Channel 92.3

Up until about June, they were one of the best & most experimental alt. stations in the country. Then midway throught the year they sold out and became pretty generic -- but their ratings plummeted. ! Recently they've been trying to undo some of the damage, but they still have a ways to go and not to mention not much time left -- near the end of the year, they got bought out by a Spanish language comapny. We thought they'd be gone in December, but I guess the co. hasn't decided what to do with them yet, so we still have them, at least for another month or two.

Anyway, all things considered their Top 92 was as good as it could have been. I was pleased to see them bring in most of the songs they spun from their pre-sellout era.

I KNEW 1, 2, and 3 were going to be Lisztomania, Animal, and Sweet Disposition, as they got airplay all year; Channel (pre-sellout) added them way before anyone else did, and then by the time they sold out they had become big hits, so they put them in high rotation and stuck them there for the rest of the year. MGMT should not be there from 2008, but other than that, it's good to see that there aren't too many songs from 2009 even. Slightly Stoopid is acceptable as even though that's even older, a bunch of stations resurrected it earlier this year.

Many of the songs they spun from the pre-sellout era weren't nearly as high as they should be (i.e. Stylo is at 84, but that song was HUGE on the station), but at least they played them. I was happy, though, that they remembered Cold War Kids (being the sole pre-sellout song in their Top 30), Hockey, Passion Pit x2, OK Go, Big Pink, Death Cab, Dan Black, Fanfarlo, Gaslight Anthem x2, New Politics, and especially Jesse Malin & the St. Marks Social -- I really have no idea where the hell they fetched Jesse Malin back from (the only thing I know of him is he had a hit on AAA many years ago called "Queen of the Underworld," without the St. Marks Social.) The only ones I can think of they left out were "Burial" by Miike Snow and "In Your Heart" by A Place to Bury Strangers, but understandable since both of those are kind of dreary and melacholic (although they both made my Top 50!) I don't see what makes Neon Trees anymore experimental or less mainstream than Breaking Benjamin. Breaking Benjamin is just more hard rock and Neon Trees is more indie rock, but they're the equivalents within their genres...the epitomized/streamlined version that allows them to be as successful as the innovators of their genre whose sound they modified and streamlined in the first place. I hate the idea that indie rock is somehow more artsy than heavier stuff just because hipster dig it. A lot of it takes the musical acumen/IQ of tonedeaf poser to write. I'll end this rant for now, but I'll be back for more.

Well, since somebody already posted 89x's countdown for me, and my personally more-listened-to 100.7 station didn't have a countdown that I was aware of...did anyone happen to catch the Out of Order countdown? This is what I had:

I missed a segment, because for some reason, my station decided to load up last week's Christmas show and play a segment from that instead of the current one. That segment was supposed to have something from 30 Seconds To Mars, but it could really be either song. Didn't hear "Little Lion Man" and I think that's a pretty good bet to have been #3 as part of the missing segment.

"Die By The Drop" from The Dead Weather, and Gorillaz' "Stylo" were played during the show, but their positions weren't announced, and I didn't hear them be declared as extras, either (it was the first time I'd ever heard either song on the radio, which was awesome). That leaves 4 potential songs to fill 3 spots, and with "Sweet Disposition" ending up so high on KROQ's list, one of those spots may have been taken by that even.

Love that all the songs were from this year. And that no artist was represented more than once. And that he still had nothing to say about The Dirty Heads. And that "Ready To Start" was the #1 despite not performing on their weekly countdown any better than it did on the national charts, and that he all but admitted they put it at #1 "because we can". :).

Wherever did I say that Neon Trees is anymore experimental or less mainstream than Breaking Bejnamin, or that a station sold out because it started to include active rock? Furthermore I care very little what is or is not considered "indie" and would not say that Neon Trees qualifies as that anymore. Nor are they "precious" to me.

The only thing that I wrote that could have inferred that is that I said they added Neon Trees "Animal" long before most people had heard of them. So yes, doing that is an experimental move, as it would be for any new band. If they would have waited until it was Top 20 (like they did with "1983") then obviously, that wouldn't have been so experimental. My gripe with them adding BB (and Shinedown for that matter) was that they'd never touched them before and yet they suddenly started playing their hits.

In fact, I specifically mentioned that they put "Animal" into high rotation after selling out!

Them "selling" out had very little to do with Breaking Benjamin vs. Neon Trees. It had more to do with the times they added songs (i.e. they used to add songs before/right when they hit the Top 50, then they started waiting until they hit the top 20, or 10, and just plain not taking risks they did before.) It also had to do with a mass dumping of "obscure" currents and recurrents (it wasn't a coincidence that the Big Pink, Hockey, Passion Pit, Jesse Malin, the Cold War Kids, White Lies, Glasvegas, Miike Snow, and many others all disappeared from the station at the exact same time, and that Breaking Benjamin and Shinedown suddenly appeared at the exact same time too) in favor of the generic overplayed tracks that every alt. stations seems to be required to play from RedHotStoneTempleRadioheadSublimeFighterPilotsetc, which again, all appeared at this time, as well as dropping just about every 80s track they ever played and replacing them with one of U2's greatest hits every hour, but I didn't touch on that in this topic because it's just about this year's currents.

You reached too far and jumped to conclusions just so you could bring your Neon Trees rant into this topic.

Idk, I don't think I reached that far. Your original post really did make it seem like an alternative station playing Breaking Benjamin is a sellout move which you haven't retracted. Your new post elaborates by talking about the risk element of adding songs lower on the chart or pre-charting, which helps me agree with you in that sense. But I don't think being cutting edge is about exclusion in that they would have been best off adding Breaking Benjamin and Shinedown while continuing to play those other bands. That would have been the most interesting. It's also stupid of them not to play Breaking Benjamin, because I don't recall that station having an active rock station in their market, which means they're really the only logical choice to play music from a band who happens to be fairly big. They shouldn't be elitist; they should be all over that. I don't understand why stations feel like they have to assume an identity as either the super left of center alternative that therefore doesn't play any alt-metal/nu-metal and other stations play all those songs that chart high enough and don't touch anything below the top 30 like you pointed out. It feels like there should be more stations that take the obvious best of both worlds, which is part of why I mentioned above that The Buzz is a very strong alternative station, but they would benefit from taking a few more risks on the super alt/indie and heavier active-leaning songs and making their playlist expand even further given they have no other new alt/rock stations in the market.

I hadn't retracted it because I didn't say it in the first place, but to clear up any misunderstanding, I don't have any problems with an alternative station playing Breaking Benjamin alongside the other songs I mentioned. :) Shinedown ehh...I'd just personally rather not hear them at all, on any station, although I can tolerate the occasional "Second Chance." I agree that the best alternative stations play the hits as well as the non-hits, but one of the reason Channel's sellout was so infuriating is that we actually do already have a mainstream alt. station in this market, Live 105, which has held that position for many years, and Live 105 has indeed been the one to play all the alt. hits including Breaking Benjamin and Shinedown and Chevelle and other harder-sounding songs. Channel was in a very good position to be a "super left-of-center" station that did a great job of breaking new artists in (although it's not like they were so elitist to ignored the hits completely; they still played plenty of AFI, 30 Seconds to Mars, Muse, Linkin Park, etc) and had made a pretty good sound & reputation for themselves focusing on lesser known indie/electronic/rap-leaning alt songs. This also explains why their ratings dropped after they essentially became a Live 105 clone; when we want to hear that, which I do on occasion, we'd just tune into Live 105.

KRBZ here in Kansas City did absolutely nothing for the end of the year. Usually all the jocks host their own top 10 albums list from christmas on and then on new years eve a top 96 countdown.

Thanks :). Yeah, the radio countdown listenin' part of me that never died naturally draws me to the Out of Order show any Saturday morning that I'm not working. It's helped get back into new alternative music again. That, and better songs in the top half of the charts.

Interesting about the CHRs. I wasn't aware of that because I never tune in to those anymore since I thought they were almost replicas of Urban/Rhythmic stations, but maybe I'll check out WHYI & WLDI tomorrow on my drive home from work to see if you're correct. WRMF is my local Hot AC station and I have noticed lately them gearing more towards to playing more Alternative artists. I'd love to see a mix of an Alternative/Hot AC station become a format since there's so many bands that are still around that were huge on Alternative in the 90s but you never hear anymore.
