Absolutely bizarre that the song that most symbolizes Mariah's temporary downfall is her only song to end up #1 for the year in sales. But, honestly, looking at that list it's clear that 2001-2005 all are extremely unrepresentative of the truly most popular song of the year.

Yah- after Billboard started allowing radio-only tracks to chart on the Hot 100, there was a brief increase in CD single releases- but then in 2001, the number of releases really started to decline. Thankfully things shook up in early 2005, with the inclusion of digital sales in the Hot 100.

2001 singles had no major impact on the market

At the time only select singles were available anyway.

The fact that Mariah Carey had the "top song of the year" only means that song sold more copies than all other songs that were made available as singles (singles market had bottomed out at this point)

This song spent 4 of its 14 weeks in the top 40 portion of the Hot 100

This song did not make the year end top 100 on the Hot 100

2001-2004 were the years where there's basically no difference between Hot 100 and the Airplay chart

Actually ""Loverboy" did finish in the top 100 for 2001- albeit, not as high as most No. 2 hits place, but... yeah, outside of the occasional CD single release for a radio hit, the Hot 100 and Hot 100 Airplay were pretty close from 2001-2004.

The real point though is the similarities between the top of the year end Hot 100 and the year end Hot 100 Airplay

Loverboy was #80 as the top selling single of the year, a product of having little to choose from at the time

The #1 single on the Single Sales Chart in 2001-2004 was often a song that wasn't even a big radio hit. Also you had singles like Destiny's Child's "Lose My Breath" which I think topped the Single Sales chart for something like 10 weeks because there were so few CD singles being released at that time.

Because Mariah is the only one who gets the benefit of discounted singles......according to theorists.

People fail to realize that discounting singles was a general practice at the time, especially at Sony who used it for several of their big acts. The market was dead and the only way to shift physical copies was to discount them. With Napster being the biggest source for downloaded music, there were very few people who were going to play a buck + for a single.

Is there an actual discussion happening here? Nobody appears to be disputing that "Loverboy" outsold all its physical CD competition in 2001, and no one appears to have lost enough perspective to think that means it was somehow the most successful single of that year; so, how did this become another Mariah Carey chart manipulation rehash, and who's foolhardy enough to make it continue down that path?
