It's about time she did more VW stuff! She hadn't done a commercial/promo ad for a while, so I was beginning to think that they parted ways with their endorsement deal. Glad to see that I was wrong. She looks beautiful, as per usual! :)

The title track to Lauren Alaina's debut album, Wildflower (to be released on 10/11/11), was originally recorded by Carrie for her Carnival Ride album, but it didn't make the cut.

Carrie didn't have a hand in writing it. She had recorded it for Carnival Ride but, as we all know, it didn't make the cut.

So is there another song on Lauren's album that Carrie did co-write? I thought that was the info that was going around before, that it was a song Carrie had co-written that was going to be on Lauren's album.

I think so, yes. Lauren has stated multiple times that a Carrie co-write is a possibility for her album. It's just not "She's A Wildflower".

Underwood Keeps Hoedown Hot

There’s a new face of Nashville’s country gal — two of them, actually — as Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert took centre stage at the Capital Hoedown Friday, showcasing two very different streams of the hot country sound.

At one end is Underwood, the former American Idol heartthrob who rocketed to fame with a freshly-polished sound straight from the factoryworks of Music City.

At the other end is Lambert, with her rough-and-ready Texas sass and raw-edged, take no prisoners attitude.

Underwood was positively buoyant, kicking into the bouncy Cowboy Casanova as more than 17,000 fans sang along with every line.

“It is so very good to be back in Ottawa, we’ve missed you guys,” Underwood beamed, breezing through Quitter, Wasted and Some Hearts.

Underwood put on her best country gal growl on Flat on the Floor, with crunchy guitars and fiddles rocking out and reaching to the rafters.

The band took a step back on the lovely Temporary Home, allowing her crystalline voice to ring out in the night, and again on her signature ballad Jesus, Take the Wheel.

“I was not one of those kids who thought they would make it, and I didn’t spend my Friday and Saturday nights trying to write songs, I spent them watching TV with my mom and dad,” she said. “Now my Friday and Saturday nights are a whole lot more interesting, because I get to hang out with you guys.”

Underwood took fans on a little trip down Idol lane, doing her best impression of current Idol judge Steven Tyler on Aerosmith’s Walk This Way, and channelling her inner Axl for G’nR’s Paradise City.

Never a bad thing to leave your fans wanting more, but if there was one complaint, it was that the headlining set clocked in at just over 60 minutes, with fans streaming home at 10 p.m.

Carrie Underwood, Miranada Lambert

Capital Hoedown, LeBreton Flats Park, Friday, Aug. 12


OTTAWA — If Carrie Underwood ever tires of Nashville, Ottawa will welcome her with open arms. At least the 17,000-plus fans who greeted last nights headliner at Capital Hoedown would embrace her.

When the country superstar, who played Scotiabank Place just over a year ago, took the stage at LeBreton Flats Park, lawn chairs were abandoned and the folks who’d been sitting in the raised VIP sections were suddenly standing on their chairs, dancing in place to tunes like the big opener Cowboy Casanova and Wasted. (The fans were eventually chased off the chairs by a Hoedown representative.)

Underwood’s not a big woman, but her rafter-shaking voice easily dominates whatever venue hosts her. The former American Idol proved that again Saturday night with tunes like Some Hearts, a big sing-a-long favourite for her Ottawa fans.

She’s also a hard-working performer who uses body language superbly to connect with the audience in a song like All-American Girl.

“It’s so nice to be back here, “said Underwood early in the concert. Of course, she did earn a special place in Ottawans hearts by marrying former Senators player Mike Fisher, who now plays with the Nashville Predators. Some Sens fans were also annoyed with Underwood, figuring she'd spirited Fisher away from Ottawa.

There was a rumour that Fisher was on hand Saturday night. (“I would be,” confided one beefy fan to me, “with a wife as pretty as that.”)

“She has the most incredible voice,” summed up audience member Melanie Hedley. “She’s a down-home country girl and she sings strong-girl songs.”

Miranda Lambert, another strong girl, blasted open her show before Underwood with her testament to self-possession, Only Prettier. She followed that up with another attitude-laden rocker, Kerosene, shouting out in the middle of the song, “Did you come to party?”

The crowd clearly had, evidenced by the woman in the front row wearing a T-shirt that proclaimed “Farmers Feed Cities” and pumping her fist joyously.

Lambert, the bangles on her wrists glittering almost as brightly as the ring on her finger (she’s married to country star Blake Shelton), also slowed things up with the lovelorn Dead Flowers.

Lovelorn song or not, Lambert still wound up spinning in a circle and shaking her head wildly at the end of the tune. Restraint isn’t one of her life goals.

She never did play Time to Get a Gun. The Fred Eaglesmith tune inadvertently sparked a minor firestorm when this reporter asked Lambert in an interview a couple of weeks ago if she meant the song to be taken literally, and she said she did.

She subsequently tweeted that the next time we chatted, we should stick to music, not guns. The tweet went viral among country music followers, with many commenting digitally and enthusiastically about the inappropriate interview questions.

Lambert made no mention of the incident during her show.

Brilliantly blue-eyed Billy Currington got a big response from the dinner-time crowd when he sang his honky-tonk hit Pretty Good at Drinkin’ Beer.

In fact, he got a much-deserved positive response for pretty much everything he sang. Although not a retro act, Currington clearly understands the worth of traditional country.

Pembroke native Jason Blaine opened the evening.


Capital Hoedown continues until Aug. 13 at LeBreton Flats Park next to the Canadian War Museum.
