U.K. Pop Diva Returns to #1 as Glee’s Warblers Will Be Week’s Top Debut
April 20, 2011
So far 2011 has turned out to be the year of Adele.
The U.K. pop diva’s XL/Columbia album 21 had the year’s best debut and now returns to #1 for the fifth time since coming out in February and selling 350k in its first week.
The Easter shopping week should boost the platinum-plus album to another six-figure week in sales. Meanwhile, her previous album, 19, is also climbing the charts. At this rate, next year’s Grammy race will be over sooner than the New York Mets’ season.
Based on one-day sales from those retailers still in shock at how much vinyl product they can sell, the week’s biggest debut comes from Columbia’s cottage Glee industry with Glee Cast: Glee Presents the Warblers, featuring songs performed by the show’s a cappella choir, led by star-in-the-making Darren Criss. Look for between 75-85k in sales for that.
Next highest debut in a week painfully short of them is Virgin/EMI’s Gorillaz album, The Fall, the physical/digital release of an album previously available to fan club members as a download last Christmas. The entire album was actually recorded on an iPad during an Oct. 2010 performance from the band’s last tour.
The market was up 8% vs. last week, up 16% vs. same week last year and now down just 3% year to date. In a world of bad news, consider that a ray of light.
You may now go back to programming your glowing LED computer-controlled Arcade Fire Coachella balls.

Yes! I think Glee has helped her slightly as well as Turning Tables is almost top 30 on itunes! (Adele's version). Hopefully she can do around 110-115k. ^^

Excellent for Adele, if she keeps up this consistency, 3 million is a good possibility by year-end.

She should also be consistent with Mother's Day sales... I could see people buying this as gifts as well. Go Adele!

Wonder if anyone can beat Adele for best selling album in 2011, both Billboard year-end and SoundScan.
Gaga? Beyoncé? Rebecca Black? Anyone else relevant?
Tayor is still ahead on Billboard's calendar (1.76 million), but Adele (1.12 million) is selling so much more it should easily catch Swift in three or four months.

Sony could have next week's Top 3, four of the Top 5 and six of the Top 10 as Adele's 21 surges back to #1. Here's how it looks headed into the Easter weekend:
Adele (XL/Columbia) 115-125k *Glee Cast "Glee Presents The Warblers" (Columbia) 75-85k Foo Fighters (Roswell/RCA/RMG) 65-75k Lemonade Mouth (Walt Disney) 60-70k Britney Spears (Jive/JLG) 45-50k Alison Krauss & Union Station (Rounder) 40-45k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 35-40k Justin Bieber Never Say Never (Island/IDJ) 30-35k Chris Brown (Jive/JLG) 30-35k Wiz Khalifa (Atlantic) 30-35k Jason Aldean (Broken Bow) 28-32k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 27-30k Now 37 (Capitol/EMI) 25-28k Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 24-27k Mana (Warner Music Latina) 24-27k Paul Simon (Hear Music) 24-27k
* Debut (4/21p)

The Easter bump doesn't really look big given these projected sales.

The Easter bump doesn't really look big given these projected sales. Maybe they're afraid to over-estimate it, and the numbers will go up? Hopefully?

It's good to see that Britney will stay consistent this week thanks to Easter sales. Nice to see Taylor in the projection as well after a long absence.

Oh, Adele. I don't think I'd classify her as a "pop diva," but goes to show, again, that "diva" has become a term to describe any female act.

I wonder if FF will spend more weeks in the Top10 than circus, given the low comptetition?

I wonder if FF will spend more weeks in the Top10 than circus, given the low comptetition? The album is showing some legs. It is about to re-enter the Top 10 on the I-tunes albums chart. By the way, what are the upcoming May releases? We can judge the competition this early.

Very pleasantly surprised that FF looks to stay in the Top 5 another week AND see a sales increase?! I know it's due to Easter, but still - I am not used to this! Hopefully the bigger TTWE becomes, the more likely this will have steady sales. Looks good for Single #3 as well, unless Jive and Britney make a bad decision (though I doubt that as the album is very solid, would be hard to make a terrible decision IMO).
