Various lists can be found here: www.google.com/intl/en/press/zeitgeist2010/The worldwide 2010 entertainment list is: Fastest Rising in Entertainment 1. justin bieber 2. shakira 3. eminem 4. netflix 5. youtube videos 6. lady gaga 7. kesha 8. nicki minaj 9. grooveshark 10. transformers 3 The interesting part is comparing the charts. Below are charts of the top 2010 google search results for various pop stars. Interestingly, even in years when she does nothing, Madonna is still searched more than other pop stars that are currently in the spotlight. The worldwide stats also show that Janet Jackson is truly just a US artist. Its the only place people search for her. It also shows that they care more about Janet's haircut than her music. Madonna's Glee episode created the most google search buzz for Madonna. Beyonce searches where dead in 2010. Interestingly, lots of people from all over the world where searching for Christina Aguilera in 2010. It also showed obvious stats, like that Kylie is very popular in Australia and that Shakira is very popular in Latin America. Rhianna's reach is quite limited. Interest in her is only high in the US, UK & Australia. Interestingly, Madonna & Britney's stats are quite similar. Interest in Nicki Minaj is still pretty low. Rhianna: Beyonce: Madonna: Britney Spears: Lady Gaga: Shakira: Ke$ha: Janet Jackson: Kylie Minogue: Nicki Minaj: Christina Aguilera:

Madonna will always be in the spotlight. She is the last living legend of our time. Well...the one who truly matters. Paul McCartney probably comes in 2nd. Bob Dylan 3rd. Aretha Franklin 4th.

You spelled Rihanna wrong, lol. It must be commonly miss-spelled because Rihanna has a small search result on google. Most people searched for Rhianna in 2010. In the US people searched for Rhianna, in Africa they search for Rihanna: Rihanna Rhianna

interesting list britney is going to that direction. she didn't do anything in 2010 except glee but people always curios about her. yeah, compare the regional maps of Britney & Madonna. They are very similar. They both did hardly anything in 2010, yet people from all over the world searched for them. Beyonce hardly did anything in 2010 and her search stats died. Oddly, mostly just people in Africa where searching for Beyonce news in 2010. Does this mean Beyonce is not memorable? Once she's out of the spotlight people seem to forget about her, whereas when Britney & Madonna disappear people keep searching the net for news on them. Madonna: Britney: Beyonce:

Some people here said that people in the US did not know about Waka Waka. The Google search stats from July 2010 show that during the Waka Waka peak Shakira's Google searches where up even in the US:

Spears definitely is someone who evokes curiosity and interest (her crazy personal-life antics boosted that without a doubt), but as of now, she's not headed in the direction of the kind of reverence that someone like Madonna has.
But Spears continues as the biggest female star to emerge in the last decade+- and she undoubtedly is the biggest new pop culture force in the last 15 years or so. Even though someone like Lady Gaga encompasses more Madonna-like qualities than any wannabe, she does not quite match the interest in Spears or even the level of fan support (witness first-week sales of Spears' singles vs. something like "Bad Romance" when it hit). We'll have a better idea when Gaga's new single hits, though.
Interesting that the USA isn't in the top 10 for Madge, Spears or Steph. G. They do command more of a global interest, though.

yea, it will be interesting to compare the impact of HIAM vs. Born This Way...once it comes out. It will be hard to top Britney's media blitz.

Interest in her is only high in the US, UK & Australia. Interestingly, Madonna & Britney's stats are quite similar. Interest in Nicki Minaj is still pretty low. I don't think the maps work that way. The maps are not comparable to each other. You could only compare the shades of blue within each map to see the level of searches in each region for that particular artist. And the search level for an artist in each region itself isn't an absolute number -- it's relative to the total number of all searches in that particular region. So if, for example, there are 50 searches for an artist in Haiti where the total number of all searches is 100 (1 in 2) and 200 searches for said artist out of 1K total searches in Canada (1 in 5), Haiti's color on the map for that particular artist will be in a darker shade than Canada's. But on another artist's map, the same number of searches in Canada will result in the darkest shade for Canada if they represent the highest relative number of searches (1 in 5) in comparison to the artist's level of searches in other regions. So the same number of searches in a particular region for 2 different artists could result in different shades of blue on their respective maps. Conversely, the same shade of blue on 2 different artists' respective maps does not necessarily represent the same level of searches for each artist. Look at this map for Ruben Studdard: www.google.com/insights/search/#cat=3&q=ruben%20studdard&date=1%2F2010%2012m&cmpt=qHe's basically a local act, so naturally his highest level of searches came from the US. And thus on his map, the US has the darkest shade of blue indicating a high search index volume. For him, that is -- it's not comparable to other artists' maps. On the maps for Madonna, Britney and Gaga, the US is in a lighter shade of blue indicating a medium search index volume, but no one in their right mind would believe that there were fewer searches for them there than there were for Studdard. So in short, you can't use the maps to see which artist has the highest level of searches, but you can use them to see where a particular artist's highest level of searches came from and how far reaching their exposure is.

So in short, you can't use the maps to see which artist has the highest level of searches, but you can use them to see where a particular artist's highest level of searches came from and how far reaching their exposure is. I noticed that. I said the charts showed where they where popular. The Ruben Studdard chart was accurate. Only the US & Canada showed up, showing that only people in the US & Canada know who he is. A global artist, like Madonna & Britney, show the whole world lighting up because people search for them everywhere. Whereas Ke$ha is seen as mostly a US artist. When I said "Madonna was searched more" I meant that her searches where more spread out throughout the whole world. Showing her draw is widespread. Whereas someone like Janet, she's mostly just searched for in the US/Canada. When I compared Britney & Madonna, I talked about how diverse their exposure was, and how similar it was. The same regions lit up for both of them. Having widespread worldwide exposure is essential for the major divas. Knowing a bit about the pop stars is essential to be able to compare the charts. For example. Shakira is crazy over in Latin America. Looking at her 2010 June chart below, the 100 (the dark blue parts) where reached in Latin America. In order for the rest of the world to light up in the same shade (or close to that dark shade of blue), it would mean the interest was just as high (or close). It did, meaning that interest in her was high world wide in June 2010.

That's a fail because BR outsold both Womanizer and 3 during it's first week of sales. The only reason it didn't hit #1 was because the competition was tough.

I wish they'd show us the top overall searches as opposed to these 'fastest rising' lists, but this one is intersting:
In the News 1. Haiti 2. Besiktas 3. Chile 4. Earthquake 5. Lady gaga 6. iPhone 4 7. Jörg kachelmann 8. Menowin fröhlich 9. Mobile technology 10. Oil spill

# Fastest Rising in Entertainment
1. justin bieber 2. shakira 3. eminem 4. netflix 5. youtube videos 6. lady gaga 7. kesha 8. nicki minaj 9. grooveshark 10. transformers 3
# Fastest Rising People
1. justin bieber 2. katy perry 3. selena gomez 4. kim kardashian 5. eminem 6. lady gaga 7. miley cyrus 8. taylor lautner 9. megan fox 10. robert pattinson
...wut? I don't understand. How is Katy 2nd fastest rising in People but isn't even on the etertainment list? And vice versa with Shakira.

When I said "Madonna was searched more" I meant that her searches where more spread out throughout the whole world. Um, they hardly meant the same, no? I mean, you also said that Beyonce's searches were dead in 2010 because her map didn't lit up everywhere. That's not necessarily true, nor does it necessarily mean that there were fewer searches for her than there were for artists whose maps lit up more like Madonna. If you look at Beyonce's maps for 2008 and 2009 when she was in an active era, they look pretty much the same as the 2010 map does. So her 2010 map's mostly light coloring could not be attributed to the fact that she was inactive during the year. It could just mean that there was such a high level of interest for her in some countries in Africa that the other regions were pale in comparison. You can see how her map looks without the searches from Africa (for some reasons there doesn't seem to be any searches for anybody from Africa -- Africans don't search in January? ??? LOL) if you do her map for 2011 -- it looks very different with the highest interest came from Brazil and then the US.

Do they do anything to separate when these searches are relevant? For example, looking at Madonna's list, her top searches include "Lady Madonna" (which is more likely than not a search about the Beatles song), "La Madonna" (which is likely searching for artwork or information about Mary herself), "revolver" (the gun), and her rising searches include "Vogue" (a popular magazine). Did Google do anything to determine when these searches actually had anything to do with Madonna the singer, or did they all get lumped in?
