uhm I don't want to argue or anything, it's a matter of personal preference, whether you like the way the label handles the single or not. If I am the press, of course I must dig something to write and "complain" and of course the "despo issue" will be brought up to the table. If I am Rih's label I will do what they are doing right now. period.

Let's not forget that Katy's people took the Kanye version of E.T. off iTunes for a while to raise the originals sales and then put the remix back on. So, if Rihanna wants to release a remix to get S&M to #1 I say more power to you! pretty much this. It's all a numbers game. If this is what it takes to get to #1, then that's great! You all get a Britney/Rihanna collaboration out of it. Katy got Kanye, which gave E.T. the xtra oomph it needed to get to #1. It's all the same, really. I wish everyone was as aggressive as these two have been lately. I'm sure Katy's label has some unique angles to spin for LFN once they release that. Gaga might pull some tricks too, later on down the road. again, it's just a numbers game. And they're playing it well. IA. Up until this week, people have been flooding the S&M thread complaining about how she wasted the potential it had to be #1 and her label not doing anything to promote or support it....and it's always refreshing to see pop divas teaming up for a single regardless. I don't think people even expected this remix to really happen. It's big.

If Katy keeps gaining at this pace, there won't be any airplay difference between "E.T." and "S&M" by next week's Hot 100, so it will all come down to sales and streaming.

Anybody know what the peak impressions where for Katy's CG, TD, and Firework?
Still amazed at how this 4th single is doing for her.

^They all topped 100 million at their peak in BDS numbers- "Firework" reached around 125 million at least (it dipped 1% to 124.5m the week it returned to No. 1 on the Hot 100).

The way I interpret this whole eleventh-hour remix promotional gambit debate is that I feel CHR/Pop is becoming increasingly like the Country radio format, in that the Country format is the most notorious for record label chutzpah. For those of you who haven't observed how the Country format dialog often functions, it is often much easier to predict and pick #1 singles like the Beltway media picks our presidents, in that (with exceptions here and there, depending on how established the artist is, if an artist pushes a particularly risky track for radio consideration, etc.) they largely seem to ascend in an assembly line style, and often only deviate from that queue if mainly 1) the artist is a present superstar and the label fears not pushing the track to a massive chart debut entry would be perceived as a sign of weakness among competing labels, or 2) one label is simultaneously pushing multiple artists signed to their roster at close proximity of each other on the chart, so might accelerate one single while holding the other back so to "wait for the opportune moment". From each country music artist's touring and television performance schedule, to their radio tour highlights for the week, to timing a featured appearance on a keynote country music countdown program within the week the label perceives the single will complete its trajectory to #1, to just about anything you can think of in each artist's datebook...............country music labels have long been incomparably competitive and compulsive in terms of chart rivalry. I feel, however, record label politics are trending remarkably closer to those in Nashville on the CHR/Pop format. I'm not quite convinced the trend has caught on nearly as much elsewhere, in that I perceive CHR/Rhythmic, for instance, as closest to an oligopoly in that, as of late, it's quite common to see the #1 single separated by 1500 spins or more from the runner-up, and a mere 2000 spin approximate separates the #11 single from the #40 single. The Adult Top 40 was very much a dynasty throughout much of the early-to-mid portion of the previous decade also, although it has loosened up quite a bit since then. Desperation? Music business? Hardly an odd couple! Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus i don't understand a word you just said.

This week may be one of the closest weeks this year in terms of the point differential between the number one and number two songs. If downloads of S&M keep growing and E.T.'s airplay continues at this incredible pace, a handful of points will just barely push one song over the top. As much as I would LOOOOVVVVEEEE S&M to reach number one this week, the sheer anticipation factor is entertaining enough.

I love how the stans come out of the woodwork to split hairs. SRS. Katy Parry is JUST as guilty of THROWING Kanye West on "E.T." and calling it a remix and releasing that as the single version. Whether or not an artist switches up the single the first week or week 20, it's a move to appeal to a bigger audience.
If anything, to me, throwing Kanye West on "E.T." is the desperate move... Kanye West? And his raps are whack. I feel that the "E.T." remix is a form of chart manipulation because the fans already bought E.T. as a promo when the album came out and the video took forever to come out. That's besides the fact that Kanye West adds nothing to the song and never seems to do anything solid. He's constantly on several songs that are minor hits and his rhymes are weak. PERSONALLY, he's an irritation, but he serves his purpose. There've been 3 parties i've been to recently that i specifically recall the ORIGINAL version of E.T. being played and that got a huge response. I believe if the remix had been played it would have gotten the same reaction. Again, Kanye West gets lost.
Making the remix the official single is tacky to me. The original was fine. That's my preference. That's why i PREFER a remix like S&M that's just fun for a few weeks and serves its purpose. I don't feel the KAnye West version of "E.T." is the memorable one to be listed as the single, he's an afterthought.
BTW i don't feel Britney should be credited on the S&M chart. (That's like Styles P. and Jadakiss getting credit for "We Belong Together" when that remix was hott for a few weeks) As well, Britney brings nothing to the song, it's FLAWLESS as it is. She's just for fun VS Kanye West who takes every rhyme like it's his gospel. Again, that's why I like the S&M remix better because it's not trying to say "This is the definitive version of the song"
So either way you feel about it, it's still not a cheap gimmick, it's just strategy to APPEAL TO A LARGER AUDIENCE and keep the song going. How is this just now an issue?
The cattiness reminds me of a post i saw a month ago when a J.Lo was complaining about how it wasn't fair that "E.T" has 2 versions out while other songs only have one...............
...................
That's the kind of ridiculous and uneducated statements that need to be kept to a stans self.
With S&M, this is one of the smartest moves i've seen recently. And it all happened so fast. That's how you do it. S&M IS the #1 song in the country, the charts just aren't showing it. Same way Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance #2 for weeks was clearly the most popular song. AS WELL when her "Paparazzi" was stuck at #6 with a #1 airplay-- it just didn't line up.
MY point is, if the #1 is THAT close, DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN to get it. So many great songs were snubbed at #2. Look at all the divas-- Madonna. She should have had 3 #1's from Like a Prayer not to mention COUNTLESS singles that were so close. "Frozen" could have been #1 had they discounted the single. Janet Jackson too has had plenty of songs that could have been #1 instead of 2 or 3. JUST AS POPULAR, but they'd have that title. Mariah Carey is prob the only one that actually got all the #1's she should (add or subtract a few) becasue the label at one time really went for it and you know Mimi is crazy and was like "I WANT THAT #1 sell it for $0.20!!!" Madonna should have many more US and UK #1's.
So with this past decade, with all the artists that had so much potential to get #1's AKA Britney Spears.... i say if you're THAT CLOSE, effing go for it.

How is E.T. more desperate than S&M with R&B? Your logic don't make no sense.
And just cause Mariah and her team put Loverboy for 49 cents(which didn't even hit #1) don't mean she did it for all her #1's. The only thing Mariah has done with a few of her #1's is repressing them, which I don't find anything wrong with.

It's all there. I made several statements that may be seen as conflicting because they are both sides. I feel "E.T." is more gimmicky that "S&M" remix however I think they're both great ways to take the song to the next level. Surprise surprised i'm not a psycho stan that only "allows" my fav artist to get away with everything meanwhile trashing everyone else. I'm looking at you BeYAWnce stans

@honey Tik Tok was obviously more popular than Bad Romance at the time. And IMO right now E.T. is more popular, otherwise it wouldn't be selling twice as much. S&M is ahead on both airplay/sales now though, so I think it would deserve it this week.

Oh please. Katy put Kanye on E.T. at the VERY start of its chart run - he's even in the music video.
Rihanna throws the decade's biggest female artist on her song the very week it peaks at radio.

I say get in where you fit in. Katy got #1 so what if Rihanna wants a 3rd number 1. It's not like Rihanna is gonna block Katy why can't they just both share the top spot. Katy had it last week Rihanna can have it this week or the week after. Everyone wins

Are we gonna go through the backlog and start discrediting every #1 that was partly achieved due to some promotional method too? This is a modern-day method of ensuring a peak, just as many have repressed, extensively performed, or appeared in high profile events (such as an award program/movie/commerical etc) in the past.

Whatever. Let Rihanna have her 10th #1 hit. The remix isn't my main problem with the song anyway.
I can't believe that parents are letting their kids download a song called "S&M." Or are they even aware that that is the name of it, and what the song is about? Some parents can be seriously clueless about the music their kids are listening to.
And are they really going to let them perform this on American Idol?

The only thing Mariah has done with a few of her #1's is repressing them, which I don't find anything wrong with. That's the thing, it's all subjective. There are people that consider repressing downloads, slapping a feature on a track, sales discounts, having a radio deal to get your song played on the top of every hour, etc etc as unfair chart manipulation when really it's just down the strategy. The R&B S&M remix situation is no different than the K&K E.T. remix because like honeygotmehooked said, whether the remix was added in week 1 or week 20, the point was that it gave BOTH tracks a significant boost period. The Kanye remix is the version that is selling like hotcakes regardless so no-one can even deny that Kanye hasn't been a huge benefit to E.T's success. Again, that's not a problem.

Mariah Carey is prob the only one that actually got all the #1's she should (add or subtract a few) becasue the label at one time really went for it and you know Mimi is crazy and was like "I WANT THAT #1 sell it for $0.20!!!" ... what ??? She said in 1998 that she couldn't care less about "interrupting a streak of #1s that her label wanted to keep immaculate". She wanted some of her fav songs released from the Daydream and Butterfly albums, but Sony didn't because they weren't going to be big hits and she did not agree with that. (you can read that in her interview with Vibe from 1998) ^what are u talking about? Billboard DID NOT count those free downloads. This is old news. Yes they did. That's why Mariah got to #1 the week of June 4, 2005. Otherwise she wouldn't have made it to #1 until the week of June 11th. Billboard did count those free downloads but they also made it clear that from here on in, they would no longer count free downloads towards a single's sales. The rule was changed because of what happened with WBT. That doesn't make that 1st week not legit. There was no rule that said free downloads weren't going to be counted at the time. Anyone could have done it, but they didn't. Billboard then changed its rules. I don't see the big deal.
