Another great thread, thanks a lot! Hopefully I'll find the sales for some of my favorite movies' soundtracks btw, I love to collect movie soundtrack, though I only have around 50 by now =/ EDIT: Here's hoping we'll get the sales for the "Kill Bill" movie soundtracks soon as this is my favorite movie ever!

Great follow-up thread, PTB. :)
Should be noted that I'm Breathless is not a soundtrack, per se. There is a separate, main Dick Tracy soundtrack. IB does contain three tracks that appear in the movie (a fourth does as well, though it's sung by a male in the film). The resst of the tracks are "inspired by" the movie/period, which would become a trend for some soundtracks thereafter.
This is a good topic, because for some acts, soundtracks are not credited to them in the SoundScan database- Evita for Madonna, The Bodyguard and The Preacher's Wife for Whitney- and these titles should be, and this bolsters their overall SoundScan sales total (the list that SoundScan maintains of the top-selling acts).
That begs the question: Which other acts' soundtracks are credited to them by Billboard and the RIAA, but do not appear in their SoundScan listing? Aside from Madonna and Whitney, Miley Cyrus immediately comes to mind (for several of the Hannah movies). Bee Gees may be another.
Waiting to Exhale, as we know, is not credited to Whitney by any outlet, as she contains just three of the 16 tracks, and the album contains top 10 hits from other acts. 8 Mile, surprisingly, isn't credited to Eminem, as he appears on four of the 16 tracks. Joel Whitburn used to credit Olivia Newton-John with Grease, but she only appears on five of the 20 or so tracks.

imo, you can't consider a soundtrack as an artist's album when the artist doesn't have at least half of the tracks on the record, but as my opinion doesn't count for nothing... lol

Starting with everyone's favorite Disney movie soundtracks. :) The Little Mermaid - 1,504,349 Beauty and the Beast - 2,214,305 Aladdin - 2,480,651 The Lion King - 7,790,844 Pocahontas - 2,349,251 Of those only The Little Mermaid Soundtrack was released Pre-Soundscan, and apparently (according to wikipedia) it has been certified 6x Platinum. That's why I find it very odd, that two of the Disney must have Soundtracks (Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin) have sold so little compared to the other two (The Little Mermaid and The Lion King). Or does Beauty and the Beast & Aladdin soundtracks had other sales not tracked by Soundscan???? But that wouldn't make up for the 4-5 million difference they have with those other two.

I should have said "unsurprisingly" for Eminem- 4/16 tracks is just 25% of the album.
The RIAA also does not credit 50 Cent with the Get Rich or Die Tryin' album- and her appears on 15/19 tracks- weird.
Who's That Girl also does not appear under Madonna in the SoundScan database- but of course both the RIAA and Billboard credid it to her (she's on 4/9 tracks).
Both Beauty and the Beast and Aladddin were released during the SS era. The Lion King was the bigger box office hit among those three titles- and its album chart performance was much bigger than those two, as well.

I'm sure Disney had many outlets that were not tracked by Soundscan in the early 90s. You used to find those soundtracks at toy stores, grocery stores and other specialty shops.

^That is true, PTB. And the estimating early on was not as complete as it became through the years (as the coverage was 55%-60%).
I had a list of running list of acts with Billboard/RIAA soundtrack credits, when they did not appear on every single track. As a summation, here are some notables (a few already mentioned). Bette Midler has had a few soundtracks, but she's appeared on all of the non-instrumental tracks for The Rose and Beaches.
For some odd reason, the RIAA credited Barbra Streisadn with The Mirror Has two Faces- she only sang on two tracks.
Bee Gees Saturday Night Fever (6/17 tracks) Stayin' Alive (6/12)
Whitney Houston The Bodyguard (6/12) The Preacher's Wife (14/15)
Madonna Who's That Girl (4/9) Evita (20/31)
Olivia Newton-John Xxanadu (6/10) Two of a Kind (4/10)
Prince Graffiti Bridge (12/17)

^Ha I knew that- for some reason, I had 13 in my head (probably because the non-U.S. release has a 13th track). Corrected.

if i remember right, Soundscan, RIAA and Billboard credit soumdtracks to artists if their total track TIME is more than half of the album overall time (not number of tracks but length of the tracks)

The Hannah Montana Movie soundtrack is under Miley Cyrus in the Pop Diva thread. It's also copied and pasted earlier in this thread. I wonder if whether or not soundtrack Soundscan numbers get credited to particular artists or not depends on the whether or not the label credits that artist for the soundtrack.

If the act appears on every track of an album, it's a no-brainer and it would appear in that act's listing in SoundScan. For instance, as Mimi Carey was on every track, Glitter functioned pretty much as a regular Mimi album (while being 80s-influenced with several of the tracks, it followed the Mimi album formula we've seen since Butterfly). And, her name appeared on the Billboard albums chart. For stuff like The Bodyguard, The Preacher's Wife and Evita, the acts' names did not appear on the albums chart, but the RIAA rightfully credited them with the albums, and Billboard regards them as those acts' albums when discussing histories and tallies.

This is probably eligible for 20x Platinum by now. It's last cert was 8x Platinum on 11/07/84, there's over 6 years of sales/shipments between that cert and SoundScan, an since SoundScan stating tracking sales it has sold 5.9 million not counting record club sales.

'The Sound of Music' is in the same boat I believe. That's another one that may be eligible for around 20x Platinum.

The thing about Grease is that on vinyl, it was a double album. Regardless, though, of how the RIAA certified it, it definitely is due for some major upgrade. Some years ago, didn't Olivia Newton-John sue for royalties that she had not received?
