Black Eyed Peas to perform Super Bowl halftime 2 hours, 2 minutes ago
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—The Black Eyed Peas will be the featured halftime performer at the Super Bowl.
The Grammy award-winning group will perform Feb. 6 at Cowboys Stadium. The announcement was made Thursday during the Dallas Cowboys’ game against the New Orleans Saints.
Since forming in 1995, The Black Eyed Peas have sold more than 28 million albums worldwide and nearly 31 million digital tracks. Their new album, “The Beginning,” is set for release Tuesday.
Last year’s featured performer was The Who. Other halftime acts have included U2, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Paul McCartney and Prince.
The Super Bowl halftime show is sponsored by Bridgestone.

I'm guessing they will have to perform a 2nd single or a mash of their biggest hits.

I cannot believe this is happening. They went from all of those legendary veteran acts to...this.

Was a bit surprised when they announced this during the game. BEP does not seem like the sort of group that lines up well with Super Bowl viewer demographics. I get that they wanted to go with a current act, but seems like others might be more mass appeal. Definitely not as excited about this choice as I was about the acts in many previous years.

Taylor Swift should of been on the Halftime Show. T-Swift as the Superbowl halftime show? Hahaha, fail. And to BEP being the halftime show: hahaha, fail. In my opinion, no modern act deserves a slot like that for a while. Judging by past picks, it should be already-revolutionary acts. I want to see (in a certain sense) a legendary artist, and not listen to "Boom Boom Pow" for the 20848302837282948th time.

I think Tay Swift or Gaga would have been good choices actually. Bring in the people that normally don't watch football.

No one watches the Super Bowl for the Halftime Show anyway and they are certainly not starving for viewers.

I am a bit surprised that they would be chosen to do that. Correct me if I'm forgetting some, but since the whole 'scandal' surrounding Janet and Justin's performance in 2004, all the performers chosen have been more traditional, 'wholesome' ones (although Prince did perform a few years back and his performance was appropriate, although there was that 'controversy' afterwards). When I think of 'family friendly', BEP isn't exactly what comes to mind first. Of course, they would need to tailor their performance to the occasion and for the type of audience so that particular aspect I just mentioned may not be an issue. As WotUNeed mentioned several posts back, it does come down to the numbers and drawing in more viewers. People who may not watch otherwise might possibly tune in if there is something there that they like and/or are familiar with. I don't usually watch the Superbowl as I do not really follow football (or that many sports in general), but I do tune in to the halftime show if there is someone really interesting. No one watches the Super Bowl for the Halftime Show anyway and they are certainly not starving for viewers. There might be a few out there who do (I do actually :)). But probably not enough to make a major difference in the ratings. While they definitely aren't starving for viewers, every little bit counts.

It wouldve been cool if they did like a medley just like in 2001 when they had nsync, britney, aerosmith, nelly, and mary j blige.
They couldve done like black eyed peas, taylor, gaga, beyoncce, jay z and coldplay together........that wouldve been epic.

The 2001 HTS was not all that great- Aerosmith was there to represent the legendary acts, but the others didn't really add to the occasion (though MJB is strong). In general. it's probably best to have only a veteran, legendary act- more fitting for the program's audience.
But, BEP's "I Gotta Feeling" has become such an anthem that it does work well for the occasion- actually, the group has become a "party" group, so it's not all that surprising a choice.

Uhh, seeing as I specifically said "no modern act deserves a slot like that for a while" in my original post, you should know the answer to that. Carrie is what... 5 years in at most? Pretty modern to me, therefore, I don't think she should be asked to do it. She needs another good 10-20 years on her plate before being considered, in my humble opinion. Just because I'm a fan doesn't mean I'm trying to start a fan war, nor am I expressing any bias here. Thanks.

It's really not that unusual a choice and they've exhausted a lot of these rocker veteran acts over the past decades so unless then want to ask someone to come back a second time there were going to have to branch out eventually. Sensationalistic bitching by Pulse members is sensationalistic. What else is new?

The BEP has had a very successful tour in the US and around the world. They grossed over 93 million dollars. I went to their concert this summer, the crowd was a real mixture of all demographics. They had the largest crowd on GMA for the summer concert series and IGF has become the most dowloaded song with over 6 million downloads. I think they are really pretty much mainstream now.

I like the legendary acts to a point, but really since the Janet/Justin incident we have had no one on who is not old enough to collect social security. The Who sucked IMO, even though I do like their old stuff. Paul McCartney is a legend but a boring half-time performer, hardly a party group. I am glad to finally see a group that is current and who can put on a good show. I think in the past the BEP was not great live, but I am thinking they will use the production they used for their END tour, and it was pretty tight and amazing. P

Well, they better not perform their flop lead single. Shoulda been Gaga It's #2 on ITunes, hardly a flop! And they have a lot of hits, including two songs that dominated the charts for 26 weeks. I like GaGa, but really, she is no way mainstream enough for the superbowl. She is too outrageous, even though I think she is a great performer.

Even if she could perform live, her songs are hardly they type for a superbowl party. They are songs girls relate to, not a crowd watching the superbowl. Not saying she is not a huge star, I just don't think most men want to hear her high school teenage lyrics. She no way reaches the demos for the superbowl. The Peas had a huge tour and have many hits, and their concerts were great during their tour, the perfect kind of show for a superbowl .

she is no way mainstream enough for the superbowl. ??? Gaga having recent huge hits definitely makes her more mainstream than acts who didn't have a hit in 20-25 years and fail to get the attention of the 18-25 crowd. I love how people have this "not good enough" attitude because they dislike the act in question but the halftime show IS the lowest common denominator and more people care about it than just 50+ year old men who grew up on The Who. It's true Superbowl does not need to fish for more viewers but the commercials are still targeted for the younger crowd, so they won't care much if old people change the channel because they don't know "I Gotta Feeling".

It's not like they've been picking obscure acts in the past; most young people know some classic rock, and, though I have nothing to support this, I'd propose that the group of people who enjoy football are likely to also enjoy at least some rock music, including classic. It's not like it was that much of a stretch.

Really, Gaga and Swift as singers during the Superbowl? Really? I'm a huge BEP fan (as you all know) and maybe I'm being a bit bias here, but the Peas have proven to attract all demographics, young kids, teens, parents, grandparents, male and female. Like every artists there those who can't stand them, but I think they're at least "okay" for the average person, or in this case football fan. Believe me that there would be many complaints if they all of a sudden put Gaga in front of their screens, it simply does not appeal to 90% of men who watch football, the women there would be no problem. Plus Fergie is part owner of the Dolphins, so I guess she has connections too haha.

It's true Superbowl does not need to fish for more viewers but the commercials are still targeted for the younger crowd, so they won't care much if old people change the channel because they don't know "I Gotta Feeling". I love GaGa as a performer, but she is not the kind of performer at this point they are going to put on halftime. She has done outrageous things in public, like flipping out the crowd and wearing underpants to two baseball games in NYC. She goes for shock value with her performances. And as much as the younger demo likes her, her largest audience is females and gay males. I don't know any straight guys my age who would go to a GaGa concert, unless with a girlfriend, but my gay male friends love her. The Peas on the other hand have managed to morph into an act that can play at events like this. They attract men and wonen of all ages to their concerts. They also played the World Cup, which is way bigger than the Super Bowl worldwide. As I said, at the concert i went to there were people of every age and race. You know they have hit the mainstream when Oprah has them on for her Xmas show, and when the Today show has their staff and news people doing a video to IGF last week! As far as legendary acts are concerned, I am glad to see someone who is not old enough to be my parents on the superbowl. Not saying i don't like the music of their legends, but seeing people who are in their 60's trying to move around, or sing can be pretty bad. My aunt who was a huge an of the Who was cringing last year when they were on the Superbowl. The superbowl used to have current acts. Didn't Michael perform when he was a huge star? Now because of an overreaction, they played it safe and most of the time boring. It's supposed to be a party, with performers who still can move and have energy. I totally appreciate all of the legend's music, and I like it a lot, but it's time to get a party going at halftime.

^I see your point, I guess I was just against the phrase "mainstream" in this context, it's true performance-wise she wouldn't fit, but songs like "Just Dance" or "Poker Face" are definitely popular enough to be heard at events like this, they go beyond the "shock factor".
You're right about BEP, they have the widest audience at the moment, and yes, the World Cup was a bigger event already. I agree about the "legends", nobody is saying their music is worse or anything but Superbowl is not supposed to be about nostalgia. The Who did get a lot of bad press and everyone knows the performers need to have backing tapes so these acts, from those the crowd expects improvisation etc, are being wasted. I believe Michael performed at the halftime show right before the accusations and mostly it was songs from his current album Dangerous. I think Madonna was rumored to perform in 2000, at the time her image was the most accessible to the public.
It's true the only reason they switched to old faithful acts to avoid any glimpse of "controversy", but it's been seven years now and they probably ran out of legends anyway.

They will 100% guaranteed be performing I Gotta Feeling. Then a medley of past hits and songs of the new album.
