Which songs will rule the summer? By Korina Lopez, USA TODAY Summertime is fun time, which means the season's theme songs should be easy, breezy and and relatable. USA TODAY asks a few radio programmers and chart watchers for their musical forecasts. SUREFIRE SCORCHERSKaty Perry,Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)Perry's latest sits on the opposite end of the emotional spectrum. She ruled last summer with lighthearted jam California Gurls, and she's ready to hold court again with T.G.I.F. "Perry is unstoppable right now. And this song is the musical version of The Hangover," says Mike Mullaney, music director at WBMX-FM in Boston. "It's the one you hope your teenage daughter doesn't live up to." The track has all the hooks of a party song: "Got drunk, danced on tabletops, streaking, skinny-dipping," says Steve Davis, program director of WIAD-FM in Washington. "It's risky." The hook: "T.G.I.F., T.G.I.F.,T.G.I.F.,T.G.I.F. …" Adele, Someone Like YouSophomore album 21 thundered up the charts, holding the No. 1 spot in Billboard for 10 non-consecutive weeks. "Her first single, Rolling in the Deep, is huge," says Marc Hilsenrath, research director at WPLJ-FM in New York. "Her second single, Someone Like You, is a romantic ballad, and that whole album is reacting with listeners. Those two songs will be the one-two punch that will carry her through the summer." The British songbird's central theme of heartache doesn't fit the feel-good vibe that drives a summer anthem, but that doesn't matter. "Her music isn't summery, it's transcendent," says Keith Caulfield, Billboard's associate director of charts/retail. "We're going to hear about Adele the whole year, and we're going to see her at the Grammys. That's totally what's going to happen." The hook: "Nevermind, I'll find someone like you. I wish you nothing but the best." Nicki Minaj,Super BassWith her platinum debut album, Pink Friday, Minaj is the reigning queen of rap. "Super Bass is shaping up to be her biggest solo hit. It's fun, it's up-tempo," says Caulfield. "This could break her to a widespread mainstream." The hook: "Can't you hear that boom badoom boom, boom badoom boom … He's got that super bass." Lady Gaga,The Edge of GlorySummer wouldn't be complete without the lady herself, whose tireless penchant for self-promotion has made her unavoidable of late. "She's the one to beat," says Kenny King, operations manager at MIX 107.3 and 105.9 The EDGE in Washington. "She's bulletproof at the moment." New single Edge of Glory, which features the late Clarence Clemons on sax, is power pop that's destined for the dance floor. "It has the most mass appeal of any song she's ever released," Hilsenrath says. "It's upbeat, it's got a killer hook. She introduced it on the American Idol finale, which was perfect timing. This could be her biggest hit so far." The hook: "I'm on the edge of glory, and I'm hanging on a moment with you." OTHER SONGS at fever pitch this summer Coldplay,Every Teardrop Is a WaterfallCan the rock band reclaim its supergroup status? First single Teardrop jumped from No. 28 to No. 3 on USA TODAY's adult-alternative airplay chart in a week. Despite what the title implies, it's an upbeat tune. "It's happy, like Viva la Vida. We need a good pop-rock band with a big hit," says Mullaney. "These are the guys to carry that in." The hook: "Every tear, every tear, every teardrop is a waterfall." LMFAO,Party Rock AnthemThe electro hip-hop duo writes almost exclusively about partying, drinking and having fun. "Anything with 'party' and 'anthem' in the title, especially from them, is going to be a hit," says Caulfield. It's already No. 3 on Billboard's Hot 100. The hook: "Party rock is in the house tonight, everybody just have a good time." Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Give Me EverythingThe Spanish-speaking rapper has been a rising star, collaborating with heavy hitters such as Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias. "Ne-Yo sings beautiful melodies, and Pitbull is the hottest pop rapper now," says Hilsenrath. "This song is hooky with a great melody." The hook: "Give me everything tonight, for all we know we might not be here tomorrow." Bruno Mars,TheLazy SongThe R&B crooner hits upon another popular summer theme, doing nothing. "This song just makes you feel good," Hilsenrath says. The hook: "Cause today I swear I'm not doing anything, nothing at all." Keith Urban,Long Hot SummerIn a sea of pop, there are alternatives, too. "This song has a very Don Henley's Boys of Summer dark vibe," Hilsenrath says. "It has strong potential to cross over to top 40." The hook: "It's gonna be a long hot summer, we should be together." Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, Don't You Wanna Stay"Although this came out last fall, it's starting to play on the adult charts," says Mullaney. "He's a big country star, she's a big pop star. It's good when country comes and hangs out with pop-radio friends." The hook: "Don't you wanna stay here a little while? Don't you wanna hold each other tight?" Kelly Rowland,Motivation"It's sexy without being over the top," says Caulfield. "There's a playful interlude with Lil Wayne. It's a huge R&B hit, and it's making its way over to mainstream charts. Plus, she's a judge on U.K.'s X Factor, so she's getting her next moment." The hook: "Baby I'm a be your motivation, go, go, go, go, motivation." Steven Tyler, (It) Feels So GoodThe American Idol judge is back in the spotlight with a recently released memoir and new music. "I have a feeling you'll be hearing a lot of him on the radio," King says. The hook: "It feels so good, loving you, it's so good, the way you do the do." SURPRISE SPLASHESBig names aren't the only artists you'll hear in rotation this summer: Andy Grammer, Keep Your Head Up"It's got an easy beach vibe, very similar to Jason Mraz," says Hilsenrath. Foster the People, Pumped Up Kicks"This song has a funky R&B retro feel," says King. "It's a great, infectious song." Matt Nathanson, Faster"It's nice to see that a singer/songwriter can do well without having a gimmick," says Mullaney. Hot Chelle Rae, Tonight Tonight"That's a good summer song, good tempo, good vibe," says Davis. "It's a song that I'd roll down the window of my car and crank up the volume when it plays." Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Paris (Ooh La La)"It's been a long time since we had a Melissa Etheridge-level chick-rock star," says Mullaney. "Grace is so great to see live that when you see her, you become an evangelist." Mumford & Sons, The CaveThe British folk-rock band has been on a roll since its breakthrough Grammy performance with Bob Dylan. "I never would have predicted that they would have done well on top 40, but their music is so beautiful," says Hilsenrath. "How could you not love them?" Jessie J, Price TagThe British singer has landed an opening spot on Perry's tour. "It's a great hanging-by-the-pool song," says King. www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2011-06-19-summer-songs_n.htm

I hate saying it, but isn't this single kinda finished here in the US? It's certainly on its way out at radio (which never really gave it full support).

SFTTR is the next single of adele, not SLY. And T.G.I.F. is not the hook of LFN.
No way coldplay will rule the summer. The lazy song is almost done and so is Price Tag.
Who ever wrote this article does not know much.

SFTTR is the next single of adele, not SLY. Is there any actual evidence "Set Fire To The Rain" is the second single in the US? I don't see why it wouldn't be "Someone Like You".

LOL not to mention The Cave has been out since late last year/early this year, and Mumford have already moved onto their third single. Where is this idiot getting his "facts" from? Next he'll say that "Jar Of Hearts" will be this fall's sleeper ballad hit.

I don't think SLY is a "surefire scorcher". Neither do I. Releasing this in the summer is a bad idea. Of course it will do fairly well on radio as she has tons of momentum right now but still SFTTR is an obvious choice for the second single I just don't understand what they're thinking ??? SLY will kill some of her momentum.

They didn't forget "I Wanna Go"- it's not expected to fare as well as, say, TTWE.

Yeah... They don't add IWG but they add Coldplay? Because that's obviously a summer smash waiting to happen...

I actually love that Grace Potter song, but no way that's becoming a summer smash. I've been hearing that song pop up on the radio for many months.

No. It is actually a cumulative chart of Hot 100 points from 06/11 up to the chart date.
"A weekly chart tracking the most popular songs of Summer 2011 based on actual performance on the Billboard Hot 100 from chart dated June 11, 2011 through the most recent Hot 100 chart. The final ranking will be posted on September 8."
I posted more just to inform Billboard started publishing it this year.

MTV's take on the Songs Of Summer-Jul 1 2011 6:53 AM EDT 8,341 Katy Perry, Pitbull, Britney Spears Battle For Summer Jam CrownHere's our look at early contenders for 2011's Song of the Summer.By James Montgomery Well, school's out and summer is officially here, which means it's time to handicap the race for Summer Jam 2011 — the annual sweepstakes of sweaty, sex-drenched (and, this year, sax-heavy) songs that turns our nation's finest beaches and waterfront drinking establishments into an all-out battle for summer-soundtrack superiority. Last year, it was Katy Perry who emerged victorious, thanks to "California Gurls," her slinky ode to daisy dukes and melting popsicles, and she's back to defend her crown this summer with "Last Friday Night." But she'll face considerable competition from a host of big-name stars — Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj and Adele — each of whom are looking to take home the title. And even if she manages to outgun them, will Perry have enough left in the tank to takedown the suddenly sizzling Pitbull or the unstoppable LMFAO? We'll just have to wait and see. And with the action just getting under way, here's our up-to-the minute standings in the Song of the Summer Sweepstakes. If there's a song we've missed, you can let us know about it via Twitter, using the hashtag #mtvsos, or in the comments below. So without further ado, let's slather on some sunscreen and get to the jams! 1. Katy Perry, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)": She dominated the summer of 2010 with "California Gurls," and now Perry is out to make it two in a row with the ebullient "T.G.I.F.," the 183rd single from her Teenage Dream album. It currently sits at #4 on Billboard's Hot 100, and it seems like it's only a matter of time before it makes the leap to #1. Call it manifest destiny. 2. Pitbull (featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer), "Give Me Everything": Perhaps the only man standing between Perry and her second-straight Song of the Summer crown is the suddenly ubiquitous Pitbull, whose "Give Me Everything" just went to #1 on the Hot 100. It's from his well-received, club-approved Planet Pit album, and its success only validates the fact that the Miami rapper may finally be having his moment. 3. LMFAO (featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock), "Party Rock Anthem": Aptly titled hit from America's leading purveyors of sublimely stoopid odes to inebriation, "Party Rock Anthem" is basically the spiritual sequel to all of LMFAO's earlier jams (like "I'm in Miami, Bitch" and "Get Crazy," the theme from MTV's "Jersey Shore") only, you know, times one thousand. Could this be the jam that finally puts them over the top? 4. Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass": Ms. Minaj's ode to the guys with the booming systems (and she's not necessarily talking about the ones in their cars), it's breezy, sexy and unspeakably catchy — which means it's a mortal lock to be the soundtrack to a million wet T-shirt contests, only, you know, the ones featuring dudes. 5. Maroon 5 (featuring Christina Aguilera), "Moves Like Jagger": Riding high off the success of NBC's "The Voice," this jam from one-half of the judging panel debuted on the Hot 100 at #8 and seems like it could be poised to go all the way to #1. As a bonus, it's basically about guys who dance like Mick Jagger, and, really, what summertime girl doesn't want someone like that? Also, whistling! 6. Eminem and Royce Da 5'9" (featuring Bruno Mars), "Lighters": Unexpectedly bright single from Em and Royce's decidedly dark Hell: The Sequel EP, it may not seem like a logical Summer Jam, but when you hear the hook (courtesy of Bruno Mars, a guy who knows a thing or two about summertime smashes) and consider the tremendous fanbase Mr. Mathers possesses, you know this one's a contender. 7. Britney Spears, "I Wanna Go": On one hand, it's yet another club-ready jam from Ms. Spears. On the other, it's not as good as "Till the World Ends." Still, with her just-launched tour and a near-constant presence on pop radio, you can bet Britney's not going away anytime soon. 8. Enrique Iglesias (featuring Usher and Lil Wayne), "Dirty Dancer": Iglesias' "I Like It" was a sneaky runner-up to "California Gurls" in the Summer Jam 2010 sweepstakes, and "Dirty Dancer" follows a similarly clubby path. Add hard-working guest appearances from Usher and Wayne — both of whom know a thing or 13 about making hits — and "Dancer" could end up shocking the world this summer. 9. Jason Derülo, "Don't Wanna Go Home": It opens with Derülo aping the "Day-O" chant from "The Banana Boat Song," rolls on a sample of "Show Me Love" and is basically about one never-ending party. Yeah, we wouldn't bet against this one either. 10. Adele, "Rolling in the Deep": Unstoppable lead single from Adele's equally unstoppable 21 album, "Deep" has been with us for a minute now, yet there's the very real feeling that more and more people are discovering it every day. She's already conquered the Billboard charts, but now, could Adele conquer the summer too? 11. Lady Gaga, "The Edge of Glory": Not the most conventional choice, but given the fact that, A) It features a wailing sax solo from the late Clarence Clemons (which, when considered alongside the wailing "T.G.I.F." saxophone majesty, seems to suggest we're currently living in "the summer of sax") and B) It's from Lady Gaga. We wouldn't be surprised to see it take the Summer Jam crown. 12. David Guetta (featuring Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida), "Where Them Girls At": French DJ David Guetta continues his bid to take over the entire universe with this walloping, galloping party starter. Throw in cameos by Flo and Nicki, and you've got all the makings of a certified smash. Equally important, it takes the work out of actually inquiring about the location of females, which makes your summer approximately 75 percent easier already. 13. DJ Khaled (featuring Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne), "I'm On One": A sun-drenched ode to excess in just about every conceivable way, it's a song that sounds best when blasting out of a high-end system. It's got the superstar pedigree and the shelf life (check the ever-growing list of remixes), so who's to say Khaled can't also take home the Summer Jam crown? 14. Chris Brown, "She Ain't You": Built around a sample of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature," it's a smoove, supple jam, equally suited for those late-night make-out sessions and those hazy, lazy days of tanning. A true multipurpose Summer Jam indeed. 15. Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks": Ultra-catchy tune from the Los Angeles-based rock outfit, it's easy and breezy enough to be considered a dark-horse contender, so long as folks don't pay attention to the lyrics, which are dark indeed (it's about a kid and a gun, in case you hadn't noticed). Then again, when it comes to Summer Jams, no one actually listens to the lyrics, do they? www.mtv.com/news/articles/1666723/katy-perry-britney-spears-song-of-summer.jhtml

Wow they're considering Foster The People? I like that song a lot, but I don't know if it'll take off here... especially as a "Summer jam".

…" Katy Perry - Last Friday night!!! >>>>>>>>!!

"Party Rock Anthem" jumps ahead of "Rolling in the Deep" to top the latest Billboard's "Summer Songs" update.
There are still some weeks left, but it seems like LMFAO has the song of the summer on lock (as far Billboard is concerned).

Doesn't Billboard count summer as June 1 to August 31 as opposed to June 21 to September 23? Or do the dates mean sales/airplay that fall in between those dates rather than Hot 100 charts that fall between those dates?

In the beginning of this summer I was very excited when it came to music, certian there's a lot of good to come this year. one summer later, and I'm very disappointed.
