Yeah, but not all top 10 hits are equal though. To me, one who had a 5 weeks #1 hit then followed up with a #90 song definitely makes a bigger impression of One Hit Wonder than someone who had a #9 hit song once. So perception is not wholly baseless or just because of faulty memory.

There has to be more one hit wonders than that. I recall William Shatner hosting a bunch of Top 100 One Hit Wonders per decade.
Also:
Did Shawn Colvin's "Mona Lisa" chart?
Wasn't "Convention '72" one of Dickie Goodman's novelty hits?
Lary Groce, who I believe once hosted a weekly PBS music show from West Virginia, may have had two other songs that charted: "Garbage", and "I Like Jersey Best."

I believe that list is inaccurate for these artists: Eddy Grant ("I Don't Wanna Dance"); Quarterflash ("Find Another Fool"); Shannon ("Give Me Tonight"); Mary Jane Girls ("All Night Long").
The VH1 list of 40 one-hit wonders from the 90's appears to be accurate:

Several of those artists on VH1 had multiple hits. The William Shatner lists are based on the perception of the people that made them.
Marky Mark, for example was in the top 10 more than once. Robbie Nevil had 2 top 10's and 5 top 40's
Just two examples of VH1 - one hit wonders
The Joel Whitburn list uses tighter criteria and actual statistics rather than perception.
Even the VH1 shows acknowledge if you watch the intros, that many of those artists had minor follow up hits but are "best remembered" for the one BIG hit.
Having followup hits means you had more than one hit.

Perception-based lists are sometimes very sketchy...A Flock Of Seagulls had a trio of top 40 hits, as did Quarterflash. And as 2m pointed out, Marky Mark and Robbie Nevil had multiple top ten singles.
I saw a one-hit wonder list once that included the Romantics' "What I Like About You." Not only was that not their only hit, it wasn't even their biggest hit! That song reached no. 49; their single "Talking In Your Sleep" (pretty memorable in its own right) shot to no. 3 in 1984. If you're not sure which song to choose, then they probably shouldn't be on a one-hit wonder list in the first place.

The Cutting Crew (VH-1 #26) had another top 10! ("I've Been in Love Before")

Everyone has their interpretation of what a "one-hit wonder" is. For me, if an act had a second hit that was top 10 or even top 20, that's not a one-hit wonder. if an act had a big top 10 and then never had another single break the top 10 or top 20, but did the top 40, I could see that as more of a one-hit wonder. If a second single failed to break the top half of the chart, even that I could see classified as a one-hit wonder. But multiple top 10s? Uh uh- even if it's just the one track that "most" people remember.

I prefer more objective criteria like the Whitburn list as opposed to the VH1 list which is based on subjective perception. I generally regard an act as a one-hit wonder if they have a Top 10 hit but no other Top 20 hits, but even then you have some acts that had a minor hit that held up really well, and it seems silly to call them a one-hit wonder.

VH1's #12 Animotion had two top ten hits (Outisde of their 'one hit' "Obsession", they had the #9 hit "Room to Move") as well as another top 40 entry "Let Him Go" as well as few more Hot 100 charters

Nah, we all mocked the VH1 list when it came out originally for being so very wrong.

yeah, I think the second one has to be at least top40. bottom half of the top100 is just way too random and insignificant.

Cutting it off at #40 seems random
What makes #40 a "hit" and #41 not?

Cutting it off at #40 seems random What makes #40 a "hit" and #41 not? I think what people are saying is that there is a certain recognition that goes with "a top 40 hit" that has been around for ages, whether it's arbitrary or not. You have to have a cut off somewhere.

That is one cutoff VH-1 has another Joel Whitburn has another You probably even have a different one
I like Joel Whitburn's definition because the only qualifier for the second single is that it charts - period.
Otherwise you could have the scenario where an artists second single is sitting at #41 and it is not called a "hit" but if it charts one place higher, it is a "hit"

A song that charts is a "hit", it might not be a very big hit but it is still a hit.
People will remember #1 alot longer than #97 but regardless, to get to #97 you still had to have some level of impact. (#1 will get you on VH1, #97 likely won't)
In the Joel Whitburn book, that is enough to classify as a "hit"

Yah, the whole "top 40" thing came from the format taking off at a certain time. Personally, I like top 50, as that's half of the chart. :) You can have a track that peaks between 41-50 and sees greater longevity and overall chart performance than something that peaks in the top 40, for instance.

Otherwise you could have the scenario where an artists second single is sitting at #41 and it is not called a "hit" but if it charts one place higher, it is a "hit" I agree with 2m. An exact example: Digital Underground had two hits, "The Humpty Dance" at no. 11 and "Kiss You Back" which reached no. 40. Haddaway reached no. 11 with "What Is Love" and then stalled at no. 41 with "Life (Everybody Needs Somebody To Love)." I'll grant you that Digital Underground, as an act, had greater impact overall but still...one artist is a one-hit wonder and the other is not because of one chart position? That's silly.

I feel kind of weird about even considering Cardigans as a one-hit wonder based on "Lovefool" - they had another 'minor' hit in the form of "My Favourite Game" - albeit that was on the Alternative/Modern Rock format, but it looks like while "Lovefool" charted on Pop, it didn't even crack the Hot 100 anyway.

Oops, I got that wrong. "First Band On The Moon" went Platinum, while "Gran Turismo" wasn't certified. I can understand why many alternative bands never released commercial singles much (Cranberries, Garbage, No Doubt) as it earned them album sales that probably would have been diminished a bit if there was a physical single available for their big hits.

Yeah I would say top 40 might be more cause top 100, the most random songs make it.
He should have included the Macarena since Los Del Rio's only other chart hit was the Christmas version of the song.

Los Del Rio actually had three chart entries, that each had their own unique catalog number- they just happened to be pretty much the same track. :) There was the Bayside Boys Mix, which initially peaked at No. 45 in 1995; that same version re-entered the Hot 100 in May 1996 and, as we know, spent 14 weeks at No. 1. Then, "Macarena (non stop) debuted in July 1996, eventually peaking at No. 23. "Macarena Christmas" closed out the "Macarena' madness in December 1996, peaking at No. 57.
So, is Los Del Rio a one-hit wonder? Technically, no- but one could get away with classifying the act as such, since one track was the essence for all three (or four) of its entries.
Also- for acts whose big hits did not have a commercial release, and only had that one major airplay hit, they would be One-Hit Wonders. As we are aware, the Hot 100 did not always include all of the biggest airplay hits at a given time.

^I listened to that dreadful "Macarena Christmas" for the first time last December. Never will I do such a thing again.
Is there any word on whether Joel is going to update the Hot Dance/Disco book? I wanted to order the 1974-2003 version on his website but it's no longer available and I'm not sure if I should wait or check out some other websites for it.
I know it's highly unlikely, but you never know.

^For that particular book, yeah, don't toss out $90+. I have it, and while it's cool, definitely not worth that or anything close to it. try sending an e-mail- surely there has to be a few copies floating around in the RR offices. :)
No current listings on eBay, from what I can see.
