Not that "I Know It Hurts" was the bad choice that SOME people claimed it to be, but I feel like "Isolation" paved the way for a song like this to do well.

didn't u read the thread for I Know It Hurts? I stated that the song is an INTERNATIONAL single. Dude...sometimes I don't get you. What I said demonstrates that I did read your entire thread. The whole discussion was based around a lot of people arguing over whether or not we were rooting for IKIH to be the U.S. single. All I did here was acknowledge that "I Know It Hurts" would have been a good choice (in the U.S. as well), but I'm plenty happy with this choice too.

Should go top 5 on Active. What does everyone think should follow this? I would go for... "I Know It Hurts". ;)

"Wonderful Life" would be the obvious choice if they're continuing in the trajectory of going less metal with each single. "I Know It Hurts" arguably is the most active rock radio-friendly song left on the album. "Show Me A Sign", "Slip To The Void", and "Words Darker Than Their Wings" would all be incredibly epic. If they were more established at rock radio, they could probably get away with one of those. "Wings" without a radio edit would be so badass, but they would probably only be able to get away with something like that as the lead single off the next album.

I judged hastily that "i know it hurts" is not as good as this one, but after listening to it again again, i really liked it, definitely a heavier song that would fit perfectly on active rock radio, although ghost of days gone by is a fine choice too, hopefully i know it hurts or wonderful life will be the 3rd single in the US.

You see that, Matt? "I Know It Hurts" just won over another person on its bandwagon. It's only a matter of time before you're all alone.

^ I have nothing really against that song I just think it's really a generic standout on the album. There are edgier and more interesting songs on the album.

I think it's awesome that Alter Bridge is arguably promoting themselves better than Wind-Up or Universal ever did.

My local Active Rock station just added this to their playlist, and it sounds just as great on the airwaves as it does wearing a headset.
I imagine many heavy rock/semi-metal purists, upon hearing the opening minute of the song, may likely feel immediately dismissive towards the track, thinking "Oh great, here we go.....yet another Adult Contemporary-polished, melodic chunk of fluff trying to pass on as heavy rock fodder!" If they aren't narrow-minded to the point of turning the dial to assume the rest of the track will be equally as melodic and breezy, I bet many felt blindsided.
What makes this most impressive to me, above all else, is how it is able to effortlessly counterbalance minor tonality with a soaring, cathartic melody. Too frequently the two just aren't reconciled in format singles these days. It's all brooding minor-stuck-on-parking-brake melodrama to the breaking point or overly harmonic overdubs that wash out any residue of edge like bleach. The band understands these elements can work together seamlessly, and it just makes for a song that stands out instantaneously.
I also love that the song opens up gently but closes out with a thunderclap, without either feeling shoehorned in the song. If this song were arranged more like a parabola like your typical somewhere-between-mid-tempo-and-power-ballad archetype, it would have a greatly diminished impression, I can guarantee. When you have a number pensively reflecting on mortality in gazing back to summer days gazing up at the stars fearlessly, it would feel absolutely awkward ending with a mild breath of a respite. You need a flame thrower of a close. Especially when this is the track directly following "Isolation" on the album.

I think it's awesome that Alter Bridge is arguably promoting themselves better than Wind-Up or Universal ever did. They are, without a doubt. I can't begin to imagine how excruciating it has been for them to transcend the ghosts of Creed, in particular. It is a tough act to follow. But they understand that, when you let the music do the talking and are committed to your craft democratically as a group, you can surmount even the most thickest fogs of assumptions and dismissals. What's most impressive is that they've not only made no concessions.......they've consistently strived to develop their artistry in ways that would overwhelm most other established bands of their genre. Kennedy is now trying his hand at lead guitar on numerous tracks. They produced their first chart-topper off their heaviest single yet. They have stretched themselves topically. And so forth. It would be wise for other bands to take it from their experience if they have their sights set out for the long haul.........and understand that the music, itself, is the unparalleled best means of promotion. Marketing is just bells and whistles, when you get right down to it. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

This better just be a bump in the road:
15 17 ALTER BRIDGE Ghost Of Days Gone B... 847 870 -23 2.021
This song deserves to hit the top 10 at the bare minimum, and the fact that it's already moving backwards in spins and in chart positioning is very troubling. I hate to say that I think "I Know It Hurts" would have charted better as the second single, but that's starting to look like the case. Still, from a quality standpoint, this song is among the most deserving of success on the album and on the current chart, and hopefully it will start regaining spins again soon.
