I think Billboard forgets that it's the SONG that's charting. All formats of the song, not the version featuring Britney Spears...
The song "S&M" was the #1 song in the country. How many times can you break down the song, not just due to features.
"Oh well, the album version would be #3 and the radio version would be #32 and the remix with a rapper would be #20 and the dance club version is #98 and the club edit is #92"
If they want to get technical then any remix should be counted as its own entity, the difference visible on the Digital Songs chart versus Digtial Tracks. Britney either should be credited, or shouldn't. This "she's credited for 2 weeks" is a misstep. It doens't matter which version of a song is the most popular, it's not going to decrease the fact that there are mulitple versions. Look at Mariah Carey. No one in the 90's went more out of their way to make sure there were distinct versions of a song. The version of "Fantasy" with ODB didn't get a credit for being that popular and ODB didn't suddenly get listed as "Fantasy featuring ODB" at #25 and Da Brat doesn't get a chart credit at #34 or something for "Always Be My Baby" depending on how popular the remix was. It seems that Billboard was trying to "give" Britney that #1. She, in my opinon "deserves" it, but the whole thing is outrageous really. If versions of a song can chart as the song becomes popular then there should be MANY artists with more credits. And versions of a popular song can be listed, as the song rises on the Hot 100, at ascending positions. "[flavor of the month rapper] has a #20 song, oh now he has a #1 song because he's listed on the remix for 2 week... now remove him from the track for the rest of the trajectory" Billboard of course refutes that by saying "The version of the song with the most points is the one that charts." Kiss my a** Either give everyone a credit or give no one a credit.
