We all know that in 1991 the Hot 100 changed from being playlist / retail rank based to being monitored. The charts, and the music industry was never the same again.
I have always wondered how the charts of the 70s and 80s - and thus the music in general - would have differed if the charts had utilized that tech 20 years earlier.
Right off the bat, there would have been far fewer #1 songs.
But - like Hip-Hop dominating 20 years later - would Disco have dominated the charts far more? Would a song like "You Light Up My Life" have been #1 for 20 weeks?
