radio blows. that's why great songs like Rolling In The Deep don't get played.

I know, like when radio turned Whats my Name into a huge airplay number one yet the sales never represented the same kind of enthusiasm from the public. I believe it was only number one for a week on the digital charts? Yet you get songs that are clearly showing interest from the public (ie RiTD, Mumford & Sons and On the Floor) and yet radio is reluctant to play it. Um don't the sales dictate that there's an audience for it? What's to be skeptical about?

Sales compares to airplay are a relatively small component. Even a 300k single has been purchased by 0.1% of the population. ITA that radio should take some chances when songs are moving like Adele etc. But your sales theory also makes argument for Glee. LOL

I think some Glee songs should have gotten a promotional push at radio like Don't Stop Believing. I may not like it but it was what was popular. I'm just saying, when radio station PDs are umm'ing and ahh'in over whether a certain song might appeal to it's audience, a good look at the digital sales chart should give them some bit of confidence. It's not like they're an unproven liability.

new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart_watch/74340/week-ending-march-6-2011-songs-rated-pg/Week Ending March 6, 2011: Songs: Rated PGPosted Wed Mar 9, 2011 by Paul Grein in Chart Watch This week's Hot 100 should probably be rated PG-13. The top four songs are Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," which is the most gay-friendly song ever to become a pop smash; Rihanna's "S&M," a frisky ode to kinky sex; and two songs with "the F word" in their titles: Cee Lo Green's "F**k You (Forget You)" and P!nk's "F**kin' Perfect." J.Lo's "On The Floor," which jumps to #5, is the highest-ranking ranking song on this week's chart that wouldn't give lyric watchdog types a blood pressure spike. "Born This Way" tops the Hot 100 for the fourth straight (you should forgive the expression) week. It's the first song to debut at #1 and then stay there for four weeks since Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" achieved the feat in 1998. It's the first song by a female solo artist to do this since Mariah Carey's "Fantasy," which held tight for eight weeks in 1995. "Born This Way" tops "Just Dance" (featuring Colby O'Donis) as Gaga's longest-running #1 hit to date. That 2009 smash logged three weeks at #1. I have more good news for Gaga. Her 2009 smash "Poker Face" tops the 6 million mark in sales this week. Gaga has two of the three songs that have reached 6 million in digital sales. "Just Dance" reached 6 million three weeks ago. The only non-Gaga song that has sold 6 million digital copies is the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," which leads all songs with digital sales of 6,927,000 copies. Cee Lo Green's "F**k You (Forget You)" holds at #2 for the third straight week. The song reminds me a little bit of the Village People's "Y.M.C.A.," a big gay wink which also logged three weeks at #2 in February 1979. In both cases, the songs' irrepressible energy and good spirits simply overpowered all resistance. Rihanna's "S&M" jumps from #5 to #3. It's her 13th top five hit. Billboard's Gary Trust notes that only four women have notched more top five hits. Madonna leads all women with 28 top five hits, followed by Mariah Carey (26), Janet Jackson (24) and Whitney Houston (19). Beyonce and Olivia Newton-John are tied with Rihanna with 13 top five hits each. Trust's tally combines lead and featured performances, but it doesn't include prior group involvements. If you were to include those, Beyonce's total would jump to 22 (counting nine top five hits with Destiny's Child). Of course, if you were to combine solo and group recordings, you'd also pick up Diana Ross, who also had 22 top five hits: 15 with the Supremes and seven as a solo star. I'm not sure that kids today realize just how big Diana Ross was in her heyday. She was every bit as big as Beyonce and Whitney at their peaks (and maybe even bigger). Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are unquestionably the two biggest recording stars to come out of American Idol. They have always had distinct identities: Clarkson is the pop dynamo; Underwood, the country superstar. But now Clarkson is moving in on Underwood's turf. Clarkson last week landed her first #1 hit on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart as the featured artist on Jason Aldean's "Don't You Wanna Stay." Clarkson had previously climbed as high as #2 on the country chart in September 2007 as Reba McEntire's duet partner on a remake of Clarkson's 2005 pop hit "Because Of You." Billboard's Wade Jessen notes that Clarkson is the third American Idol contestant to land a #1 country hit. Underwood has amassed 10 chart-toppers, from 2006's "Jesus, Take The Wheel" to 2010's "Undo It." Josh Gracin has earned one: "Nothin' To Lose" in March 2005. Underwood is also the leader among Idol alumni in topping the Country Albums chart. She had had three #1 country albums. Kellie Pickler has had two. Bucky Covington has had one. I'm sure you all know that Clarkson was the winner on Season 1 of American Idol and that Underwood took the title in Season 4. But you may have forgotten that Gracin finished fourth in Season 2 and that Pickler and Covington were both finalists in Season 5. (Pickler finished sixth. Covington placed eighth.) "Don't You Wanna Stay" is Aldean's fifth #1 country hit. It jumps from #35 to #34 in its 18th week on the Hot 100. Pop Quiz: Collaborations dominate the pop chart, but they're rarer in country. How many collaborations would you say there were on last week's Top Country Songs chart (which runs 50 titles deep)? Answer below. Ke$ha's "Blow" jumps from #11 to #7, becoming her seventh top 10 hit (counting a featured role on 3OH!3's "Blah, Blah, Blah.") The video for "Blow" features actor James Van Der Beek, who is best known for his role in Dawson's Creek. Ke$ha co-wrote "Blow." She also co-wrote Britney Spears' new hit, "Till The World Ends," which enters the Hot 100 at #20. (I'll have more on that below the top 10 list.) Katy Perry has two songs in the top 10 for the second straight week. This makes up for being shut out at the Grammy Awards for the third year in a row. Perry has yet to bring home a Grammy, despite six nominations. (Katy, you might want to check in with Annette Bening, a four-time Oscar bridesmaid.) Quiz Answer: There were just two collabos on last week's 50-deep Top Country Songs chart. In addition to the Aldean/Clarkson hit, there was "Me And Tennessee" by Tim McGraw & Gwyneth Paltrow. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs. 1. Lady Gaga, "Born This Way." The song logs its fourth straight week at #1. Digital sales rank: #1 (231K). 2. Cee Lo Green's "F**k You (Forget You)." The song holds at #2 for the third straight week in its 28th week on the chart. This is its fifth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (200K). 3. Rihanna, "S&M." The racy song jumps from #5 to #3 in its eighth week. This is its fourth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (178K). 4. P!nk, "F**kin' Perfect." The song holds at #4 for the second week in its 10th week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (140K). 5. Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull, "On The Floor." The song jumps from #9 to #5 in its second week. This is Lopez's seventh top five hit as a lead artist. The video aired on American Idol on March 3. Digital sales rank: #2 (223K). 6. Bruno Mars, "Grenade." The former #1 song drops from #3 to #6 in its 23rd week. This is its 15th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #11 (110K). 7. Ke$ha, "Blow." The song jumps from #11 to #7 in its seventh week. This is Ke$ha's seventh top 10 hit (counting a featured role on 3OH!3's "Blah, Blah, Blah"). Digital sales rank: #6 (164K). 8. Katy Perry featuring Kanye West, "E.T." The song holds at #8 for the second week in its fourth week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #5 (167K). 9. Enrique Iglesias featuring Ludacris & DJ Frank E, "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)." The song dips from #7 to #9 in its 15th week. This is its 11th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #20 (77K). 10. Katy Perry, "Firework." The former #1 song drops from #6 to #10 in its 20th week. This is its 18th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #13 (97K). One song drops out of the top 10 this week. "I Need A Doctor" by Dr. Dre featuring Eminem and Skylar Grey dips from #10 to #11 in its fifth week. Digital sales rank: #7 (149K). Nicki Minaj's "Moment 4 Life" (featuring Drake) jumps from #15 to #13 in its 12th week. It's Minaj's highest-charting hit to date as a lead artist, topping "Your Love," which peaked at #14. Minaj has had two bigger hits as a featured artist: Ludacris' "My Chick Bad," which reached #11, and Trey Songz' "Bottoms Up," which hit #6. "Moment 4 Life" has been #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for the past three weeks. Britney Spears' "Till The World Ends" debuts at #20. The song sold 117K copies in its first three days of release, which is about one-fourth as many as "Born This Way" sold in its first three days (448K). "Till The World Ends" is the second single from Spears' upcoming album Femme Fatale, It follows "Hold It Against Me," which debuted at #1 in January. (Three Dog Night, one of the top singles acts of the first half of the 1970s, released a song called "Til The World Ends" in 1975. It peaked at a tepid #32. Worse, the group never returned to the Hot 100. Let's hope Spears doesn't suffer the same fate.) Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" drops from #13 to #18 in its ninth week. (The song sold 121K copies this week, which puts it at #9 on Hot Digital Songs.) Adele continues to lead The Billboard 200. But you already know that if you read this week's Chart Watch: Albums. If you missed it, here's a link. Foo Fighters' "Rope" bows at #70. It's the lead single from the band's seventh studio album, Wasting Light, which is due April 12. The band first hit the Hot 100 Airplay chart in 1995 with "This Is A Call." Dave Grohl first charted with his previous group, Nirvana, in 1991 with the classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Willow's "Whip My Hair" re-enters the Hot 100 at #86. In addition, her follow-up song, "21st Century Girl," bows at #99. The title of the latter entry is apt: Willow was born on Oct. 31, 2000. "Whip My Hair" peaked at #11 in October. It has sold 1,216,000 digital copies to date. Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight" sold 16K copies this week in the wake of the release of the Topher Grace movie of the same name. The zesty song, which reached #4 on the Hot 100 in November 1986, has sold 527K digital copies. "OMG" by Usher featuring will.i.am tops the 4 million mark in digital sales this week. It's Usher's first song to reach this milestone. It's will.i.am's third, if you count his Black Eyed Peas hits. Usher's 2004 smash "Yeah!" (featuring Ludacris and Lil Jon) tops the 3 million mark in paid downloads. Only two other pre-2005 releases have sold 3 million digital copies. Journey's 1981 hit "Don't Stop Believin'" has sold 4,339,000. Eminem's 2002 smash "Lose Yourself" has sold 3,478,000. The next oldest 3-million seller is "Gold Digger" by Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx, which was released in July 2005. Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" tops the 3 million mark in paid downloads in its 19th week of release. It's just a week off the pace of Ke$ha's breakthrough hit, "TiK ToK," which sold 3 million copies in 18 weeks. The Plain White T's' "Hey There Delilah" tops the 4 million mark in paid downloads this week. The poignant ballad spent two weeks at #1 in the summer of 2007. It went on to receive a Grammy nomination as Song of the Year. "No Hands" by Waka Flocka Flame featuring Roscoe and Wale tops the 2 million mark in paid downloads...Mumford & Sons' "Little Lion Man" tops the 1 million mark.

Note that the audience for radio is quite different from how it was 10-15 years ago. There are now a lot of hardcore music fans who never listen to the radio. They either rely on iPods or Internet radio stations catered to their specific taste (which to my knowledge are not tracked). Adele seems like exactly the kind of artist who appeals to that crowd (note her high percentage of digital album sales).
I am personally a perfect example of that. Just about the only time I hear a radio station is in a doctor's waiting room.

but, on the other hand, I'm personally an example of a radio listener: I only listen to radio, either at home, work, on the car, or on my phone.

People forget that Olivia was a hit making machine in her time! Interestingly her last top 5, came as Holiday was climbing the charts. Of course, it was several months later that M got her first top 5 with Lucky Star.

^ True, true.... but, on the other hand, I'm personally an example of a radio listener: I only listen to radio, either at home, work, on the car, or on my phone. Interesting - can I ask why you want to spend 25% of your music time listening to advertisements? I have like 6 radio stations I listen to (when there is advertisement in one, I change to the other). Also, I like the radio experience, and I am willing to listen to advertisement when I have to.

nothing to be happy over lol i think its fine for a 2nd single that didnt have any pop airplay that would really increase digital sales. i was worried itd never cross 600k a few months ago, so seeing it cross 700k it great.

IGF SO CLOSE TO 7 MILLION
Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are unquestionably the two biggest recording stars to come out of American Idol. They have always had distinct identities: Clarkson is the pop dynamo; Underwood, the country superstar. But now Clarkson is moving in on Underwood's turf. Clarkson last week landed her first #1 hit on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart as the featured artist on Jason Aldean's "Don't You Wanna Stay." Clarkson had previously climbed as high as #2 on the country chart in September 2007 as Reba McEntire's duet partner on a remake of Clarkson's 2005 pop hit "Because Of You."
Both are so talented, its cool to see both have done some damage on each other's formats

I'm kind of floored at how much of a hit this song apparently is; this will be in the top 10 in two more weeks (maybe just one) at the current rate it's going. I guess it's the rhythmic play, but I wasn't aware that it was doing so strong anywhere...total silent hit.
