The end of what qualifies as terrestrial commercial rock radio in New York is near. From what I've read over the last few months, this is really a formality; owner Emmis Communications wants to sell the station to ESPN, whose sports radio station in New York, on 1050 on the AM dial, has a somewhat weak signal. WIth 50,000 watts on an FM signal, ESPN radio will be able to be heard more clearly in more locations. Like country in New York, from now on rock radio will probably only be available on the internet, satellite, and HD radio. A 2.0 rating can't cut it. www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/emmis-wrxp-reportedly-on-the-selling-block_b20446

I can get 1050 so a simulcast on 101.9 doesn't help me, but I rarely listen to WRXP anyway.

New York is gonna have no Alternative, Active Rock, or Triple A - that's insane!! People in NYC must really not like rock I guess >:(

What a mess. Something told me it was never going to work. You can bet your horse money that people will question the wisdom of abandoning jazz fans by dumping WQCD 'CD-101.9' for WRXP nearly 3 years ago.
And Houster, you are absolutely right: Soon enough, people will have to switch to Internet radio to get the music they want, via desktop, laptop, smartphone, iPad or iPad clone, or basic shelf or nightstand console. Slowly but surely, conventional AM/FM radio is dying, and deserves to.

I guess this would leave Q104 as the only rock outlet in NY.

The feeling on the New York board at radio-info.com is that RXP isn't gonna be sold (I'm not even sure it's still "up for sale")
I think by the end of this year, Alternative's gonna be big enough again that either RXP is gonna have to lean that way (which they already are), or IMO it'll flip to Alternative

I'd like it to flip to Alternative, I would love to have an Alt station here, I mean we have enough urban, pop, rhythmic stations....

New York's Q 104 is a classic rock station. Aside from weekend shows like Jonathan Clarke's "Out Of The Box", and occasionally Steven Van Zandt's "Underground Garage", virtually no new rock music is played on Q 104.
