True about "Erotica." "Justify My Love" also was limited to The Box for video airplay, but, while that track did test radio's devotion to Madge, the subject matter was not as off-putting as "Erotica," so that helped JML fare a bit better on the charts. "Erotica" managed a No. 3 peak on Radio & Records (vs. No. 9 on Billboard's Top 40 Mainstream)- but it plunged 3-19 in its 7th week on R&R, and then dropped to 30 and was out the following week.
"I Want Your Sex" was a top 10 airplay hit, but th sales is what propelled it to No. 2 on the Hot 100.

What's most shocking about GM's Faith singles is that none of them topped the chart in the UK.

I knew from the moment I heard "Erotica' that it would be an airplay disappointment, which is why I was stunned when it debuted at #2 on Hot 100 Airplay (still the record!). What I was not expecting was the varying degrees of resistance to all of the singles from the album. Despite her huge successes on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 90s, she never had another lengthy string of top 5s like in the 80s.
The first real evidence of ageism on Top 40, or the Erotica backlash?

Despite her huge successes on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 90s, she never had another lengthy string of top 5s like in the 80s. The first real evidence of ageism on Top 40, or the Erotica backlash? Keep in mind that this was her first album since the conversion to Soundscan and Broadcast Data Services for the Hot 100, which also had an effect. In the late 80's and very early '90's, there was a gap between the reported airplay and sales and the actual airplay and sales. In particular, radio stations were playing songs longer than they were reporting, since the record companies had an interest in higher chart turnover (which would presumably lead to higher chart placement and thus higher sales for newer records). With the switch to the more accurate measurements records stayed on the Hot 100 longer and higher ( more information is here). As a result fewer records climbed as high. Another factor was the increased segregation of radio formats. Starting around '91, the ebb and flow of the Top 40 radio format, which had been strong throughout most of the '80's, began a decline that didn't reverse until the end of the decade. Hip hop and rap records began to get increasing airplay that they hadn't gotten (until 1990 the number of rap songs that had gone top ten on the Hot 100 could probably be counted on one hand). And R'n'B and rap records also tended to sell more singles. Mass appeal pop, like Madonna, had a harder time (think of artists like Paula Abdul and Richard Marx who had charted regularly until this time and then had a sudden decline). So those are probably the two biggest factors as to why Madge's chart peaks were less consistently high starting with "Erotica." Under those circumstances it's pretty impressive she kept making hits for the next twenty years.

So those are probably the two biggest factors as to why Madge's chart peaks were less consistently high starting with "Erotica." Under those circumstances it's pretty impressive she kept making hits for the next twenty years. That's all true, and I think there was indeed some backlash too. You have to remember there was a lot of outrage and disgust with the Sex book, and the "Erotica" single and video only made it worse. It took her nearly two years to get past that, when the AC-leaning "I'll Remember" soared to no.2 on the Hot 100. After Truth Or Dare and "Justify My Love," then Sex and "Erotica," I think people were getting weary of that image. Not to mention she was in her mid-30s by then, which made it seem a little desperate. I think that's also why "Human Nature" stalled, but softer songs like "Take A Bow" and "You'll See" were big hits. Of course, with Ray Of Light she succesfully reinvented herself as an elder stateswoman of dance who still had the moves, which has been a nice role for her virtually ever since.

No. 2 remains the record for airplay debut, but keep in mind the Hot 100 Airplay panel was just 130 stations or so at that time. There was big anticipation, as usual at the time for new Madonna, but I think the track was just too off-putting to the average listener. Of course, not as off-putting or bizarre (for radio) as something like "Bedtime Story," but not as pop as some of her more classic material.
Back to what led to this discussion- "Judas." A big disappointment, probably one that they didn't expect (given the big-budget video), but at least they didn't waste any time pushing "The Edge of Glory" as the new single. Not sure how good it is to be three singles deep into the album before it even drops, but...

She's going to have three top 10 singles in the UK on Sunday so no harm done there
Of her current songs, the smash hit will definitely be 'Hair'.
I think overall the strategy is pretty wise but the album shouldn't had been leaked yet as the official release date is Friday (in Ireland)
And as there are millions of Gaga songs floating around as 'singles of some kind' radio stations get confused.. They won't play Judas as TEOG is the 'it' song now but will they play that either when 'Hair' comes along?

Adele has a huge lock on #1. It's gonna take something really big to take her down, and i'm not sure what that is yet. LFN is so far away yet. Who's a threat? I don't see anything.

GaGa's lastest two releases are awful. If this is an indication of the album, then it is no way even close to Fame Monster. Judas is awful, but Hair is even worse. I heard it today and it's totally not catchy.
When she was on Idol they called her "legend" when introducing her. The woman has put out a couple of albums, and she's a legend?
Beyonce's song is also not so good, not at all good on the radio.

Has "I'm into You" gone for official play yet? The video has premiered and all. It may be safe to say that it won't perform as well as "On the Floor"- but if I'm wrong, I'll say so. ;) We've seen other instances of veteran acts landing just one significant hit from an album, and then followup singles not doing much of anything.

Has "I'm into You" gone for official play yet? Pop adds date is June 14th. Idk about Rhythmic and Urban, although it's in the top 50 at both formats.

^ Lopez will fall the footsteps of Nelly, Enrique, ie acts of the early 2000's and will probably sell in the 300-350k category when all is said and done.
Not bad, but not really good.

Adelegend debuted on the Rhythmic chart this week- she's taking no prisoners.
From Billboard.com:
"Deep" concurrently bows at No. 34 on the Rhythmic airplay chart, marking a rare appearance on the survey for a song with rock elements. Having previously topped the Triple A adult alternative ranking for 14 weeks, "Deep" is just the fourth song by a solo female to have showed on Triple A and Rhythmic. The previous three charted more than a decade ago: Alanis Morissette's "Ironic" and "You Learn" (1996) and Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn" (1998).

Miley was out for 2 years when she was on and Adam was on the show a year after he was on.......Their coaches are a hit or a miss....Clearly just for Ratings....I bet next year Rebecca Black or Justin Beiber will coach them :/ wtf....Years ago they had Elton John, Gladys Night, and many other REAL artists coach them

73 rhythmic stations (at last check).
"Rolling in the Deep" is top 50 on Mediabase's rhythmic chart, too (nearing top 40).

eq, most of Billboard's airplay charts are spins-based.Hot 100 Airplay is audience-impression-based (also R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, which is comprised of Mainstream R&B and Adult R&B).
Billboard.com:
Over on the Digital Songs chart, Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" continues to roll, holding at No. 1 with 353,000 (up 20%). It's the biggest week for a digital song since Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" sold 509,000 in its second week on the list (March 5).
Speaking of Gaga, the third single from her "Born This Way" album, "The Edge of Glory," bows at No. 2 on the Digital list with 266,000. She'll likely nab another high-entry next week with "Hair," the fourth digital single to be granted a commercial release. The latter premiered in the iTunes Store on Monday, May 16.
Gaga isn't the only debut in the top 10 this week, as Enrique Iglesias' "Dirty Dancer" (with Usher featuring Lil Wayne) slinks in at No. 9 with 126,000.
Katy Perry's "E.T." slips a position to No. 3 (200,000; down 16%), Pitbull's "Give Me Everything" rises 7-4 (186,000; up 22%), Bruno Mars' "The Lazy Song" lingers at No. 5 (157,000; down 8%) and Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor" drops two to No. 6 (149,000; down 15%). The Black Eyed Peas' "Just Can't Get Enough" is up one to No. 7 (138,000; down 7%), Lady Antebellum's "Just a Kiss" descends 3-8 in its second week (128,000; down 39%) and Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now" is stationary at No. 10 (109,000; down 7%).
Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.79 million downloads, up 3% compared to last week (24.03 million) and up 11% stacked next to the comparable week of 2010 (22.28 million). Year to date track sales are at 487.16 million, up 10% compared to the same total at this point last year (444.27 million).
