NBC's surprise hit The Voice has been good for its contestants, but it's been great for its judges. All four of the show's judges have hits in the top 40 on this week's Hot 100. The key contestants are also on the chart, but a little lower.
"Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon5 featuring Christina Aguilera debuts at #8. It's the fourth top 10 hit for the pop group fronted by judge Adam Levine, following "This Love," "She Will Be Loved" and "Makes Me Wonder." It's Aguilera's ninth. In addition, Blake Shelton jumps from #21 to #15 with his country crossover hit "Honey Bee" while Cee Lo Green drops from #29 to #35 with his inexhaustible "F**k You (Forget You)."
As for the contestants, Javier Colon's version of Coldplay's "Fix You" debuts at #52, Dia Frampton's version of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" bows at #54 (and her version of Kanye West's "Heartless" drops from #57 to #82 in its third week), Vicci Martinez's version of Florence + the Machine's "Dog Days Are Over" bows at #68 and Xenia's version of The Script's "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" debuts at #92. (Xenia isn't among the Final 4 contestants, but Beverly McClellan, who is, doesn't appear on the chart this week.)
"Moves Like Jagger" is the second top 10 hit in 18 months that name-checks Mick Jagger. Ke$ha's "TiK ToK" was the first. Both references are highly flattering: He was depicted as a hottie in Ke$ha's song and as a classic mover in the Maroon5 smash. Even so, I suspect he'd trade the flattery for a hit of his own. Jagger hasn't appeared in the top 40 on the Hot 100 since January 1990, when the Rolling Stones' "Rock And A Hard Place" peaked at #23.
Two other songs on this week's Hot 100 have iconic figures in their titles. The others are Mac Miller's "Donald Trump" and "John" by Lil Wayne featuring Rick Ross (which contains the line, "If I die today, remember me like John Lennon").
"Moves Like Jagger" is easily Maroon5's biggest collaboration to date, surpassing "If I Never See Your Face Again," a 2008 teaming with Rihanna which reached #51. Aguilera has had better luck with collabos, having topped the chart with "Lady Marmalade," a 2001 all-star event with Lil' Kim, Mya and P!nk. Aguilera has also made the top 20 with collabos with Ricky Martin ("Nobody Wants To Be Lonely") and Lil' Kim ("Can't Hold Us Down").
Both Maroon5 and Aguilera won the Grammy for Best New Artist (for 2004 and 1999, respectively). This marks the first time that two former Best New Artist winners have collaborated on a Hot 100 hit. There was one previous case in which a past Best New Artist winner sang an unbilled backing vocal on a hit by an act that went on to win in the category. In February 1995, Hootie & the Blowfish reached the top 10 with "Let Her Cry," which featured David Crosby. Crosby had shared the Best New Artist award for 1969 as a member of the iconic trio Crosby, Stills & Nash. Hootie won for 1995.
Maroon5 has a second hit climbing this week's chart. "Never Gonna Leave This Bed" jumps from #62 to #56. And Levine is featured on yet a third song, Gym Class Heroes' "Stereo Hearts," which drops from #85 to #87.
Pitbull's "Give Me Everything" (featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer) steps up to #1 after spending four straight weeks at #2. It's the first #1 for all of the participants except Ne-Yo, who previously topped the chart on his own in March 2006 with "So Sick."
"Give Me Everything" spent three weeks at #1 in the U.K. in May and June. It's the first collabo to reach #1 in both countries since "What's My Name" by Rihanna featuring Drake. Also, "Give Me Everything" tops the 2 million mark in U.S. digital sales this week. It's Pitbull's sixth song (combining lead and featured performances) to reach this plateau.
Did you notice that Pitbull had collabos on last week's Hot 100 with both the husband and the wife of one of America's top musical couples? Pitbull was featured on Jennifer Lopez's smash "On The Floor," which was #12 last week. And Pitbull featured J.Lo's husband Marc Anthony on his own release "Rain Over Me," which debuted at #75. Alas, "Rain Over Me" drops off the chart this week.
Pitbull has another song on this week's Hot 100. "Shake Senora" (featuring T-Pain & Sean Paul) debuts at #69.
Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" slips to #2, ending a seven-week run at #1. The song tops 4 million in digital sales this week. It's the second hit by a British female artist to reach this plateau. Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" has sold 4,183,000 copies since its release in 2008.
Billboard's Gary Trust points out that "Rolling In The Deep" has reached #1 on all four pop-oriented radio playlists: Mainstream Top 40, Adult Contemporary, Adult Top 40 and "Triple A" (adult album alternative). It's only the second song to reach #1 on all four of these surveys. The first: Jason Mraz's 2008 smash "I'm Yours." (Oddly, given the breadth of its radio exposure, "I'm Yours" never reached #1 on the Hot 100. It petered out at #6.)
Lil Wayne's "How To Love" jumps from #13 to #10 in its fifth week. It's the rapper's 15th top 10 hit, but only his second on which he doesn't have any billed collaborators. His was 2008's "A Milli."
Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs.
1. Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer, "Give Me Everything." The song jumps from #2 to #1 in its 13th week on the chart. This is its eighth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (187K).
2. Adele, "Rolling In The Deep." The song dips from #1 to #2 in its 25th week on the chart. This is its 13th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #5 (170K).
3. LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock, "Party Rock Anthem." The song holds at #3 for the third week in its 14th week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (212K).
4. Katy Perry, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)." The song holds at #4 for the second week in its fifth week on the chart. It's Perry's eighth top 10 hit. Digital sales rank: #1 (226K).
5. Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass." The song jumps from #8 to #5 in its ninth week on the chart. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #6 (169K).
6. Lady Gaga, "The Edge Of Glory." The song holds at #6 for the third week in its seventh week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #7 (149K).
7. Katy Perry featuring Kanye West, "E.T." The former #1 smash drops from #5 to #7 in its 20th week on the chart. This is its 18th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #13 (105K).
8. Maroon5 featuring Christina Aguilera, "Moves Like Jagger." The song debuts at #8. It's the fourth top 10 hit for Maroon 5; the ninth for Aguilera. Digital sales rank: #2 (213K).
9. Bruno Mars, "The Lazy Song." The song holds at #9 for the second week in its 18th week on the chart. This is its 10th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #12 (107K).
10. Lil Wayne, "How To Love." The song jumps from #13 to #10 in its fifth week on the chart. It's Lil Wayne's 15th top 10 hit. Digital sales rank: #10 (130K).
Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week. Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" drops from #7 to #11 in its 12th week. Digital sales rank: #8 (141K). Lupe Fiasco's "The Show Goes On" drops from #10 to #12 in its 26th week. Digital sales rank: #16 (95K).
Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight Tonight" jumps from #20 to #13 in its 11th week. Digital sales rank: #9 (137K)..."Who Says" by Selena Gomez & the Scene jumps from #22 to #21 in its 15th week. The act's new song, "Love You Like A Love Song," debuts at #72.
Britney Spears' "I Wanna Go" vaults from #89 to #29 in its third week on the chart..."Lighters" by Bad Meets Evil featuring Bruno Mars drops from #16 to #36 in its second week.
Beyonce's "Best Thing I Never Had" jumps from #71 to #58 in its fourth week. Her earlier release "Run The World (Girls)" drops from #78 to #84 in its 10th week. I think the idea was to have simultaneous smashes like B did last time out with "If I Were A Boy" and "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)." Instead, they have a muddle, with "Best Thing" starting to see daylight...It's a similar story with Rihanna. "California King Bed" holds at #53. "Man Down" inches up from #61 to #59. I think I'd rather have one big hit than two middling hits.
Nicole Scherzinger's "Right There" jumps from #73 to #62 in its sixth week... "Next To You" by Chris Brown featuring Justin Bieber re-enters the chart at #94. The song debuted and peaked (so far, at least) at #26 in April... "So In Love" by Jill Scott featuring Anthony Hamilton debuts at #97. Scott's album enters The Billboard 200 at #1 this week. Train's "Save Me, San Francisco" debuts at #98. It's the title track to an album that has been out for 20 months...Shania Twain's "Today Is Your Day" had a bad second week. It dropped from #66 completely off the chart. Well, she said "Today Is Your Day." She didn't say anything about tomorrow.
Bruno Mars' "The Lazy Song" tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. It's his fifth 2 million-seller, combining lead and featured performances.
Until this week, Jason Aldean was tied with Johnny Cash and Brad Paisley as the male solo country artist with the most digital million-sellers. Each had three. But two more Aldean titles ("Dirt Road Anthem" and "My Kinda Party") top the 1 million mark this week, pushing Aldean firmly into the lead. Aldean's best-selling hits are "Big Green Tractor" (1,754,000) and "She's Country" (1,612,000), which happen to be the top two sellers by any male solo country artist. Aldean's third best-seller is "Don't You Wanna Stay," featuring Kelly Clarkson, which is up to 1,396,000.
Five more songs top the 1 million mark this week: Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass," Lady Gaga's "The Edge Of Glory," The Script's "For The First Time," Sara Evans' "A Little Bit Stronger" and Kenny Chesney's "Somewhere With You."
