Ashanti To Sing National Anthem At Pacquiao VS. Bradley Fight

Grammy Award-winning songstress and songwriter Ashanti will be singing the National Anthem at the rematch between Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao and the undefeated two-time division world champion Timothy Bradley Jr. Pacquiao admitted to always being a fan of Ashanti and happened to sit next to the "Braveheart" singer court side at a Knick's game. Pacquiao asked Ashanti if she would like to sing the National Anthem at his fight and she agreed leaving the boxer ecstatic.

"The Knicks may have lost that night, but I felt like the biggest winner in the world when I walked out of Madison Square Garden," says Pacquiao.

Ashanti being a fan of boxing found time in her busy schedule with the recent release of her new album, Braveheart. "I told Manny I was a big fan and was so excited when he asked me to sing the National Anthem at his upcoming fight and I can't wait," says Ashanti. I actually love boxing! Manny's such a champion and I can't wait to cheer him on!"

Both Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KOs) and Bradley (31-0, 12 KOs) will be fighting for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title. The two first fought against one another in 2012 with Bradley coming out with a win, ending Pacquiao's welterweight title reign as well as his seven-year, 15-bout winning streak, making this fight Pacquiao's first fight in the U.S. since 2012.

Pacquiao vs. Bradley happens Sat., April 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. The championship event will be distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9PM ET / 6PM PT.

With today's release of Braveheart, Ashanti fans can finally stop holding their breath for the R&B songbird's fifth album. While pushing a release date back from late 2011 to early 2014 might indicate apprehension, the singer claims she's "super, over-the-top excited" about the LP, which comes six years after her last album, The Declaration.

"I love the body of work," she told the Breakfast Club radio show. "It's scary when you put your all into something and you're not really satisfied. [But] when you're confident about the music, that's all that matters. You could ride like, 'I'm proud of this, whichever way it goes.' The reaction to the album has been phenomenal, so I'm excited."

With over a decade in the biz now, Ashanti also revealed how she's become a better vocalist over her 13-year career. "In the beginning, a lot of times I'd go, 'No, I don't sound like that! That ain't really how it sounds!'" she said. "I learned a lot about in-ear [monitors], that you can't be moving around and have things sound good. Becoming more confident and perfecting your craft over time, that's what does it.... We didn't have Auto-Tune when I was making my records. I definitely have grown a whole lot."

While Braveheart has yet to produce a smash hit, we're sure fans were curious to find out who Ashanti's "Never Should Have" (below) single is about. With heartbreaking lyrics like, "From that moment, couldn't imagine / You ever hurting me or mistreating my love," many thought it was signaling the end of her on-again, off-again relationship with rapper Nelly.

"'Never Should Have' is a record that talks about me and him [when we] were going back and forth," she explained. "It's weird because when I wrote the song, it was talking about things that happened between us. When I was singing the record, me and him were actually Skype-ing. We were cool and talking about it. It's kind of weird how things came together…he loves that record, to be honest."

As part of the format, Ashanti took questions from the host as well as fans about her new album, life, and other business ventures. She wrapped up the evening with a performance, touching on many of her hits including “Foolish”, “Happy” and “Rock Wit U” as well as music from her new album like “Nowhere”, “She Can’t” and “I Got It”. What made the evening extra special was that fans who had packed the store were singing right along to the new songs even though the album had just released. Ashanti‘s fifth album “Braveheart” is in stores now.

Even if Ashanti only sells 20K she's getting more of a percentage of those sales than most artist. She even said last night, because she's written the songs, produced, is the CEO of her own label, she gets around $7 for every album sold while most artist who don't do the latter get around 40 cents per album sold. She's winning.

Also, Ashanti has every award a recording artist can get (grammy, billboards (8 in one night), amas, mobos, vmas, etc.) has sold over 29 million cds worldwide, two world records and gets monthly royalty checks from the hits she wrote her herself and others. If she never put out another cd in life, she'd be fine. This era was more of a challenge to herself which is why it took so long to release. The fact that it's out is the accomplishment. Now, should she chose to sign to a major label, she'll be smarter as an artist for it because she's handled it ALL herself.

I don't get the hate for this chick, especially when people stan for artist with no personality or lasting music or varied subject matter.

Success of an album isn't always determined by sales. In this case, I think it's by reception and the reception has been solid. I don't think anyone was expecting her to sell 100K on an indie on her own record label. Plus, there has been a lack of promo/build up.

However, I agree. She's been in the game 13 years officially and if she wants to get back on top, she needs new management (sorry momanger), vocal lessons (I think she has a solid voice, just unpolished) and a new choreographer (Brice Vick is horrible).

I'll leave Ciara out of this (love her) but it is VERY understandable why Ashanti has backlash imo.

People want to see Ashanti losing because she already won more than she should have based on her (lack of) talent. Any R&B fan will probably list the early 00's as the single worst period, quality-wise, in R&B history. Hell, were it not for Alicia's debut, Usher's two huge eras, and Beyonce's solo breakthrough, there's nothing redeeming from that time period to even look back on. Ashanti is the poster child of this ringtone era. To make matters worse, her rise immediately followed the decline of much better vocalists Brandy and Monica, as well as Aaliyah, who while not up to vocal par with other 90's greats (yet still capable of hitting more notes than Ashanti), she compensated with innovation. Those ladies offer quite a contrast to someone who can be summed up with one-note & off pitch singing, 3rd grade lyrics, formulaic production, and samey samey hook ho features.

To earn respect as an artist, you either need to A) have strong vocal chops (Brandy, Monica, Alicia, early solo Beyonce) or B) come with something fresh and innovative (Aaliyah, Ciara, more recent solo Beyonce). Ashanti (along with fellow early 00's nightmare J. Lo) is about as weak as it gets vocally and about as generic as it gets stylistically. But she had all of this massive, in-your-face success. It WAS frustrating at the time. WHY would anyone root for sort of thing to return??

See I was a fan of hers in 2002 and I still am. I always thought people were just thrown off guard that this thin voiced bitch was hitting it big only because until Beyonce there wasn't a diva with a big voice around. Mariah was down for the count, Whitney was out, DC had broken up and like you said, Brandy and Monica had left the scene. But I mean, where is the vitriol for Mya, Amerie, Rihanna, Cassie or Ciara? There is virtually none even though Ashanti is a stronger vocalist than all of them imo. I think she got it the worst because she was the first, like oldest child syndrome.

I get that people were taken off guard that someone who didn't have a traditionally "strong" voice got so much runaway success but it just comes off as so petty that people are still holding on to her being overexposed at that time 10 years later. I think people gave her way too hard of a time for not being a great live performer because her music was much stronger than people gave her credit for imo. Her first album is amazing (Baby, Rescue, Foolish, Happy, Leaving, Movies, Scared, etc), Chapter II had great singles and then Concrete Rose was a pretty solid album too minus some fluff.

Idk I think the hate for her was always way too extreme when there have always been singers with less than awesome live voices. People (not just on this board but just in general) really act like she did bullied them back in high school or something with the way they celebrate her downfall while still jamming out to Rihanna and Britney Spears.

I'm liking the album a lot more now. If they ever pushed a single at Pop, "Don't Tell Me No" would've been a good choice. So catchy.
