Nobody is saying that Eminem won't sell well. What a joke this is.

^Maybe we'll find out whether that's changed in the last year. If not Swift, then Stephanie G., I'd think, has sold the most digital tracks since SoundScan started tracking sales in 2003. Of course, they didn't really start registering significant amounts until 2005, and then exlpoded 2006/2007. It took me a while to figure out who was Stephanie G. I think that considering she has had more hits and albums this year, Rihanna might be closer than GaGa now, but I think Swift should have the #1 spot thanks to her countdown singles, the 1m selling 'Mine' and decent sales for her old singles. HER countdown singles lost a ton of sales when the album released, mean went negative.

^They don't lose their overall sales total, though- just the week the album's released, it supposedly gets sales "subtracted" from the tally, that a consumer bought by pre-ordering the album. At least that's how I think it works. I still wonder when that policy took effect- from the start or sometime after? Recall that some pre-order tracks would actually gain sales during an album release week.

I think that if countdown single song sold 80,000 during the album release week and got "returned" (as Billboard once called it), 60,000 times, it would still appear on the Hot Digital Songs as a song selling 20,000. Those 20k would add up to the previous total it had. If it went negative it means that it was "returned" more than bought that week, but it's impossible that it has a negative total, so her countdown singles still will add up to her all time total sales.

So are there any new albums out whatsoever today (12/28) that are due to chart on the Billboard 200 next week? I can't find anything on Amazon, Wikipedia or HITS suggesting it...

There usually aren't any big releases the last week of the year, at least that I recall.

TAYLOR'S SWIFT, TOPS BOYLE ON LAST CHART OF YEAR Jamie Foxx, Keyshia Cole, Keri Hilson Debut In Year-End Tally
December 28, 2010
With no new complete chart this week, HITS nevertheless plows forward with its Top 15, which will once again be headed by Big Machine's Taylor Swift, whose Speak Now should do between 275-300k to remain at #1. That will top her total of 255k last week and bring her cumulative sales to a warming 2.9 million.
Columbia's Susan Boyle will remain at #2 with The Gift logging in another 250-275k, bringing her total to 1.9 million and counting. The Top 5 will be rounded out by a trio of Sony Music acts, giving Rob Stringer's team a whopping four of them, including Epic's posthumous Michael Jackson album and a pair of Columbia releases in Glee Cast Christmas and Jackie Evancho, with all three in the 140-160k range. The week's top debut goes to yet another Sony act, this one from outgoing chief Barry Weiss' RCA/Jive Label Group team in Jamie Foxx's J/RMG release, Best Night of My Life, bowing at #6. Geffen's Keyshia Cole album, Calling All Hearts, notches the only other Top 10 debut at #9 sporting an estimated total of 120-140k, with Def Jam/IDJ's Rihanna at #7 (130-150k), Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown's Nicki Minaj at #8 (120-140k) and Shady/Aftermath/Interscope multiple Grammy nominee Eminem's resurgent Recovery rounding out the Top 10 (120-140k). Interscope's Keri Hilson debuts just outside at #11 with 90-110k, followed by Reprise's Josh Groban, Jive/JLG's R. Kelly, Atlantic's Kid Rock and Capitol/EMI's Katy Perry completing the Top 15, all slated to sell between 90-100k apiece. ---------------------------------------------------- Great sales for Rihanna and Eminem. And UK nr1 sold more than US nr1. I was hoping for more with Taylor. :(

Wow, Eminem doing 140k :O To be fair, Eminem is promoted heavily right now. All these discounts @itunes, 10 Grammy noms, EW music pick on their site etc.

Eminem is not the only artist being "heavily promoted" right now. Plenty of other artists were on sale for under $9.99 this week. Eminem has rarely been in the sales ads for weeks. I've seen Rihanna and many other artists for $7.99 at Best Buy. No one remembers Grammy nominations 4 weeks after they were released. That only impacted sales the week they were announced/the week after. And Eminem is not the #1 album on every year-end list, there are tons of other artists on the lists and even in the #1 position. Seems like any time Eminem is doing good there is a "reason" why. Maybe the reason is....his CD was one of the best of year and people want it. And maybe he was "heavily promoted" but don't for a second act like he is the only artist...or that he is even the most promoted artist in the top 10 of the BB 200.

So he jumped back into the top 10 just because people waited until this week to buy the album?

So he jumped back into the top 10 just because people waited until this week to buy the album? LOL. Obviously Itunes discount had a lot do do with it. "Recovery" started climbing @itunes very fast after they announced it. To the earlier poster- i never said he was the only one promoted...that does not take from the fact that he is promoted. "Recovery" is among my top albums of the year, too.

I have a friend who doesn't buy CDs all year and she uses money/giftcards she got from Xmas to purchase a few she really liked. I'm sure a lot of people do stuff like that.

It's great that Eminem's album continues to sell. But, I don't think this album is as critically successful as his best works (i.e. I haven't seen it do as well on year-end lists as some of the big critical hits of the year).
If SuBo is prpojected for 250K-275K, The Gift should have little trouble passing 2m with the final week's sales in the mix.

What does your experience tell you how much of a drop are we looking at this week in SuBo-s and Taylor-s cases?

#1 and #2 in UK sold more than #1 in USA. #1 not even 300k, that's bad.

passionformusic- the week after Christmas still is one of the biggest sales weeks of the year, but sales will come down some. It's the week thereafter that album sales really start to decline. Boyle's album, being a holiday-oriented title, may see a larger decline, unless for some reason, people continue buying the album into the new year. It does have some "inspirational" songs on it, so that could help soften the typical holiday-album decline.

what's so shocking about that? These new figures exceed the initial prediction of 110-120k!

I just checked last year's comparable chart for next week (1/16/10). Not surprisingly, the drops were pretty steep in the post-Christmas week. In the last few years, with album sales steadily dropping, the post-Christmas declines look to be larger than past years.
This was the top 5 for that chart:
1. Susan Boyle, 136,566 (-81%) 2. Lady Gaga, 82,148 (-51%) 3. Alicia Keys, 79,801 (-71%) 4. Mary J. Blige, 62,181 (-81%) 5. Taylor Swift, 59,701 (-73%)
