Undoubtedly, the headlines will be along the lines of declaring sainthood. "First Openly Gay Artist to Hit #1, OMG, OMG, OMG", as if most people really give a damn. Unfortunately, he has zero radio presence and absolutely nothing to keep the album from plummeting next week. It's already out of the itunes top 10.

I give a damn.
The new releases charting higher right now doesn't mean they outsold his album on itunes and will be falling like a rock soon.
Bruno Mars opened with 55k and he had a huge hit or two out at time of release. I believe Katy Perry opened with 136k with 2 humongous hits on the charts. Never say never.

I understand that Lambert's fans always like to use "being gay" as the reasoning behind everything that does or does not happen. However, that doesn't change the fact that many, many people (myself included) couldn't care less whether someone is gay, straight, bi, whatever; it doesn't matter. And, you kind of proved my point, LOL. I made zero commentary on the opening numbers. I stated that there is nothing to keep the album going. Bringing up Bruno and Katy, who most definitely had hit singles and radio presence to keep their albums going past opening week, proved my point. What is there to keep this selling?

There a people who give a damn and others that don't. That's ok. And afaik most of Adam fans are aware that his numbers will be lower next week or that he doesn't have a hit single right now. But that doesn't mean they can't celebrate for a no1 album on the BB charts or that they can't hope for the best in the future..

Your theory is cracked by 1 thing. Both of those artist had MAJOR hit singles leading up to and after the release of the album to keep them afloat. Adam does deserve at least a GOLD plaque for this album.

Bought this yesterday and I LOVE it. The uptempos on this album are incredible. Shady, NCOE, Cuckoo, Trespassing, Kickin In & Pop That Lock are my favs so far. I hope he can continue to sell and get some big radio hits this time. He really deserves it.

Yeah, he doesn't have a hit to help next week, but the video will be out soon, he'll have to play catch up. RCA messed up that lead single, hope they get NCOE going soon. I wonder if he'll debut #1 in any other countries? Finland? Hungary? NZ? Hoping for a marathon and not a race. And he'll have plenty of UK and European press from the Queen shows. Who knows how this will end up in the long run. Gonna be fun to watch! It's a pretty good number for no hit lead single. For pop. Let's go! hellothere, it's great that you don't care. But there are people that do. Ask North Carolina.

#1? Oh, heck yes! I'm loving that. Such an outstanding album deserves that spot. Also, I just saw the NCOE teaser, and I'm quite excited for the full video. I hope it's better than BTIKM.

I just hope his singles do well enough to keep the album afloat.

ADAM LAMBERT’S ‘TRESPASSING’ DEBUTS AT #1 ON THE US BILLBOARD TOP 200Sony Music Entertainment- Press Release (New York – NY) – Global superstar +Adam Lambert’s sophomore album, TRESPASSING, debuts at #1 on the +Billboard Top 200 chart and #1 on the Billboard Digital Albums Chart in the US. This marks Lambert’s first #1 debut. His first album debuted in the #3 position in 2009. Additionally, TRESPASSING debuts at #1 on the SoundScan Chart and Digital Albums Chart in Canada. bit.ly/KTQGUUAdam Lambert debuts at No. 1Take that, doubters: Adam Lambert's Trespassing blew past the competition to debut at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 this week. The singer's second album sold 77,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, putting him 14,000 ahead of Adele's 21 for the week and 23,000 ahead of the No. 3 album, Carrie Underwood's Blown Away. That puts Adam in the top tier of Idols like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken and Scotty McCreery, who have also topped the Billboard chart. Trespassing also topped the Billboard Digital Albums Chart and Canada's Digital Albums Chart. Adam's debut, For Your Entertainment, debuted at No. 3 in November 2009, selling 198,000 copies. Besides Adam and Carrie, three other Idol acts made The Billboard 200 this week: Kelly Clarkson (No. 52), Scotty McCreery (No. 97) and Daughtry (No. 171). content.usatoday.com/communities/idolchatter/post/2012/05/adam-lambert-debuts-at-no-1/1#.T7z76cWwWVoAdam Lambert Snags First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 ChartFor the first time, one "American Idol" replaces another at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart as Adam Lambert's "Trespassing" debuts atop the list with 77,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. I understand that Lambert's fans always like to use "being gay" as the reasoning behind everything that does or does not happen. Undoubtedly, the headlines will be along the lines of declaring sainthood. "First Openly Gay Artist to Hit #1, OMG, OMG, OMG", as if most people really give a damn. Your understanding is incorrect. And LGBT people may not be "most people" to you, but they are people. Just like the Obama headlines of being the first black president, people are interested in their achievements or society's actions. The Village Voice did an analysis of all gay singers and Billboard 200 #1, and determined that Lambert was the first openly gay artist to achieve that position or even to be signed to a major label in the US. The facts were confirmed by Billboard itself. Eton John and others were all in the closet when they hit. Furthermore, Elton never achieved a #1 spot after he finally came out. After that analysis was published, and Lambert hit #1... media outlets including LGBT like Queerty, Elton, etc covered the story. Billboad, RCA, even random people like Ann Burrell, a somewhat famous chef were covering it. While it may be insignificant to you, it's not insignificant to other people. And if you allege that there's no media or public bias towards him for his sexuality, you'd be wrong again. After doing an NPR interview Sunday this week, Newsbusters grabbed it and did a homophobic hit piece on HIM, which got reblogged all over the political sites. The very same week his album dropped. Ironically, it was NPR focusing on his sexuality, and Adam stated the most challenging part of his career is interviewers and other focusing on his sexuality over music. I'm sorry that you must think that even though, when put on a ballot, something like 33 states have a law prohibiting marriage equality ...these same citizens would be interested in any music by an openly gay man, that they have no former attachment to like an Elton John. If I'm not mistaken, his biggest single came when attached to a Lady Diana tribute. Do you contend that LGBT people aren't affected by bias in other parts of life besides this topic of radio? If LGBT people are affected by bias in life why would radio be different? It is NOT just fans who are interested in this point of view. And you cannot prove a negative but you can prove that djs all over the country have a history of making snarky gay comments when spinning his music. EVEN CURRENT REVIEWS IN PART DID THE SAME THING. Just a couple of months ago, GQ magazine made homophobic remarks about him and were forced to apologize by GLAAD. I'll stipulate this is changing now sometimes. And tweetstalking notes that several radio stations re tweeted the Village Voice and other announcements of his ACHIEVEMENT. While I've enjoyed reading your last 30 posts here focusing strictly on American Idol contestants, I would appreciate not mocking people who are interested in his life..like RCA.. and press...like Billboard, and avoid the topic of Adam's sexuality and the industry unless you really have researched it enough, as, say, the industry has.

Adam gets a nice mention by the Human Rights CampaignAdam Lambert Makes Music History Adam Lambert made history today as the first openly gay artist to have the No. 1 album in the country. Trepassing, Lambert’s second album, debuted today at No. 1 on the Billboard Album Chart with 77,000 albums sold, reported Billboard. Though other gay musicians like Elton John and George Michael have had No. 1 albums, none managed to top the charts after coming out. Lambert rose to stardom as a finalist on the television show "American Idol." He is the seventh "Idol" finalist to reach No. 1 on the charts. www.hrc.org/blog/entry/adam-lambert-makes-music-history/A Cultural Milestone? Is this a big deal?So to the point: for gay people to fully take part in the whole range of human activity, we must be able to do so while out of the closet, and with no hindrance whatsoever because we are out. So, let me get back to the title of this diary. Today, Billboard magazine will do what it does every Wednesday. It will publish its Billboard 200 album chart. And as often happens someone who has never topped its chart will be there. But there is something different this time. In the context of this post, in the context of expanding the range of human activity and achievement that out gay people can fully take part, there is history being made. Today for the first time in US music history, an out LGBT artist will top Billboard's album chart. That artist is Adam Lambert, the album is Trespassing, and, may I add, an outstanding pop album that may be one of the best pop albums in the last ten years or so. While some may want to diminish this moment by noting that LGBT artist have most certainly topped the Billboard album chart before, it is also true that none have been publicly LGBT while sitting atop Billboard's perch. It was, until now, an unspoken rule that to occupy this spot, gay artists had to hide their sexual orientation, even outright deceive the public about it if necessary. This, therefore, is most definitely a unique moment in US music history. Others may want to diminish the moment by pointing out that this was a slow week in sales, but no out artist has ever topped the charts even on slow sales weeks. This is a cultural milestone to be sure. Is it a big deal? To me, and the life I lived, and the life I know gay kids are living at this moment, to the dreams those gay kids have, to be able to see this moment in our cultural history, that they can exercise the full range of human activity while being just as public about their sexual orientation as straight people are, this milestone gives them hope. Congratulations to Adam Lambert. www.dailykos.com/story/2012/05/23/1093998/-A-Cultural-Milestone-Is-this-a-big-deal-Adam Lambert: First Out Gay Artist to Debut #1 on Billboard Album ChartBy Out.com Editors The pop star makes music history Adam Lambert's album Trespassing debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart today and #1 on the Billboard Digital Albums Chart. It's Lambert's first #1 debut. And the first time an openly gay artist has reached this achievement. We had inkling it was gonna be huge and included "Cuckoo" from the album in our 25 Songs of Summer. As we wrote: "A bass-heavy electro banger from the American Idol’s sophomore effort -- with its 'gonna party till they take us away' chorus -- promises to be exactly what shirtless guys who pump their fists in the air will sound like this summer." Yes, we congratulate Lambert, who was an Out100 honoree last year, on the historic accomplishment. And we think you'll be hearing a LOT of these songs at your favorite watering hole this year. Actually I don't think so because US alone he has BB200 #1, Digital Albums #1, Internet Albums #1 and Top Current Albums #1.
Sony Music Canada tweeted that he had #1 Albums and #1 Digital Albums there.

MusicFix Interview: Adam Lambert 'in shock' at being the first openly gay artist to hit number one in US "I'm so excited, you have no idea. I'm kind of in shock," he told TheFIX in a phone interview." "One of the great things about the album going number one this week is that it proves a point that music doesn't have an orientation, music is universal. And even though at times it does matter in the industry — marketing and all that — I would love to get to a point where it doesn't matter. I think this milestone kind of says that.""I just hope to inspire people to do whatever the hell they want to do. My biggest goal with my music is to try to liberate people, to get people to feel like they don't have to be one thing or another thing, and they're allowed to be and do what they want, with who they want," he said. The album is #4 in New Zealand.
These are the positions I've come across so far. 2012/06/02 Billboard Chart Date #1 BB200 77,052 #1 BB Digital Albums 29,000 #1 Top Current Albums #1 Top Internet Albums #16 Tastemakers
#1 Canadian Album Chart 7300 #1 Canadian Digital Album Chart
#1 Hungary Top 40 Albums #2 Finland #4 New Zealand #10 Denmark #10 Australia #20 Sweden
Global Chart #5 92,000
I thought I saw a twitter photo of a chart from Chile that showed him at #1 but haven't seen anything else and since I don't read the language I couldn't actually tell what the chart was. Anyone have any other figures that don't show up here?

IMO, that GLOBAL TRACK CHART site is useless because they can't compile sales from every country. Plus, Adam's album has not been released in some countries such as UK and Japan yet.

This counts what albums sell in a week so I don't get why the last sentence is relevant. Even if a cd is released in one country, but sells enough to make the top 50 they will still record it even if it hasn't been released everywhere yet. The site has been pretty consistently on the mark with its estimates so it is pretty useful as a guide if not a concrete to the unit count.
