It will never be upgraded. The original distributor of the album does not exist anymore

Oh, I don't expect it to- but, Universal Music owns Polydor, so if it really wanted to apply for the cert, it could, no?

Grease was originally put out by RSO?
I read somewhere once that this was the reason why there is no update past 1984

Originally, yah, but Polydor took over at some point. I'm speculating that the Olivia lawsuit could be a reason why there's been no cert update- but, that was 2006, and the album's been eligible for some time. This was the Olivia lawsuit: www.people.com/people/article/0,,1566573,00.html

Right but if the exact records of shipments are not available from RSO then there would be no way to update.
I can't remember where I saw this (it was well before 2006) but it is the reason there will never be an update. The original source no longer exists
You have to just live with speculation
8x through 1984 6x dince 1991
1984-1991=?

That could be- but you'd think that someone would have kept throse records somewhere and handed them over to Polydor.
Speaking of speculation, was the 8 million cert for 4 millionx2, or 8 million? I'd think it's shipped at least as much as Saturday Night Fever- even more, as it's been a lot more successful in the SoundScan era than SNF.

Could we get Soundscan totals for the following soundtracks? Some are pre-SS, but I thought there might be Soundscan figures out there anyway. Gone With The Wind (Rhino release if it's possible to get a specific record company's release SS numbers.) The Wizard Of Oz (Rhino release) Mary Poppins Sleeping Beauty Titanic Back To Titanic Enchanted (2007) Tangled The Princess And The Frog Chicago (2002) Hairspray Dreamgirls Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas The Pagemaster Babe The Sound Of Music Please and thank you.

I read a while ago that any of us can ask for a record to be certified, as long as we pay for it. Is that true?

The RIAA conducts the audit with, I'm guessing, paperwork that contains shipment information. How we gonna get hold of all that?

It will never be upgraded. The original distributor of the album does not exist anymore The album is still being made and sold. It easily could be re-certified.

The current label would just have to add the shipments since the last cert/RSO folded to the 8 million it was certified for when figuring out what certification level to apply for.

Is that 8 million 7.5 million or 8.4 million? There is no way to know?

Is that 8 million 7.5 million or 8.4 million? There is no way to know? That 8 million is 8 million. Stop being purposely difficult AS ALWAYS. It's beyond tired at this point.

The point is, the records of those shipments DO NOT EXIST
This is why there has not been an update in 27 years

Simply put
A certifcation is an audit of the books (regarding shipments)
You can't do an audit of the books when there are no books
Hope that clears it up for some folks

The company that would have had these records DOES NOT EXIST.
Hope that is clear
I saw this on a music news show once - so unfortunately I can't prove it - nor do I have the desire to
Mr Areyoureadytojump sir
Do you have a better answer?

I thought it was too weird to be true, thanks (and thanks areyoureadytojump) But we should be allowed to ask for a certification and pay for it, while RIAA would have to contact the record company and ask them the papers to see if our request could be fulfilled or not

Pre-84 this was a double length album so 8xp = 4 million another 6 million or so since 1991 Maybe another 5 or 6 million between 1984 and 1991 and you likely have 15 million for this album

The ever-popular "No comment" from Universal- yah, something's definitely up there.
And, yeah, I hadn't thought about how Saturday Night Fever also was an RSO release, originally.

Some time after Pocahontas I reached a period of "too cool for Disney" phase (I have since returned to right track #disneyrocks), so I never really paid attention to the last four movies on the list. It is interesting to see the Tarzan soundtrack outselling the other three combined. Was "You'll Be In My Heart" that big a hit? Over In Asia, it's pretty much on par with "True To Your Heart" and "Go The Distance" (I don't remember any hit from Hunchback).
Oh, the numbers are much appreciated, btw.

There was a second hit from the Tarzan soundtrack which may have helped its sales some, too. Granted, it was "just" top 10 on AC, but still.
"You'll Be in My Heart" peaked similarly to "Go the Distance" on the Hot 100, and both peaked at no. 1 at AC, though Collins' track may have been more successful., overall. (FYI- Collins' track won the Oscar, whereas "Go the Distance" did not). Also, Tarzan was the biggest hit of those four movies- $171 million in USA and Canada, compared to $120.6m for Mulan, $100m for Hunchback, $99m for Hercules.

Ah yes, the grosses of the movies may have explained it. Still, the ratio does seem much larger for the soundtrack sales. Perhaps the release period (around the turn of the century, when sales were at their peak) might've helped too. Or maybe the movie just interpolated the music in a much better way than the other three. I did catch up on Mulan and Hercules on video, and they didn't do anything special with the music, if I remember correctly. Maybe it's time to catch up on this one.

^I never saw Hunchback of Notre Dame, but Mulan and Hercules were fine.
These were the airplay/sales stats for the three main singles from those three movies:
* All 4 One, "Someday" (from The Hunchback of Notre Dame): Did Not Chart on Hot 100 Airplay/No. 15 Sales * Michael Bolton, "Go the Distance" (from Hercules): No. 62 Hot 100 Airplay/No. 16 Sales * 98 Degrees/Stevie Wonder, "True to Your Heart" (from Mulan): Did Not Chart on Hot 100 Airplay/No Commercial Single (Note; Christina Aguilera's "Reflection" reached the top 20 at AC radio- no commercial single release) * Phil Collins, "You'll Be In My Heart" (from Tarzan): No. 50 Hot 100 Airplay/No. 9 Sales
Note: Collins' single charted when the Hot 100 Airplay panel expanded to include all formats
