While Kate has released some bizarre singles over the years, this one might take the cake. It peaked at #23 in the UK in November 1986 as a single from her greatest hits collection The Whole Story. This remains one of my favorite Kate Bush singles. It also has a wonderful video (featuring a young Hugh Laurie) which was actually banned from Top of the Pops for being too violent, which seems ridiculous by 2011 standards. I don't think she gets enough credit for her excellent music videos. Here is an overview from Wikipedia. "The song tells a story about a secret military plan to create a sound that is horrific enough to kill people. The ending of the story is unclear, but in the music video nearly every person working on the project is killed by the horrific sound, which is personified by Bush herself as she changed from an angelic woman into a banshee (a horrifying screaming apparition of Irish lore). The song is also notable for featuring Nigel Kennedy on violin, who at one point replicates the screeching violins from Bernard Herrmann's famous scoring of the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho. At the end of the song a helicopter is heard which was taken from Pink Floyd's "The Happiest Days of our Lives" from their 1979 album, The Wall."

This is definitely interesting, but not something I regularly spin.
I think my favorite thing about this release is that Dawn French is in the video.

This is really underrated. The story she tells in the song has actually given me chills before. That combined with the amazing violin makes this one of my favourite by Kate (I say one of... I mean like top twenty. She just has so many great songs). There's a really nice 12" mix that accentuates the strings. All the Hounds Of Love singles had great b-sides too.
