I don't think we're disagreeing, 2m. I'm just saying you can't judge the success of the *show* based solely on the success/failure of its contestants' sales. I understand This year AI will become just another show. Networks get a certain amount of advertising dollars for a #1 show, they get less for a show that isn't performing as well. (so less revenue from there too, the albums and the tours clearly won't bring in anything) The core "cast" of this show doesn't rake in the bucks but the judges and the host get a bundle. I personally don't think this is the last year (because it was still #1 last year) but I think after 2012 it will be gone. Advertising rates are set each year before the new season. AI ad rates for this year are already set, and it still is pulling in more than any other show on TV. Ad revenue will be affected next year since ratings will likely go down, but in all reality it's still going to be FOX's number one show this year. It has a long, long way to fall before FOX will cancel it.

We'll see
It is quite possible, depending on the season that Glee could end up being Fox's #1 show.

Glee has averaged 11-12 million viewers this season. FOX isn't even airing it the same night as Idol anymore, so I wouldn't expect that number to change.
Here are the top 10 shows from last year: 1 AMERICAN IDOL-TUESDAY FOX 24,714
2 AMERICAN IDOL-WEDNESDAY FOX 23,461
3 DANCING WITH THE STARS ABC 19,725
4 NBC SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL NBC 18,782
5 NCIS CBS 18,699
6 UNDERCOVER BOSS CBS 17,732
7 THE MENTALIST CBS 16,828
8 CSI CBS 15,820
9 NCIS: LA CBS 15,667
10 DANCING WITH THE STARS RESULTS ABC 15,298
I doubt Idol falls 12+ million viewers in one year just because of Simon leaving. If you cancel Idol FOX has 2 hours of programming to fill that would bring in substantially less ad revenue. Last year, it brought in 700 million in ad revenue alone. It will be less this year, but still 3 times the amount of what Glee will bring in, the networks second highest show in terms of ad revenue.
The X-Factor I think will dilute both shows, but it's still going to be more profitable than the majority of the FOX schedule. It would be a horrible business decision to not run it as long as possible.

Are you sure that those numbers are right? I remember Idol having many nights under 20 million, and I can't fathom how the average could have been close to 25 million.

Yeah, they're right. It always premiers with huge numbers with the audition episodes and declines a little later in the season.

I believe those numbers are "Live + 7" (meaning, taking into account DVD viewership up to 7 days after the initial broadcast- which don't really factor into ad rates). But, nonetheless, it was the top show (probably in the 18-49 demo, as well).

It was #1 in the 18-49 demo by a wide margin. It averaged an 8.3 in that demo last season - Glee peaked at a 5.9 with the Britney episode and has since dropped to a 4.0.

the 18-49 Demo is more important than viewers, and Idol will def be the top show, even if it drops to a 6.0 rating.

Holiday albums often are sold at Christian outlets, so the totals for those may be even higher.

Just more evidence of why SoundScan is the source writers cite for new album sales in recent years; the RIAA lags behind.
