After a week or so of stunting, hot AC Mix 106.5 relaunched at 7:30a Eastern this morning as 106.5 the Lake with a variety hits format (a Jack-like format). First song on the new station was "Cleveland Rocks" by Ian Hunter. That's the song that's sung on the Drew Carey Show (though it's not Ian's version that's played).
Hot AC was already a crowded format in Cleveland with Q104 and Mix's sister hot AC WKDD from nearby Akron, which puts in a good signal into Cleveland.

I haven't kept track of Cleveland radio in a long time, but I do remember that late in the 90's, Mix (like many other Clear Channel Mix stations) was doing a broad-based Hot AC format with the "80's, 90's, and 70's" tagline. The station at the time leaned heavily on 80's rock and had a wider playlist than the typical Hot AC. They were fairly successful with this approach.
I don't know how Mix has been sounding recently: whether they still sounded like that when they flipped or they changed to a more typical Hot AC presentation. But it seems like they've gone full circle with this format change- The Lake is featuring the very same 80's rock songs that Mix had successs with 10+ years ago.

Mix had been an all-Christmas music station, so I hadn't had a chance to listen to them a lot. I just wonder why they didn't go into the flip after the Christmas music was done.

That's very similar to what the former WKTI in Milwaukee did a couple of years ago. They blew up their long time Hot AC format, basically coming full circle with a format change to Lake 94.5, also a Jack-FM type of variety hits format. And like the Mix in Cleveland, this was the type of music WKTI used to play in the 70's and early 80's, a rock leaning CHR format with many of the same songs in the Lake 94.5 rotation today.
