm amazed how this week's HITS thread is next week's HITS (=Loud's sales) thread before we even have this week's numbers.

This is NOT Rihanna's thread. No it is not, but since her name was in the original post I decided to comment on it. Thank you!
