In 1977, Tom Robinson was best known for his cheesy debut single "2-4-6-8 Motorway", which was a top five hit in the UK. But in 1978 the openly gay singer released "Glad To Be Gay", a devastating critique of homophobic Britain and a rallying cry to the complacent gays who accepted it. It was controversially banned by the BBC, but the EP it featured on, Rising Free, managed to reach #18 and the song is now a classic. Frequently referenced in British popular culture and recently included on Billboard's list of "musical moments that were pivotal to the advancement and acceptance of LGBT people". Robinson changes the lyrics and adds verses to reference current gay issues to this day, and there's a great live version on the net that references HIV/AIDs.
Here's a performance from 1979.
